Or Neverwinter Nights

Both Games are by Bioware who made Baldurs Gate 1 and 2.
On PS2 the best RPG are probably the Final Fantasy games or Dark Cloud 2.

Baldurs Gate 1, 2 + Expansions
I'm assuming from your comments above that you are talking about playing the console versions of Baldurs Gate. If so you REALLY need to pick up the vastly superior PC games - you really need to play all of them in sequence for full benefit! - Just for reference they would be:
-- Baldurs Gate -- Tales from the Sword Coast (expansion) -- Baldurs Gate 2 - Shadows of Amn -- BG2 - Throne of Bhaal (expansion)
Icewind Dale + Icewind Dale 2
More hack and slash than the Baldurs Gate games but they still have more plot than Diablo did. Worth a look if you like the Baldurs Gate style combat.
Planescape Torment
One of the most original RPG's available with a fantastic (and very unique) storyline (currently you can pick up a copy on budget for about £5 too). Play is similar to Baldurs Gate although if favours story over battles (which is a nice change).
Divine Divinity
Nice little (russian?) developed RPG. Combat is much like diablo but it has much more of a story/rpg element to it and it is HUGE.
Fallout + Fallout 2
Required playing. Combat is turned base but that's no excuse for not playing these games!
Arcanum
Graphics are VERY dated now and the combat is a bit rubbish but the whole "technology vs magic" theme is pretty good and there's some good questin' in them thar hills. You can grab this on budget as well so give it a try.
Gothic + Gothic 2
Very nice non-linear german RPG with excellent graphics and a nice big world to explore. Controls are a little fiddly in the first game but it's worth persevering with.

But you have to bear with 640*480 resolution graphics like in Baldur's Gate. It's the same engine. But I think there are already ways to increase the resolution as you can modify everything in the games with the engine editor available.

Lucien, thanks for the pics, I heard KOTOR is a really interesting game, besides, I enjoy the Star Wars saga very much (who doesnt? ). Those 2 screenshots make me eager to play both games.
Cerberus, thank you very much for providing the list and taking the time to comment each game. All these games look very promising.
InlandAZ, I never played any Final Fantasy game (can you believe it? ) I wonder if they have ANYTHING to do with that animated movie. I didnt like the movie that much, I thought it had a mediocre story development.
Elfstone, I am no so worried about graphic resolution, so 640*480 will do just fine. But it is nice to know this game features a good story and well developed charater interaction.
Once again, thanx everyone for the help! I will try to find some reviews about these games in order to learn more about each one. It is difficult to choose just one, specially because I have the feeling they are HUGE games, the kind that will take weeks, maybe months, to finish them...am I right?

Funnily enough I've being going through a bit of a Final Fantasy Fest recently (I shanghied my brothers PS2 and bought a copy of Final Fantasy Origins and Final Fantasy Anthology). Still ploughing through number 1 at the moment
Personally I think it's a bit of a stretch to call them RPG's though (although I tend to be biased towards PC RPG's).

It comes closest to the ever-promised concept that your hero's attributes affect the dialog and your chances to figure out mysteries. There are some certain limits for some things which will keep you from having success.

Its been a while since I play RPGs. I have been playing adventures most of the time, and I do not really know any good recent RPG.
So I would like to hear some suggestions of what everybody think are the best RPGs available lately. It could be from the last 5 or 6 years, top-notch graphics are not my priority. Also, if you have a personal favorite RPG that you think is underrated, I would like to know too.,
Mostly I would like to know about RPGs that were released to PSX and PC. You could mention a RPG that was released to other consoles, too, as I am going to buy a new console soon.
IIRC, the last RPGs I played were Diablo 2 and Baldurs Gate 2 to PSX2.
I liked the gameplay of Diablo 2, but I thought it was a kinda repetitive game, there wasnt too many story elements throughout the game, and there were few characters to interact with.
I only started playing Baldurs Gate 2, but I thought it was really interesting! I does seem like the kind of RPG I would like to play more in the future.
My preferences for RPG are third-person with real time combat and a good amount of story and characters to interact with. But I would play other kinds of RPGs, too, no problem.
As always, any help from my fellow adventurers is appreciated.
My Favorite is Darkstone. My Wife and I play it as a team with two computers connected through a router. We have logged more hours on it than all other games put together. We also play Dungeon Siege Legend of Arana. It has good graphics and very large maps with lots of ground to cover and can also be played on line or Single Player. I still think the old Darkstone is better but not by much.

Lvl 60+ rogue (used throwing knives) down the drain. And 50+ sorcerers and fighters. I never tried the higher difficulties introduced by patches. But reaching lvl 200 must be interesting... Or was it just 150? I'm not sure, tell me!

I don't like it too much. At first it looks like you got a lot of freedom of choice, but further into the game you quickly realise that this game is linear and doesn't reward your choice of profession. You need a patch for the controls to work, but after that you should be fine with them. Takes a while, but you get used to it, although it has its flaws.

Anyway, I think I just saw that game for a very good price on display at a magazine and comic book store. You know, here in Brazil, old games are sold on magazines, we dont usually have bargain bins on computer stores, they dont sell used games.
Sometimes, however, computer stores do sell budget versions of games, usually re-released versions that are half the price.
Thanks for the advice!

Gothic looks amazing with everything set to maximum! OK, there are better graphics these days, but the difference isn't that great.

Both games are quite enjoyable RPGs, with Avernum being a rather huge party based epic, where as Geneforge is more focused on the open storyline. Most people are put off by their appearances, but I find it truly a shame that everyone knows KOTOR and practically no one knows Geneforge 2.
Also I think Temple of Elemental Evil and Arx Fatalis deserve mentioning. TOEE is mostly a D& combat game, but quite fun one, and Arx Fatalis is, to me, the best dungeon romp since Ultima Underworld. Despite a rather klunky interface.

Kinda silly, dont ya think? Well, I have to admit I have a hard time playing 640*480 in RPGs these days like in BG and PS:T...and I can't bring myself to play Ultima 7 because the battles look so silly and feel strange! I know it's the best Ultima ever (probably). I tried it for about 5 times (for Black Gate and Serpent Isle likewise). I have to stop after some days. But I'm not in the mood for RPGs right now, anyway.
