I suppose I personally feel too distanced from the world events to view these things in the same perspective. It is very true that the world events affects us all, but the effect isn't that directly recognizable in my life that I connect the two like that. I'm interested in the big events, but kind of I separate them from my own life plans. And I have room for both, not thinking of them at the same time very much. I guess that's an effect of living in a country that never seems to be directly concerned with anything big. Ok, in terms of Iraq for example, Hans Blix is Swedish and we have one Swedish citizen locked up in Guantánamo, but that's about it. It's a precious thing really to be able to get up in the morning, have breakfast, go outside and worry about the everyday trivial personal stuff that we do here, when so many people live in war or under oppression in the world. It's too easy to forget that what we have is a very special living condition, where no really big problems exist! We don't have to worry about survival, we can express ourselves almost without limits, we have education and technology to help us. How many people in the history of the world have lived lives as easy as ours, when you think about it?
Living in an area where you are constantly reminded of world events in your everyday life, like the big conflict zones of the world, I guess these two perspectives merges with each other and becomes much harder to separate. Or if you were in a position to actually affect world politics, where your everyday life involved changing things and making important decisions for lots of other people. How would your perspective be then?
solo22, I'd suggest you invite Kofi Annan, George W. Bush, Romano Prodi or someone like that to lunch and discussion of this issue! I bet they would have much more interesting answers to this than anyone of us here, don't you think?

I lied. I know exactly where my life is going: to death
The grim reaper comes after all of us. Just don't help him in any way. Ok?
Solo: In answer to your question: I have learned many things about my life and myself thanks to that curve life sent me. I have been lucky to have a great support system via friends, family and forum members.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!!!

I see so many people worried about other things and other peoples problems (not saying thats completely bad) that they don't have a clue for themselves.
Basically, do you leave time for yourself, or do you spend all of it worrying about other things?

I see world events as the backdrop to my life. I see my life in terms of emotional stages of development, childhood, marriage, the struggle for independence and growth, the new parameters of middle age....
Yes, I do know me, who I am. I also know that you can make plans only to have them overset by events beyond your control. It's important to be able to cope with disappointment. To get up again when you've fallen down. To rest when you're tired out. To check the map every now and then to see if you're still on track, find you're not, look for a new destination and aim for it....
Truly important things to cherish in life - your health, your parents, your children, your friends, your integrity, your dreams, your play time, your SELF.
Petter, What a wonderful life we lead. Supermarkets, hot and cold running water, hospitals, civil order, public transport, beaches, recreation, sealed roads. Yes. Yet still we want more. Insatiable human appetites for more knowledge, more things, invented the wheel, the boat, the plane, the microscope, etc Without the desire for more, we'd still be in the caves, or maybe the trees?

But I agree that things come along in life that may shift the priorities of things you really want to accomplish. All I know is that my family is first and foremost, the rest can be shuffled around depending on the circumstances.
Solo, I wish it was me you met for lunch. It would have been the longest lunch of your life! lol
BTW: I posted a desperate topic in the technical forum (which not too many people seem to check out), so if you've played GK1, please, please, pretty please go read it! Thanks!

I'm not asking for everyone's secrets, just a simple answer. Some people do know and then others just look at you with a deer in the headlights look. Well in this case a three word answer. Sometimes you just have to ask yourself "how did i get here? where am i going? what have i done and what will i do with myself?" Every once in a while you just get to caught up in other things and not pay attention to yourself.
Michelle i would have been glad to have lunch with you. I do alot listening so it would have been very well worth it!

@solo You should have phrased it more precisely, maybe the couple couldn't figure out what you want from them! But they should have said something. I can answer that, anyway. I have no idea. Simple, isn't it?

you're diggin' pretty deep, makes some people squirrely, ya know? the reason being that they are so wrapped up in the outside world, appearances, and what other people think, that they've never even bothered to ask themselves the important questions...
to answer your question... yeah, i know myself pretty darn well, warts an' all... and sometimes i'd like to pull the covers up over my head and wish the world would go away... but... it's just not that easy, is it?
knowing myself, trusting my judgement, and believing that my heart will lead me in the right direction is all the knowledge and motivation i need...

| Deleted User | As an adjunct to your question, Solo, I've always wondered about those unique moments where your life made a pivotal change - you changed your courses in college which led you to get a different part-time job, where you met the love of your life - that sort of thing. They often are quite simple things in themselves, yet have major impact on your life, and in ways you could not have predicted.

That's deffinitly a good way to put it.
I don't know, maybe i'm sayin it wrong. i just can't say it any other way but "do you know?" I'm not really lookin to see if someone can predict the future, just seein if people know what they're doin and why......sometimes if you ask things such as do you know your life? some people actually sit down and figure it out and end up haveing a change of heart in a lot of different aspects of their being. It's quite a fun little project.
Then of course you have people that think way to hard and look too too deep for the answer and just go nuts about it. oh well. anyway this has been my latest project on the streets of NYC.

Well, do you? I'm at a stage in my life where I really don't know where I'm headed next. I know what I'll be doing for the next couple of years, but after I leave university... no idea. I'm kind of trying not to worry about it for the moment, and hoping I'll have more ideas when I come back from my year in Germany.

While being subjected to story after story, and other peoples talk and problems stop and think for a moment.  o you really know where you're at?  o you know where your life is going? While being bombarded with news and world problems do you stop and pay attention to your own life. Right before the Iraq invasion started a year ago I stopped reading, listening to or watching news. I was just sick of everything that had to do with the war, even before it started. It's pretty obvious you can't trust the information you receive before and during a war anyway, so I just thought I'd get the more reliable information after the war. But I've never really started getting the news again. It's such a relief not having to hear about all the people who die from starvation, terrorism or war.
So the question is, do you really know yourself and your life? I've decided to start asking random people while i'm out during work.
Well, do you?
I know myself and my life pretty well right now. My life is very easy and calm, i.e. it's not going anywhere. I've got to do something about that.
Feel free to ignore this post.
