If you start with Nethack and you want to play that you won't get to something else any time soon. It's enormous, but I can't handle it. I need some graphics and story with my game. For that matter, you should try Falcon Eye (?). It's a graphical NetHack conversion.
And if you like those Ascii games you could consider to start exploring the world of ZZT. There's a link at Underdogs. There's LOADS of games written for that. I didn't look into it, but I planned on trying some of them. Other things are more important right now, though,

I like Falcon's Eye because it looks nice and is a clean interface for it. But when I play it I miss the ease of the original ASCII. If I'm playing and one of my kids walks in the room, they'll exclaim "orcs, orcs" at the sight of a letter "o" or "snakes, snakes" when I'm surrounded by "s"s. It's amazing how frightening some letters can become.
Another graphical interface for Nethack which looks nice and has tons of flexibility is noeGNUd (spell it backwards to remember it). It's available here.
http://www.linuxgames.co.za/noeGNUd/
It includes support for different 2-D and 3-D interfaces. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm tempted just to get my ASCII characters standing up in 3-D. Check out the screenshots at the site listed above.
I admit I was hesitant to try Nethack in the beginning because of all the seeming complexity with the keyboard commands and characters representing objects. I thought it would take too much work to get into. Really, it didn't. I doubt I'll ever win the game, though. I just don't have the time to dedicate to it. But the depth of the game makes even short games fun.

Couldn't agree with you more. Torment is probably the most significant CRPG in the last 10 years or so. Or perhaps significant is a misnomer, as it's practical effects are limited to people just reffering to it. I'm not sure how much it actually has directly influenced other CRPGs. Actually, just playing Fallout and Torment sort of covers everything important about western CRPGs in the last 10 years.

Uniikki mentioned CRPG, what does that mean (the "C" in RPG)? ???

The C stands for computer. It is used when there is a danger of confusing the pen and paper rpgs and computer rpgs. Which, yes, are very different, but are both called the same. I suppose it was an unnecessary distinction to make in this case. The habit occasionally creeps up, since this is one of the issues concerning which people can be rather religious.

It's been worked on and continually having things added to it since 1985, if I recall correctly. It's descended from the original game Rogue. There are a whole bunch of ASCII character-based RPGs called Rogue-likes. Nethack is the greatest of them all. Think about it: close to 20 years development, practically none of it on graphics so it all goes into gameplay. It's a deep game. That makes it fun. You can do practically anything in it.
And the lack of graphics doesn't hurt it. It can be quite horrifying when an e suddenly appears in a doorway where you're headed to escape from a horde of b's early on. And some letters you never, ever even want to see.

Nice little (russian?) developed RPG. Combat is much like diablo but it has much more of a story/rpg element to it and it is HUGE.
Russian? LOL, I think the guys at Larian Studios will raise their eyebrows when they read that. They're from Belgium.
Fallout + Fallout 2
Required playing. Combat is turned base but that's no excuse for not playing these games!
These are still my favourite RPGs, as I prefer turn-based above real-time fights.

I might try Nethack first though, I reckon it is freeware, right?

Yes, I realised that after reading a preview of Beyond Divinity. Oh well...
Oh, and on topic - that new action RPG "Sacred" is supposed to be quite good. The demo was quite fun (although nothing really new).

I'm trying to play as a Breton mage this time around and it's quite a bit tougher than before, when I was an Altmer warrior. Still fun as ever though, and relaxing to wander around the wilderness. Until those d@mn cliff racers notice me...

Made by the same people who made Knights of the Old Republic so I would image a PC version is on the cards

"There are no plans for a PC version. Unlike Knights of the Old Republic which was designed from the ground up to be on both the PC and the Xbox, Jade Empire is being designed only for the Xbox and has no considerations for the PC. It will be an exclusive Xbox-only title."

It was quite a simple choice, actually. You see, I found out my sister-in-law own Baldur's Gate 1, so there! I will probably start playing in a week or 2.
Now, for my NEXT RPG, I will consider one of the many titles suggested in this thread.
I would like to thank once again everyone who contributed with RPG suggestions, I really was not sure of what game to play.
