MortalSpace Cadet![]() ![]() Posts : 190 Joined: 8 MAY 2004 Status : Online | Well, even though AGs are my kind of games (no death scenes and such ) I have played a few CRPGs over the years. I would suggest some of the titles below: StoneKeep - (Interplay) A fine, very old game (playing it now for the 6th time under DOSBox ), you have your character (well, his soul, or whatever you can call it) searching through a sunken castle in order to restore some Godly balance (I can't find a way to phrase it better ). Long story, a bit funny at places, good atmosphere, acting and so on. Lands Of Lore series (3 Games)- I played the 2nd (Guardians Of Destiny) and the 3rd and I found them very good and easy to play without making you feel frustration about what you need to do next. From westwood studios. Arx Fatalis (JoWood - if I remember correctly they are currently working on a sequel) Somewhat harder with a unique and also somewhat difficult magic system. Might&Magic IX (3DO) Great storyline. Morrowind - (Bethesda Soft) Unique from every aspect of gameplay (Official PlugIns : Tribunal, Bloodmoon). Many hours of games, lots (hundreds) of quests, as also there are many modifications that improve and enhance your gaming experience. Wizards & Warriors (Activision). Great story, even though you get your hands on the most powerfull weapon only at the end of the game. > If my memory serves me corectly, every single one of them is played using first person perspective. DJ SouzaJourneyman![]() ![]() Posts : 1452 Joined: 19 OCT 2002 Status : Online | Okay, I finally started playing a RPG: Knights of the Old Republic (the first suggestion in this thread ) I am currently in the first planet, solved some quests, explored the buildings and some apartmens. But I gotta say I'm not impressed. I heard lots of good things about this game, but so far I don't think is such a marvelous RPG. My biggest disapointent was with the fighting system. I was expecting to do some hack and slack myself, but it turns out I just have to tell my character what kind of attack I want to do, and he/she does all the fight by himself/herself. I just have to watch... Real bummer, as I was hoping that the light saber fights would be the most fun part in the game Also, the graphics aren't really impressive IMO. It's a good thing I don't care that much for graphics, anyway. A bad thing for myself is that my computer is finally showing its age, there are some few parts were the game runs a little slow (even after using ctrl+alt+del to shut off some of the current active programs). So far, it's been an OK game to me, nothing less. I certainly hope it will get better as I play... [center]DIEGO J. Most RPG's feature turn based combat and the system is similar to the Baldurs Gate one. Rank up your sword fighting points and skills for when you get your lightsabre. The fights get alot better with the force powers and lightsabre duels. Althought they are still turn based. I think you can swith the combat mode to a more real time approach so it doesn't pause after every attack which is what I did. You can still give orders and it queues your requests. P.s I thought the graphics were great. Not fantastic because they are still kinda based on the X-box version Dear Diary, My teenage angst bullsh*t now has a bodycount. |

I was just expecting something...different Now that I've played more of the game, I can say that it's getting better as I play. The characters and the plot is getting more and more interesting. Lots of subquests to complete, just like any good RPG should have. The game is very addictive. I'm having lots of fun! Even though the game was somewhat below my expectations, it is a good game. DJ SouzaJourneyman![]() ![]() Posts : 1452 Joined: 19 OCT 2002 Status : Online | I'm still playing KOTOR, and I'm finally having loads of fun with it! The first level in Taris was just OK, but later, in Dantooine, things really get interesting. After getting a ligthsaber, the fights finally got really exciting and fun to play and watch. Also, the graphics in Dantooine are so much more interesting to look at, the beautiful plains are som much more attractive than the cold city buildings in Taris. I'm glad I kept playing KOTOR, the game finally appealed to me at Dantooine. The subquests are a lot of fun. So far, I've been playing in the Light side of the force, I wonder how it would be in the dark side... I just arrived at Tatooine, lots of new things to see and discover. See ya, I'm off to play some more KOTOR! [center]DIEGO J. DJ SouzaJourneyman![]() ![]() Posts : 1452 Joined: 19 OCT 2002 Status : Online | Most of the times, I just can't do all those evil actions available in KOTOR, they're so mean! : That's probably why I have, so far, chosen the light side of the force. I always dreamt of being a hero, not a villain. And it feels good to make the right choices in the game. I'm still playing KOTOR, just finished all Tatooine sub-quests (except for 1 swoop race, they're kind of difficult) and then I moved to the planet Manaan. I gotta say that the level design in Manaan is very beautiful, the graphics are really nice. Just like the level design and graphics on