I absolutely LOVED Broken Sword 3...loved, loved, LOVED it. EVERYTHING about it! Loved the interface, loved the keyboard controls, loved the story, the voice work, the graphics, loved it ALL!!! I only wish it had been another 20 hours LONGER!!!
Now...on Dreamfall. I have NO idea if I will like this game, BUT....I loved TLJ, and loved BS3....so....I imagine I will probably fall in love with Dreamfall too.
I have NO desire to pre-judge any games that are not released, or that I, personally have not played. Everyone has different taste in gaming. I, for one, enjoy pretty much ALL genres of games. Reviewers do not always have the same likes/dislikes with their games that I do, so....I read reviews AND previews with that in mind.
I cannot POSSIBLY know if I like a game without playing it!! Kind of like as a child our mother says to us, "How do you KNOW you don't like shrimp? You've never TRIED it!" My parents made me TRY everything.....foods, amusement park rides, different types of music. As a matter of fact, my father made us listen to different styles of music EVERY night. He called it "vegetable music," and it consisted of anything that wasn't our FAVORITE....we couldn't listen to rock and roll at bedtime.  o you know what this did for me as an adult? It made me open-minded. It gave me a willingness to try things before judging them. Personally, I think it made my sister and I more intelligent, more inquisitive, more sensitive to others who are different that us....I think it actually made us better PEOPLE all around.
And you know what....I TRIED the shrimp (even though I didn't like how it LOOKED at FIRST) and guess what?? I LIKED IT!!
To sum up MY opinion on anything new we might be presented as GAMERS (not strictly adventure gamers....I want a balanced diet of games, not just meat and potatoes)....
BRING IT ON, Dreamfall!!! Let us judge AFTER we TASTE/HEAR/PLAY/EXPERIENCE it!!

Status : Online | To all those adventure gamers who say: (and there is a lot of you!)
I will worry about it/think about it/make a decision about it
when I can
play it/see a review of it/play a playable demo of it.
I say: Get involved more! Send letters to the Editor as it were, argue in Forums like this. Send emails to the publisher, use the "contact us" every chance you get! It doesn't mean you'll get a game that's exactly what you want, but it means in general, adventure games will get better!
Of all the genres, adventure gamers are the most placid. You see HUGE arguments about what should be in Half Life 2 or Doom 3, for example. "We need to be able to drive tanks!", "if there is no modding capability i'm gonna go crazy!". They totally totally think they should be heard on game design, story, etc. AND THEIR RIGHT!
In the adventure game market though: " Well, the publisher knows best" and "what can I do?". Is it any wonder we have a genre dying on it's feet?! Is it any wonder we get the crappy adventures we do!
Look at TLJ. Go back and look at the previews and reviews from when the game first came out. Those editorials are about surprise! Surprise that a game of the quality of TLJ would be released! Shocked would be a good word. That's why TLJ got so many 100%'s.
We should be demanding that level of quality all the time! Everytime we hear of a crappy adventure game, see crappy graphics, find out the "adventure" is only going to work with gamepads, or that the publisher is thinking of adding arcade sequences or something; or we see something we really like, have an idea we think would make an adventure better, we should contact the designer/publisher - everytime!
We should put more pressure on websites like this one to be much more aggressive in they're interviews with these publishers and give us true facts and quote designer/publishers verbatim. No editing. We should write letters to game magazines demanding better coverage. A games magazine with a circulation of 150,000 gets about 50 letters a month. Imagine if it started getting another 50 letters a month just from adventure gamers? It would be enough for them to change their editorial, mark my words! I have written to the gaming magazine I subscribe to, asking why there has been no Dreamfall coverage and that they should reconsider there 2001 65% review of The Longest Journey, given they now mention it with reverent tones when they talk about it (infrequently).
We have the genre we deserve. We need to fight harder rather than give up. We are giving up.

He said there was only one fighting sequence that you absolutely had to do to complete the game -- a boxing match in a gym, near the beginning of the game. It's a tutorial in how the combat function works, basically. He swore that in every other circumstance where fighting/action was an option, there was another way for you to solve the dilemma and proceed. Action or puzzling, totally up to the player's preference.
This was a big relief, and now I'm terribly excited about this game! It looked beautiful in the preview.

Nothing is wrong with the action/adventure genre. It's just a separate genre from the "just adventures." I want BOTH....I'm very GREEDY when it comes to games! I say....KEEP MAKING the action/adventure, adventures, shooters, rpgs, MMORPGs, strategies, puzzle games....EVERYTHING!!! I want it ALLLLLLLLL!!
Presently playing Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft obsessively....as well as any other good games that appear on the horizon. I love all genres!

I couldn't agree more KCgg.
Variety is what it's all about, which is why I play PC games from every major genre in almost every style, as well as hybrids that combine various aspects of two or more main categories.
Some of my favorites over the past 7 years or so have been System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Outcast, Omikron and Anachronox as well as more specialized titles like Thief: The Dark Project.
As Garrett in Thief, it felt like you were playing a role as much as in any RPG. But it also had a solid story with loads of atmosphere, required creative thinking in a wide array of situations, introduced truly immersive real-time stealth components, advanced the in-game use of directional surround sound to a whole new level, had numerous scary moments and managed to convey a feeling of living out an adventure as much as any pure AG to date.
Now THAT was an innovative, exciting new gaming experience that provided plenty of challenges to even the smartest players and to this day is hard to beat for total immersion in a unique game world.
But the fact that hybrids like Omikron, etc. and innovative, oddball titles like Thief are also in real-time 3D and require equal parts physical skills and clever, cautious thinking make them undesirable for many AG purists.
Well, that's fine for them but it is their loss not mine. I too want it all and am willing to try all sorts of fresh, new appoaches to interactive storytelling and adventuresome new styles of gameplay. It doesn't matter to me in the least if they are in 2D, 2D + 3D, full 3D, first or third person, real-time or turn-based, with or without direct player-controlled action, online or off, using a mouse, keyboard, mouse + keyboard combo, gamepad or joystick. Just as long as it all works in the context of that particular game and it fosters innovative ideas.
That being said, I still adore pure P&C puzzle adventures as much as ever. But now we also have games of every other type and I want to play them all.
Cheers, Terry

Everything you say is EXACTLY how I feel! Wanna get married?? LMAO
No, seriously....I just love GAMING. The more unique and innovative, the better. I've always loved to read, ever since I was old enough to be able to read. To me...games are just an interactive book! Whether they are an action book, an adventure book....WHATEVER....it is another way to tell a story. And even though straight puzzle games like Bookworm, don't tell a STORY, they exercise my MIND.
To me....one of the worst things I can imagine is to have a stagnant MIND. I like new ideas of all kinds....that makes life and gaming even...interesting to me.
Thanks, Terry! I feel I have a gaming soulmate out there! =D
