Specs are Win95 but I can't get "Byzantine" to open on either a laptop Win98 or desktop Win XP.

At game start I receive a message "No Direct Draw Hardware."  Game website (Discovery Channel) FAQ has the following information:

Quote

Q:  What do I do to solve the error "No Direct Draw Hardware"?

A:  The video driver that you are using is not certified to use DirectX 5.0. The vendor of your PC or the vendor of your video card will be able to help you find the correct driver that is certified to run DirectX 5.0

Endquote

Neither the PC vendor (Dell) nor the Microsoft website offer any information at all to help resolve the problem which seems to be that DirectX 5.0 no longer has the appropriate certification.  Current verion of DirectX (9.x) is supposed to be backward compatible, but that appartently doesn't include certifications.  The problem remains.

Do I need to find old drivers and install them?  Where can old drivers be found, I also wonder.

I'd be grateful for tips on how to deal with this.

Also, I have run across a very few games that require a specific version of DirectX.  Although DirectX 9 cannot be uninstalled  >
it does absolutely no harm to install an older version "on top" of it.  Just make sure that after you are done with the game, you run the DirectX 9 installation again.  It is usually games demanding DirectX 3 that cause me this problem.)

Finally, it appears to me from the info you found that your problem may be related to the specific drivers you are using for your specific graphics card/chipset.  If none of the above work (and definitely try them first), can you let us know what graphics card/chipset you are using so we can help locate a dirver appropriate for the game?

Many, many thanks for your reply.  I followed the Setup instructions you provided, installed the game, and am pleased to report it works perfectly.

I am looking forward to getting into the game; my wife and I spent a couple of weeks in Istanbul in 1988 and were mildly surprised at what a great place it is to visit.   So the game should be all that more pleasurable in allowing me to have a "return visit."

This occasion was my first experience with the Just Adventure forum, and needless to say, it has been a very satisfactory one.

This is an outstanding website.  I'd like to thank all those who have been involved in making it a success.

Thanks again,

Dave
