Objective: Listen to the clips and try to figure out the song and artist.

Rules

1. There are two answers per clip; Song and Artist. You get one guess for each.
2. Each clip is worth 10 points, 5 for the song title and 5 for the artist. You do not need to answer both if you only know one of the two.
3. For a movie/television theme, I simply want the artist and the name of the film or TV series. You do not have to supply the song name.
4. Answers must be sent by PM. You can send as many PMs as you wish according to the above rules.

Notes

1. The genres below are just basic guidelines and refer to the artist's general type of music rather than the actual song itself.
2. I do not own recordings of most of the songs and hence cannot verify the veracity of my playing. They are either figured out off the top of my head from how I remember them, or learned from online resources that are usually without proper notation and often written by tone-deaf monkeys. This means that the notes may not be 100% accurate and tempo and timing may be slightly off. This shouldn't be too huge of a problem, but I give the disclaimer nonetheless.
3. I may screw with your head by playing classical pieces in a heavy metal guitar solo style or playing a distorted rock song on a classical guitar. It is part of the challenge. Don't expect carbon copies of the songs.

though I didn't participate last week, I might this week, since I might get some help from my brother.
I'm rather surprised no one guessed no. 9...but I just like this musical piece I guess.

So is #6 an overdub? Or did you have somebody else playing with you?

#18 is going to haunt me until I can recall what it is.

Yes, you all know number 9.
I shouldn't act too smug, though. There are a lot of rock tunes here even a rock-ignorant person like me has heard before.....but I have no idea what their names are or who performed them!

18 is more of a guitar-oriented band. It is somewhat obscure, but pivotal in that respect.

As for #6, it is actually 3 guitars overdubbed. I just figured out how to get multi-track recording working this week and used it on both of the above clips. #18 is two guitars in harmony.

Now if I could only figure out how to get rid of the pops and clicks (which are not the result of clipping) and a guitar sound I actually like, I might be happy. I don't play guitar much now  due to RSI, but I like it so much that it is worth a little pain now and then.

Audio restoration and enhancement is a hobby of mine. Pristine Sounds Pro is by far the best app I've worked with. Of course, this only helps after you've recorded the errors.

What software and recording process do you use? It's been my experience that most "clicks" unrelated to clipping are the result of missing samples, which would be caused by low memory or a slow processor.

I know what #16 is now, but I don't know the name of that song.

Same with #9. I always have trouble with the classical ones.

I am using Cakewalk 6 which came out before Windows 98. It is a bit out of date, but it is the only thing I have at the moment. My computer is a P4 2.8GHz with 1 GB of Ram and several 15k RPM SCSI drives. I don't think speed is an issue, unless I am too fast for the ancient software I am using. LOL!

I don't recognize #17 at all.

12 and 18 are the ones that keep me awake at night. I know I've heard them before.

When I play them as one file #8 is less than a second long. That's not normal, is it?
I can't imagine that three people guess a song just by one tone.

It still remains. I can't get the name from #16 and the others are still a mystery. I believe I heard a lot of them, but that could be my memory playing tricks (rather than my memory failing).

Yes. That's normal, but the three notes are enough to make the tune recognizable.

edit: or is it four notes? I'm no musician.

What do you define as Metal? A band like Metallica is definitely Metal, but would you include the bands that are labled "Hair Metal" like Dokken, Motley Crue Cinderella...

How funny is that?  I was looking for an mp3 to download of Sharp-dressed Man earlier today thinking it may fit #2.  No luck... and I got side-tracked reading some 80's top 40 lists and forgot I was looking for a ZZ Top mp3....

and with #17, I thought..."Hmmm, Ozzy?  Randy Rhodes?" I dug through my cassettes...cast Diary of a Madman aside as I went for Blizzard of Oz...nope. That wasn't Dee.  Ok, You Can't Kill Rock n Roll had some acoustics before it rocked out - I don't remember it sounding like that, but maybe my memory is off...back to the Diary of a Madman cassette.  Nope.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...............seems I only ever listened to side 1 of Diary of a Madman and never went to side 2.  C'mon, with Over the Mountain, Flying High Again, and You Can't Kill Rock and Roll - did I really need to go to side 2???

Great contest again Bastich!!!!

I thought #18 sounded like Yngwie Malmsteen, but when you said it was a band, I figured I was wrong.
