Status : Offline | I'm sure many of you know about the PocketScumm project, but if not, this is to let you know that it has matured to the point (due to a fellow named Arisme) that you can play many of the LucasArts 'Scumm' games that appear on many people's top-5 lists completely through with full sound on a PocketPC! And it's free! (Of course, you need to own the original games.)
These games include: Monkey Island 1 & 2, Zak McCracken, Loom, Sam and Max Hit the Road, Day of the Tentacle, and Indiana Jones-Fate of Atlantis. If you love them as much as I do, then it is worth the price of a pocketpc just to be able to play the games wherever you want. Here's the link for the forum where the project is discussed daily- you will find link information there to get the latest build of PocketScumm:
http://forums.pocketmatrix.com/viewforum.php?f=20
Be sure to check out SirDave's Mini-Manual thread near the top to help get you started .
Incidentally, if you don't know anything about PocketPCs and what they cost, they are at BestBuy and places like that at prices of $300-$650. On the other hand, some older models (that are perfectly good) are selling off cheaper: at CostCo, they're selling the Toshiba E310 for $249! If you do happen to come across a Casio Em500 or E125, SNATCH IT NOW!!! The latter are the best units for playing these games and they were selling off for $150-$250 some months back!

The future ain't what it used to be!

I have no idea what the project actually is, or anything about it, and this is the first time I've actually heard about it... but if it's got anything to do with Loom, it's wonderful

The size of the game files varies of course, but if you include the sound files they can be anywhere from 4mb to 40mb (total game size). Part of this depends on how the Mp3 files are encoded (eg. at 64 vs 128kbps). You pretty much have to put the games on memory/storage cards.
As an example, I use a Casio Em500 or Casio E125 for these games and on one 128mb memory card, I have the entire, Monkey Island 1, Loom, Indiana Jones-Fate of Atlantis, Sam and Max Hit the Road, and Zak McKracken (all with sound except Zak which never had any sound).
Generally, getting the game over to the PocketPc consists of transferring the main game files and a sound file, converted to a MP3, into a directory (named after the game) that is in the same directory as the PocketSCUMM.exe. Check out the link in my post above and read my 'SirDave's PocketScumm Mini-Manual' post which is near the top of the forum thread listings.
It's worth the effort- nothing knocks game-lovers' socks off more than seeing Sam and Max running on one of these things!
