It depends on who you listen to. And you'll find that you are not alone with your opinions of this game - although you will also find staunch supporters of Syberia. In fact the last Syberia discussion ended on the brink of a major flamewar.
But what do you think of the obviously asinine characters that Kate deals with? That they're not so unusual in an adventure game
1. We have her sidekick Oscar. The obtuse bureaucratic tin man who who cannot so much as lift a finger as to help you much along the way other than lend his one- track-only-train driving services. Yes, Kate's tin buddy Oscar is definitely taking things too far. It is difficult to tell whether he's trying to help Kate or prevent her from getting wherever she's supposed to go.
3. The Insane Soldier Border Guard (or whatever). Who believes that a several-years-static-stationary-blurry enemy soldier is a threat to security. Not very likely, no. Perhaps Syberia is not for the gullibility-challenged
4. The Inaftuated Insane Man. Who cannot live life fully without meeting his opera sweetheart. Actually this one was okay. He was clearly out of his mind so irrational behaviour was perfectly acceptable in his case. This one bothered me the the least.
I know this is 'just a game' but can we readily accept it like that when the portraits of characters are drawn so as to not have any intrinsic fundamental intelligence? Were the inhabitants of this game (other than Kate) infected with the dummy virus? It seemed that way. You forgot the drunken astronaut with suicidal streak (I don't think he could survive).
Take The Longest Journey. I believe that those characters had much more development. True enough. I guess you could think of it this way: The Longest Journey would probably make a fine book or movie. Syberia definitely wouldn't, unless some masochist enjoys watching a presumably intelligent girl endlessly running around and talking to imbeciles. But she does all that in a beautiful environment!
I forgot my sig.

Check out the other two "underground" reviews in this forum. And, if you're in the mood for some great laughs, check the Syberia thread in the main forum (courtesy of your humble servant ).

I agree with you 100%. For me though, if not for the eye candy I would never have finished this game.

The husband seems to speak a part French part German language and the wife sounds more Russian (peasant) than Borodine!

For those that haven't followed my support of this game (I apologize)...
I agree with some of the points, and yet I loved the game.

as for Syberia i've talked about the major pros (atmosphere, story[line!]) and cons (puzzles, difficulty [say what?]) before... the analyzing of the characters is smth new though... i mostly agree about "The Insane Soldier Border Guard", i think he was the most asinine of all (but aren't they all?! ) on the other hand "The Infatuated Insane Man" portrayed a stalker that could actually exist in real life... i liked him the most... as for oscar, well maybe that happened because he's an automaton, which you could compaire to a droid a guess... so having a computerized brain you don't listen to common sense, you HAVE TO do things the way you are programmed to do them... he was VERY frustrating though it's true
You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

The characters she meets along the way are fun because they're so different than most people in the real world (at least that I know).

Admit it! You are the one and only Britney! You have given up singing and are developing an AG set in the tragic world of pop music and boy bands, admit it!
Hmmm...

Subject: Syberia - Mouth-watering wrapping but tastes like an old shoe, September 21, 2003
***
I was wondering why did this game got so high reviews for eminent gaming magazines. Scores like 5 out of 5 and 90% aren't the whole truth. Syberia looks and sounds good but after finishing the game twice I can't help the feeling that it feels hollow. Why? Three major aspects made this game are less than satisfying. Because there are already enough of hailing reviews I won't focus on that but tell you what made me think of this game only worth of three stars.
1) The main quest in the game is to find a missing person in order to sign up the contract. You have pretty little information of whereabouts of the person, just a clue. Instead of rational problem solving methods in order to find the person, you are from head to toe in deep labyrinth of irrelevant tasks, acting against common sense. I felt that most of the problems were out of the focus but also too easy to solve. Sometimes you didn't even knew what you just solved or how solving this problem helps you to accomplish you main mission. So, things just happened following the logic of a dream - and like a dream, I had the feeling that I'm not in control of a things but they just happen and I'm standing and watching the show.
2) Dialogue was based on keywords which is good, but the keywords are exactly the same throughout the game. You will eventually end up hearing the same questions and same answers again and again. There's no information about what you have been asking or speaking about before and what are the new topics and discussion opportunities that have arisen from your previous discussions. Not to mention that you could not change your mood (ie. from gentle to hostile tone) in order to have different conversations. The keywords appear on notepad but none of the discussions are written down for later examination. Finally, the main character has a mobile phone and every time it rings she have to answer! It was really irritating. Can't I decide when to speak?
3) Like in every adventure game, you need to collect everything. Sometimes this made me wonder - why? For example: You arrive to the library filled with thousands of books. The only two books you need to solve the problem are simply on your route - you don't even need to look for them. I began to wonder, why just these books are important. From the problem solving view it's complitely opposite - you have tools and then you need to figure out where to use them. Problems can be solved only one way - no alternative solutions.
+) The game has a lots of oddities, some of the hilarious but most of them frustrating dropping the tempo of the adventure and breaking the mood effectively. For example the main character kept saying "No need to go down there". Like she knows where to go but doesn't bother to tell it to the player.
The game had it's good moments but the things mentioned above are inexcusable. They prevent Syberia for being a good and enjoyable adventure game. The end left so many open questions that I'm keen to play the sequel as well I'm wishing that the developers have learned something from the mistakes they made with this first one. If you are looking for better but similiar adventure game try "The Longest Journey", "Grim Fandango" and "Blade Runner". For older games an absolute gem is "Indiana Jones and The Fate of The Atlantis".

And, for the 'silly' characters... boy oh boy why can't I have a real Oscar (the plot, the plot! "See you later, alligator!" "In a while, Kate Walker."). The idea of Kate being annoyed with Oscar but keeps liking him more and more until he becomes a friend - I shared that with her. The others were just like ordenary people: strange!
The puzzles, they were far too simple. But, they made you get on with the story
Overall I enjoyed the game intensly, but when I played it (again) with a friend the magic was gone... very strange. Perhaps you have to be in the right kind of mood, or the right kind of guy (or girl, or thing) to 'feel' the plot. So, yes the phone belonged there! Kate breaking up with her friend and not caring - splendid!
Now please loosen up thoose ropes, I can barely move!

I've finally played Syberia this weekend and I have to say I totally agree with your entire post. The phonecalls in eerie places, like a glimpse of - unwanted- reality in the progressively growing fantasy of the adventure, were perfect!
I expected it much easier and way shorter, thanks to all here . In fact, I thought it would end when leaving Barrockschtad and almost used a walkthrough for the Blue-Helena :
A little bit too much of the "walking in the scenery" thing and some idle i.e annoying conversations (ex: the rectors... i hate people repeating themselves) to my taste ; but defininitly an "A" game. It made me believe in the adventure and kept me intrigued til the last second.