Dantooine and Tatooine. I can't believe they started the game on Taris, definitely the most unappealing level I've played so far. Well, I will keep on playing KOTOR, I feel there's still a lot of things to see and do in the game. By the way, thanks a lot for suggesting KOTOR, Lucien! [center]DIEGO J. DJ SouzaJourneyman![]() ![]() Posts : 1452 Joined: 19 OCT 2002 Status : Online | Still playing KOTOR! You know, after completing most of the planets, I thought there wouldn't be any more interesting things to see. Kashyyyk wasn't that impressive, so I thought the game was kind of slowing down a bit... But then I headed to Korriban, to find the last Star Map, and I found that level to be particulary interesting. To learn more about the Sith and their motivations was truly a great idea, something I never saw in any Star Wars movie. After entering the Sith academy, I get to learn more about the Sith ideas and their true intentions. Somehow, they don't look so evil as before. Just misguided. The way they present the Sith in KOTOR made the game become more interesting and engaging. Too bad the newer movies haven't this sort of approach. I guess Mr. Lucas wouldn't have the courage to portray the Sith's motives from a different perspective, it would probably scare the lil' children. And we all know how Star Wars was "always" supposed to be a kiddies flick... : : : I will be playing more KOTOR soon, see ya! [center]DIEGO J. jalexSchattenjger![]() ![]() Posts : 2503 Joined: 5 MAR 2003 Status : Offline | I think Darkstone in the best RPG ever made and even with all the new ones out there it is still better than most. The only other one that even comes close is Dungeon Siege. I have played Darkstone more than any other game I own and the wife and I also play it together on our local network sometimes. It has lots more monsters to fight in the master level so each time you advance it is different. Everthing is random including the lands so every time you play it, it's different. I would say that game used the random generator better than any other game you will ever find. It has an interface that I think would work better than any other I have ever seen so far in any game including adventure games. It is very easy to learn and can do anything I have ever seen done in any game. |

If you liked Darkstone, then there are a few other high quality, isometric Action RPGs for the PC that you really should consider. Obviously, the Diablo series from Blizzard still reigns supreme amongst Action CRPGs but it only really shines in MP. The SP mode is okay but very, very linear with very little in-game story. Another one is Nox (published by Westwood). It was a very good Diablo clone - one that is most likely very cheap these days... assuming you can find a copy. Also, as mentioned by another poster in this thread, the newer Action RPG called Sacred is quite good. But for a similar game with MUCH more of a story and a far wider array of quest types, Divine Divinity and its sequel Beyond Divinity are hard to beat. They are SP only but well worth the money IMO. Both I would call Diablo Plus or D&-style RPG Lite - whichever bent you prefer. Of course for a fuller, more richly detailed role playing experience, most of the best titles for the PC have already been listed above. They range from the all-time great Fallout series of sci-fi themed, SP only RPGs using the SPECIAL rules and a terrific turn-based party combat system with massive replayabilty and loads of dark, wry humor to the latest and greatest full 3D real-time SP only CRPG, Morrowind (be sure to get the GOTY edition). In between there are several great CRPGs by Interplay's Black Isle Studios and their former partner BioWare using the wonderful Infinity Engine. These include the amazingly absorbing and macabre SP only Planescape: Torment, the epic (and some say the best ever) AD& 2nd Edition Baldur's Gate series and the more recent and more tactical combat oriented, D& 3rd Edition (transitional rule applications) Icewind Dale series. All are world-class games with full party systems and none should be missed. Another CRPG standout that I can personally and confidently recommend is Anachronox by Tom Hall using an ingeniusly altered Quake 2 engine for Eido's Ion Storm. It is without question my number one sleeper hit of the last 5 years. It is a unique blend of both PC and console game conventions with equal parts party based, full 3D turn-based combat with the most intuitive controls and best animations ever to go along with true RPG components and 3D third person adventure style exploration. But it has very few traditional puzzles. It does have an expansive set of highly original game worlds though with a terrific, gritty, old-fashioned detective story wrapped in an unrequited love story rolled into an amazingly effective and funny sci-fi story that even has some fresh, fun magical elements thrown in for added surprise. Anachronox also boasts a unique comic book hero look all its own and plenty of value in terms of length / scope and replayability. Last but not least, it has one of the most interesting groups of party members ever and you can switch to any of them as the