And after that metaphor, we shall never look at arts and crafts the same way again.

There are plenty of sects that forbid magazines and newspapers, television, radio etc and they raise their kids in their own schools and insist the girls get married at 18 to boys from their own sect and everyone must leave school at 16 and is forbidden from using computers. The women aren't allowed to cut their hair, wear scarves when in public, must not associate with non sect members. The sect is totally self-reliant and self funding and they don't borrow funds from banks to buy houses and the whole church renovates/repairs each other's homes. Sounds wierd?
Dead right it's wierd. They have a meeting hall around the corner from me. The Breathren. They own a very prosperous car dealership not far from here which funds their sect. Very closed non evangelical sect. However, the women all have a small tribe of kids behind them, so they've obviously figured that bit out.
My friend lives next door to one and when they were persuaded to allow their daughter to complete year 12 at school, the rest of the church punished them by removing their other two daughters into homes where they would not be contaminated by their elder sister's company. And the sect is so strong that the parents agreed to this punishment. They also arrange marriages for their girls outside their own community which of course only increases the girls' dependence on their husband. This wife was imported from New Zealand and is delighted her sister has been sent over to find a husband - at last she won't be alone. Kinda hard to leave a sect when you have no outside contact or support.
So, yes, some cults do exercise such immense control over their followers.

Anne,
Europeans do it differently. I've seen houses in Austria with little platforms above their chimneys to allow the storks to nest without blocking the air flow.
