The Neverhood was apparently to be the first in a series of adventures in the same universe, which never materialized. This is a crime of the highest order, because The Neverhood is a breathtakingly original concept, a work of art with great humor and not a bad little game to boot.

Also impressive is The Neverhood's cosmology, one of Biblical proportions, all written out in the game -- if you can bear to read about 20-25 screens of text. I've never seen anything quite like it in a game before. Much of it reminds me of a cross between Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, so it's pretty entertaining despite its length. Worthwhile finding a copy online if you can't bear to read it in game.

The only problem I had with the game is one of things which makes it great at the same time -- its abstractness. You find yourself doing things just because you can, not sure of what, if anything will result. I also found myself bewildered by plot elements that popped up, even after reading the Hall of Records and collecting the disks. For example, why is Bil the robot stuck in a hole? Why is a teddy bear hanging overhead and why does he want it so badly? And why does Willie keep dropping flowerpots on my head? I'm trying to help here!

Aw, I nitpick too much. It's an surreal game, a comic game, and a brilliant one at that. If I want more reality in my life I can pull a double shift at work or something.

At any rate, I wholeheartedly recommend tracking it down on eBay -- it's worth the time and trouble as one of the truly original games of the genre.

Neverhood's cosmology ?

Never knew Neverhood was that deep.
I thought it was just about a bunch of Claymation thingies getting into mischief.
Only played the demo and that was tricky. The full game had a rep of being very tough. If I remember correctly it was a M$ game, so they had no real desire in keeping the series going much less keeping it in print.

Deleted UserActually, the game was published by Spielberg's Dreamworks.  There was also a soundtrack CD released.  There was also a second game released, called Skullmonkeys.  I don't think it's actually a sequel (I've never run across a copy), but it was made by the same Neverhood team.

Skullmonkeys was a platformer that I never finished. The Klay was there, but the gameplay was not. I seem to recall that the music was great as well.

Deleted UserI felt the Christian and religious themes were shining through. In the best sense of the word. I mean, there must be lots of awful evangelical Christian edugames out there that I would give a wide, wide berth.

The music is by Terry Taylor, another cool and funky Christian.
I bought his Imaginerium last year, which consists of the Neverhood Songs plus the Skullmonkeys and Boombots. Great pick-me-up music! People who are into ebaying, can find it in the Christian Religious Music section.

The Neverhood.... what can I say... diddly diddly cuddly op...

Deleted UserGack, don't give good reviews to things! I've spent enough money on games already.
Incidentally, that's a fantastic title for a review of the Neverhood. Copyright it quick!
Now, what are you waiting for? Start on the Journeyman Project games!

I probably will -- unless The Longest Journey tackles me before I can install Journeyman Project 1!

One of my fav games. Never thought about The Neverhood's story about Klayman's world being related to Christianity though... Very tough game. Music fantastic. Love, love, love the game.

We can be heroes, just for one day.

They're very different games.
But since the Neverhood was third-person, you should play a first-person game next. So go install JP1.
(Actually, I'm pretty sure JP1 has to be run off the CD. It did some funny things on my system.)

Deleted UserFickfack, you, an AGP member, have not played the Neverhood?
I'm shocked. Don't those secret brotherhoods Black Hand societies have rules and admission requirements? Tsk...

Andro, I agree with every single word on your initial post (except maybe "bewildered"
. To me it ranks with The Dark Eye as the most artistic adventures ever.

Ah, Neverhood! One of the most unique adventures of all time... And I agree that the story is quite deep and philosofical. But the humor in the game is the best part (along with the graphics, of coarse)!

I recently bought it on Ebay. It's quite rare and wanted. I've been trying to get it for some months before I was lucky. The price wasn't what I would call a bargain either  :

But hey, I guess it's worth it

Now you made me curious what you previously linked to. Especially when Betje reacts with the words 'Good Lord!'

Must've been exciting stuff

Deleted UserNot really.  Betje wandered in last night and immediately posted three times.  Each post was sarcasm or nastiness directed at me.

She's such a pleasant person.

Anyway, I was posting about other issues in other forums and I got my Neverhood link mixed up with the In Memoriam link.  No biggie.