leader on the fly, with ease in real-time. Each has his or her own special ability which must be used to get by some specific mini games / areas. But otherwise you can pretty much play with any of them in the lead at almost any time. The result is a truly one-of-a-kind hybrid game that oozes fun from end to end. A couple of other oddball CRPGs that had flaws but still rank as fun games with unique twists are Omikron: The Nomad Soul and Vampire: The Masquerade ~ Redemption. The first was a very ambitious and mostly successful 3D SP only real-time Action / Adventure / RPG from Quantic Dream (published by Eidos) that still transcends many newer games in terms of innovation. The latter is a lot more linear and (loosely) based on the venerable, old White Wolf Publishing P&P RPG series. It was created by Nihilistic and published by Activision. NOTE: Just remember to totally disregard the whole MP Storyteller Mode in Vampire: TMR. It utterly failed as a bold online experiment that has since been done successfully with BioWare's vastly superior, full 3D / full 3rd Edition D& Neverwinter Nights with its Aurora Construction Set and MP Online DM Mode. NOTE: Also be extra sure that the SP game is patched as it fixes a huge number of original flaws and adds several very important new features. Once patched, Vampire: TMR is a SP game using a very cool proprietary 3D engine that's well worth playing. In the same basic vein of 3D SP only CRPG hyrids, do NOT miss System Shock 2 or the original Deus Ex GOTY Edition. They are THE best FPS / RPG titles for the PC to date. Cheers, Terry . |

And thank you VERY MUCH, Terry, for posting the detailed descriptions of RPGs. It's very helpful. Terry PenrodGrand Inquisitor![]() Posts : 6693 Joined: 16 OCT 2004 Location: US, Texas Status : Offline | . Hi DJS - From a few of your earlier comments and those just above, I really think you would enjoy Divine Divinty from Larian Studios at http://www.larian.com/ It takes the solo hero (non-party based) Action-RPG formula used in Diablo along with the same kind of 2D / 3D isometric third person view and expands it to include MUCH more of a playable in-game story with all sorts of diverse side quests. It is also (primarilly) a mouse-driven game with a familiar interface / inventory system. But there are simply more choices for character creation / development, more different types of quests and more cool items to collect. The relatively large game world is highly detailed and full of good NPCs, so you can do all the exploration you want. But at the core of the game is PLENTY of very fun, Diablo-style combat with a number of fresh new enemy types in a pretty nice array of settings that range from the small town where you begin and two major "cities" where the main plot is centered to expansive farmland areas, wilderness / forest maps, mountainous caverns, caves, meandering sewers, a magically trapped prison, a haunted cathedral and of course some spooky tombs. There is also a major war going going on in the distance and you can choose one or all the many related side quests to become a hero or a traitor. Only a few forrays into those big battle zones are actually required though and most of them can be done in almost any order you choose. Even cooler is a series of remote portals that you must discover and activate all over the larger world map. These are a very nice touch as they save endless trekking on foot from each important area as the game unfolds. There are even Diablo-style secret gems that can be used to upgrade a very good array of weapons plus there are a tons of good armors, special traps, magical items with a full magic system and flexible stealth elements that you can combine nearly anyway you see fit. Additionally, the artwork is just splendid, the music grand and the limited voice acting quite good. Yes, there are a number of text based diaolg trees that you also must read but they are not very long and the writing is excellent. And in the end, whether you are an evil traitor or a heroic good guy, you will transcend the mortal life and venture on through a terrific desert area that almost feels like the outlying wilderness in Fallout (but in a much higher res) as well as some very cool swamps and onto... well, I'll leave that for you to discover on your own. A quick word of warning though - Divine Divinity does not require the very latest and fastest gaming PC but it still needs a fairly decent rig and the REQUIRED install size is quite big (well over 2 GB if I recall). I would also wait on the sequel to make sure you like the original. If so, it too now awaits your gaming pleasure. Now the bad news. DD is getting very hard to find at retail. I waited for several months between last Thanksgiving and early this year for Gamestop to restock the title - including all the many locations in the greater Houston area, being put on their preferred wait list and checking their main web site often - all to no avail. I did however finally find a reliable online retailer that still sold it. That web source was http://www.gogamer.com/cgi-bin/GoGamer.storefront/EN/Catalog and hopefully they still sell the game. Cheers, Terry . |
