Just finished Far Cry.  I agree with SJH, the ending was kind of lame.  I was expecting a little more than what they showed.  Of course, I seemed to have missed the whole point anyway.  I got blown off my sailboat, yadda-yadda...maybe I turned my head too long during the intro and missed something.

All in all, it was a blast.

In defense of COD, you do play a grunt, so being able to making sweeping decisions just isn't part of the routine.  Your sergeant barks the orders while standing over your shoulder and you carry them out.  "Chew gum, look dumb, and follow the man in front of you..."

i tried the demo as well. i didnt liked it at all. you kinda want to find out the storyline, but the gameplay was boring. maybe full game is different, but i wasnt convinced at all (what the purpose of demo if not to convince player?)
anyway i must say the game looks fantastic! water was wow, and so was jungles. its kinda cool that you can explore so much, and yet it is useless  :

i think doom3, or even cod was so much better.
you just wait for hl² now, then we will see what is the best game ever!

That's certainly not the case - Far Cry has objectives, the difference being you can do much more than your average shooter to get there. Playing on a hard level of difficulty puts the onus on quick strategic thinking too as the AI is the best out there (still!).

I'd say, barring whether or not HL2 might come out this year, Far Cry IS the best FPS I've played er... this year. Simply nothing else comes close yet. Still, it's a matter of taste - I found Far Cry (NOT the demo) to have far better AI, scary "jump" moments and the best level in an FPS so far. That includes D3 - which Lucian can tell you I enjoyed - although I can see it's rather obvious faults through lack of AI and straight shooting.

The best level came in the form of the fort Rebellion - moonlit fighting with giant mutants leaping up to 25ft into the air to vantage points as other AI humans fire at them, and others pound at the gates. I've seen nothing like it yet - that it's completely reliant on AI means its different every time, nothing is scripted.

COD, no matter how good, relies on you going through the motions - I love the original, for all its scripting it has fantastic moments. COD:UO is worse, however - a fifteen/twenty minute house defense near the beginning is exhaustive and just plain boring. Up UNTIL then it's pretty good, even if you're led by the hand - but the general idea of the expansion is to throw a ton of troops at you and nothing else.

The dramatic impact is thus drained. Far Cry relied on open areas full of AI controlled grunts with unpredictable behaviour. That it got boring towards the end was because the level design went down the pan - corridors and basic straight-shooting and some impossible situations spoilt the games flow.

I'm sorry SHJ, but I don't see how that AI was so impressive.  I found in several places that as soon as I could see them, they could see me.  This was most annoying in one level where I used the sniper rifle.  I watched one guard standing on a wall, and when I zoomed in, he quickly laid down in the prone position and started shooting at me from quite a distance.

I also found that when I was shot at, it would take me a bit to determine where it came from, but when I shot someone, it was like thier entire forces made a beeline for my position.

I found that my favorite tactic in the jungle would be to hide in a bush.  They wouldn't shoot me because they couldn't see me - when they got close, I would open up on them.

When blowing up the communication ship, I found it ironic how the helicopter would know exactly where I was at all times no matter how well I stayed hidden.

The AI didn't seem very good to me and I was playing on the medium setting.  You think they would have been relatively dumb and not so blessed with ESP.

I also wasn't too pleased with the spawning.  I would clear out an area, run into a building, then run out of it and have 3-4 guys suddenly right there shooting at me.

There was also the case of the disappearing objects.  Your boat would disappear, items would disappear, etc. this was especially true on the communications ship.  Right after you set off the explosives, your little boat is gone, as are the health packs and rockets on the bridge.  That was just a little too lame.

We all have differnt opinions, but if you think this is one of the best FPS games so far this year, can you please tell me what other FPS games you've played so I know what to avoid?

If he was looking at you, enemy AI responds to the flash of the scope.
It also depends on where you were and what cover you were in.

If you had directional audio and used EAX, you could probably do the same. I'm pretty good at pinpointing sounds in games - even better now with an Audigy and surround headphones!
However, if you don't like this I can't recommend Hidden and Dangerous 2 - sounds cause the AI to respond, muzzle flash on snow or desert even more so as it's easy to pinpoint.

You should always seek cover no matter what situation it is - never stand about out in the open. That's the way to do it!

This was an annoyance to me too. I hated that 'copter and did this part the hard way as I never found out how to lean over and shoot the raft away. Still had plenty of fun shooting it down eventually and tactically making my way across the deck. Eventually.

I played the entire thing on hard, so I don't know.  :-/

There is no actual spawn points in this game, just a defined amount unless it's one of the completely scripted indoor alarm sections. Enemies hear and respond to outside fire, so it's only natural if you've massacred their comrades others will rush out to hunt you down afterwards. They're often on patrol in the surrounding area and you missed them on the way in.

There was also the case of the disappearing objects.  Your boat would disappear, items would disappear, etc. this was especially true on the communications ship.  Right after you set off the explosives, your little boat is gone, as are the health packs and rockets on the bridge.  That was just a little too lame.

I don't remember this happening to me...  :-/ Guess I was lucky.

That's a little harsh a comment isn't it? Personally I think some of the problems you're experiencing aren't really problems, rather the way you're tackling things. I'll be the first to admit it isn't the best shooter I've played but it's certainly one of the top twenty.

I'd love to know which one's you've played, as I can't think of many that actually come close to Far Cry in terms of innovation. Plus there's the fact a good few people back me up here and it was reviewed well across the board... maybe I'm being hard on you, but despite the smiley I feel I've got to defend myself against that remark.
Hope you don't mind!

Other games I've played over the last year or so include Chaser (which is an underrated and very good game IMHO), Tron 2.0 (enjoyable on and off), Call of Duty (a serious classic, the expansion has its moments but is so-so), Hidden and Dangerous 2 (great but difficult), Doom 3 (average game made better by above average graphics and atmosphere)... er... I'm sure there's others but I can't recall them ATM. I'm partial to online shooters and rather enjoyed Battlefield Vietnam and Joint Operations but my clan didn't take well to them. Call of Duty's multiplayer is superb, I've been playing it for a year and it's the best part of United Offensive, and I really enjoy the odd bash at Planetside, although that can prove horrendously addictive.

Not at all and I didn't mean for my comment do be harsh, but more of a smarta$$ joke.

The bottom line is that you loved the game.  There are many games I love that other people didn't think were so great.

Deleted UserOkay, I bring back this old thread now, because FAR CRY is the BEST PC GAME EVER!
Well, definitly in the tops anyway
.
I finally bought it and I'm halfway though it Ì think. The graphics are absolutely stunning (and I've played HL2 and DOOM3), the gameplay is incredible, etc.

Now that HL2 and DOOM3 have came out, I can say that Far Cry has some highlights that are cruelly missing from those two games.
The huge levels, no loading screens every 100meters (well Doom3 was OK for that).
MUSIC; the music is absolutely perfect and dynamically adjusting to the situation. Doom3 has no music appart from the industrial symphony of the environment and HL2 has useless odd songs at predetermined points.
AI; 'nough said.

Deleted UserOn reflection, I do feel it's the game of the three with the most "legs". HL2 is overly scripted - fine the first time, second time it's easy to break. D3 is a straight shooter and replayable, but to little effect compared to its initial "wow" factor. Far Cry is replayable, difficult and well supported by its parent company in terms of engine upgrades.

That said, D3 is getting an EAX patch.
