Deleted UserWell, here in the UK we've just had Deus Ex;IW and have got both Unreal Tournament and Battlefield Vietnam next week, swiftly followed by my personal game-of-the-year, Far Cry.

Far Cry is possibly the toughest, mind bending piece of gameplay I've played so far based on the Research demo. Wow. Amazing stuff - like a Hollywood movie replete with stunning graphics and amazing sound. I CAN'T WAIT. MORE THAN UNREAL 2... this looks like a stunner in terms of cinematic potential and atmosphere with credible AI and gameplay to boot. WAHEY!

As for the others... well, Unreal Tournament 2004 looks good but for me, I think Battlefield Vietnam has the "edge". I've got a clan I'm in and me and a friend were talking about forming a Battlefield Vietnam arm once it's out. The idea of bombing around in a helicopter with 60's prog rock hits booming in the speakers frankly does it for me, even if the subject matters more than a little off-putting.

Whatta month!

Over here DX2 will be released in the next week, or maybe it's already out...I don't know.
I no longer care because I can't play it on my system, anyway and I don't want to upgrade for the time being. Maybe later.

Is Far Cry multiplayer only like Battlefield Vietnam or does it have a single player game?

Deleted UserJuji, are you for real? Or have you been busy for the past few months?

Far Cry is in the main a single player game with the AI of Half Life X10, beautiful vistas and incredible atmosphere. Just on the strength of the two demo's, in particular Research -

- I'm excited. The enemy circle you, distract you, isue orders and hunt you down with boats and helicpoters should you announce your presence. It's also got a sniper rifle with huge range (you have to "hold your breath" to judge your aim properly), hangliders, buggys and other vehicles plus a group of genetically engineered monsters that can leap 25 feet into the air at you.

The sound effects are chunky and occasionally witty as you dropm in on conversations, troops bark orders at eachother, the guns are meaty and the soundtrack something from a Bruce Willis Hollywood movie.

Based on what I've played and what I've seen of Doom 3 and Half Life 2, Far Cry actually seems more tempting purely based on its environs and Bruckheimer-style presentation.

Get excited!

I'd seen a few ads and screenshots, but I hadn't really heard much about the game.  I generally don't really keep up on upcoming stuff.  The game looks really cool, but if you think it could excite me more than HL2, you are quite mad.

Mad I tell you!!!!!!

Demos aren't really an option for me.  I'm still on a 56K modem.

Deleted UserI'm sure you could pick it up from a magazine cover CD, although I'm not sure about you as I can't remember which country you're from. There should at least be the first demo somewhere on coverdisc, the second is PC Gamer only, the third (comin March 15th) is called The Boat and I'm not sure I'm going to d/l it. Two levels is enough to spoil!

Deus Ex 2 disappointed me, it was good, but it wasn't as good as the original.

Far Cry is alright, no save feature almost ruins it for me though.

Vietnam looks pretty good and I'll probably get UT 2004 special edition eventually.
NO SOUP FOR YOU!

Deleted UserPre-Ordered Vietnam, anyone else who gets it is welcome to load up X-Fire and look for my fragging alter-ego, SquareJawHero.
Nice name, huh?

Not a huge fan of UT2004. The demo was OK but it felt like playing with toys. All plastic, graphically merely bleh and even lacked the style of 2003. Very twitch with not enough skill for me. Call Of Duty, for example, requires you to get used to handling each gun correctly and knowing their limits - rifles are awesome in the right hands.

And you don't like Far Cry because of the lack of a quicksave? The demo's saves were in excellent places! You really had to think harder about overcoming your enemies - no "guns blazing" tactics there whatsoever.

However, if you're playing the research map, go left up the hill and eliminate the guards there using a silenced machine gun. Take the torch and health packs if you need them, the game will save in the hut, come out, go left to behind the barrels.

I love this bit.

Aim at the yellow canisters at the guard on the far left. Blow him sky-high and his buddies will start to attack. Push the box and the two barrels down the hill to squash them (YAY!) then head back up to the sandbags and the mortar and start blasting away at the more distant mercs - observe the lovely physics as the fly everywhere!

Meanwhile, if you've use your binoculars, check your radar for mercs trying to flank you or come up the hill to the left or the right. Eventually, a helicopter will attempt to land... I've never hit it, but wait until it touches down before mortar'ing it's sorry a s s. If it takes off, pick off the gunman and the 'copter will turn tail.

This whole sequence is completely random. I also had fun pushing things off into the pier and blowing up the boat in the distance and watching it hit the water.

There's also a Crymodification utility you can find on the forums at the Far Cry website. Using this you can spawn enemies and vehicles, look at each model available on the demo and set up fights between Mercs and mutants.

Apparently, this game is a modders dream come true - they're modding the demo without an SDK! If anyone gets it, look out for ol' Squarejaw.

Unreal 2004
----------------

This is just SO much better than 2003 it's ridiculous. Onslaught RULES.

Far Cry.

Mmmmmm.... Faaar Cryyyy.....(guargleguargleguargle)

Unfortunately the demo didn't run very well on my PC (although it was still playable thankfully). Very nice game though. Very nice indeed. Might be worth a system upgrade soon methinks.

Well, I just finished playing through the full version and I have to say...I liked it.

I was prepared to hate it after trying the demo in all it's x-box ickyness but I took a leap of faith and bought it anyway - it appears the UK release has been fully patched up and I have to say it's pretty damned good.

I still have some issues with it (it's far too short, the unified ammo thing is still a rubbish idea, you can't lean around corners and the GUI is pretty clunky) but it definately "feels" like Deus Ex. Story carries on nicely from the first too.

Suprisingly it also runs like a dream on my increasingly fragile old machine, despite the demo running like a dog.

Plus, playing "see how many unconcious guards you can throw long-distance into a trash can" never grows old

I am now (once again) officially looking forward to seeing what they do with Thief 3 now (despite the third person mode...grrr).
