that's a poll i made in underdogs about 2 years ago! i wanted to make it here the day i registered but there was no such option... well, now there is!

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

Without a doubt, the Gabriel Knight series. Not only the best of Sierra, but also one of the best adventures series of all time.

My second favorite would be the Laura Bow series, which I think is very underated.

The other series I don't like that much, with the exception of the Larry Series, which I find really funny.

Quest for Glory is also very good, even if not pure adventure. But GK is better...

I kind of have a problem with the LSL series. Its progenitor, Softporn Adventure, is hands down the worst IF I've ever played. And somehow, they took the puzzles and setting, and turned it into an absolutely brilliant game: LSL1. The original LSL was pure genius. But the sequels quickly degenerated into a pile of "Let's laugh at Larry because he's so pathetic! Ha ha!" jokes.

Anyway, I voted for GK, but only for the merits of the original. I find the sequel greatly overrated. The FMVs, which the game relies completely on, look terrible! Wing Commander 4 came out the same year, and had MPEG-2 quality FMVs. Why not GK2? And I haven't played GK3 yet.

Damn. Now that I think about it, I should have voted for QfG. The sum of its parts isn't the greatest of all the series, but it's the only Sierra adventure series where each sequel really builds upon the previous game.

Quest for Glory? Laura Bow? Gabriel Knight? Argh, I don't think I can choose between them!

GK- awesome story, and it even works as a book

LB- amazing mystery, keeps you guessing till the end

QG- Hilarious and great replayability

I'm going with QfG, though. It's the one that makes me happiest.

Perhaps because there are LOT more FMV in GK2, it had to be compressed to a much greater degree?
MPEG-2 is the same as for DVD/sat-broadcast, isn't it? Wing commander IV was better, but in no way as good as that. I have the game and will check it out later.

And calling the GK2 FMVs terrible is a bit of a stretch, don't you think? If you play it, like any true die hard "oldies" fan should, on a 15" monitor, it looks quite ok imo. On a modern 19" it's not very good because of the visible pixellation.

Deleted UserWell my first PC came with a ten times more expensive then now 17' screen... can you imagine how disappointed I was with most VGA games that came in 320*240 or even 640x480 The only adventure of that time that had a higher resulution (800x600) was Star Trek - A final Unity and I was always thinking "why the f*ck don't have all games such fine graphics?"

About the vote... I also had some troubles deciding which series to choose. I do love GK1 and had a love hate relationship with GK2 for some reasons: The German in the English version was horrible it sounded very funny and that didn't fit a serious situation, my non US version was censored and somehow I didn't like Grace (maybe the actress?). Then there is QfG especially the first two I enjoyed so much, the atmosphere was just fantastic, the same does count for Laura Bow even though I died a million deaths like maybe only in SQ and Manhunter before it was just something different with an unbeatable atmosphere. Else I enjoyed almost all series except Police Quest. My english wasn't that good at that time and all the police "abbreviations" drove me nuts.
Sometimes I regret that I sold all my Kings Quest and Space Quest copies and only kept the others like Larry, Laura, Manhunt, Codename Iceman, Torin's Passage and so on. But at least I gut the KQ collection a few years ago to have them back so only SQ is still missing and I only have the 6th one which was on a magazine some time back. Hmm guess the only Sierra games I never played were Goldrush and "Magic(?) Cauldron", I never saw them anywere around here back then.

in general, i think gk2 is one of the most overrated adventures in history... yes it was a very good adventure indeed, but nothing like the hype built around it... unfortunately, what this poll proves (like it did on the underdogs 2 years ago) is that the mainstream is what the majority knows and it will always come first :
(and i repeat, gk2 was a very good adventure (and gk1 was even better!))

as for me, laura bow all the way!

i modified the poll and included an "all of them" option... if that's where you stand and you already voted you can remove your vote and vote again

I have only played Dagger of Amon Ra. What are the other ones and can a person still find them?

The first Laura bow; there are two: this and the dagger os amon Ra. The first is from Roberta Williams, and is text based, like Knig's Quest IV; it may be in the home of the underdogs

Though I like most Sierra adventure games I played, there's just nothing like Gabriel Knight, so I voted for that series.

@Jalex:

The first Laura Bow adventure game is called The Colonel's Bequest. Haven't played it too much myself, but others here totally love that game. You can still find it occasionally on ebay, but don't expect to get it at a cheap price. It is also included in The Roberta Williams Anthology. But again, that one is going for high prices on ebay all the time.

Also, there is a teenie weenie chance that AGDI will someday remake The Colonel's Bequest in VGA, just like they did with the KQ games.

Don't hold your breath, though.:

Geez, I REALLY love GABRIEL KNIGHT, but I have also had so much fun with many of SIERRA's games so I had to go with ALL OF THEM.

WC4 had a gigantic budget for a computer game.  They even created all the sets instead of using bluescreens and got a number of top flight actors (by video game standards).
