Topic: What do you play...

Deleted UserWhat do you play if/when you get sick of adventure games?
oes that ever happen to you?

Sometimes I need a break from a game and I go off to something like Civilization or SimCity.

I avoid action games but own several action/adventures.
In general, I select games where I can think in an organized manner and react accordingly.  The fast action/reaction syle of game makes me a nervous wreck.  Must be old reflexes.

I own one primarily action game - American McGee's Alice.  I plan to play that one soon using God Mode and a walkthrough.  I'll never be able to do it without that extra help.

Where do you go for adventure R&R?

Apart adventure that is half my life
I also play RPGs. I thought baldur's gate 1 and 2 were great, but I don't think I will get neverwinter nights. It looks more like hack n slash than a real RPG.

I bought morrowind though and I expect it in 2 days. It looks like really cool. I think RPGs are the only genre apart from adventure with an ability to 'tell a story' in a good way.

Apart from adventures and rpgs I'm also a fan of basketball and football (or soccer as you call it in the states) so I play the EA sports series NBA live and FIFA.

Some years ago I was also a big fan of space simulators. I think Wing Commander games were really cool. Especially the video sequences were great.

I love my Gameboy Advance. Golden Sun is a wonderful puzzle filled adventure. I also enjoyed Scooby Doo and the Harry Potter games for GBA and Gameboy.
I'll play it while my family watches lame TV.

Deleted UserI'm with you on the books and reading.  My other hobbies are cooking, a little bit of painting (watercolors), history and my dog and cats.  I guess that I can call JA a hobby too.

We recently moved from a  too large house to one that is just perfect.  We are almost settled and when that is accomplished we plan to do a bit of traveling.  Can I call that a hobby too?

ooooh.. nice thread, harriet!

ok first of all, there's no such thing as a "too big" house.

secondly, yes, i think travelling is a wonderful hobby.

finally, it seems as if this thread has mutated into What do you do when you're not playing adventure games (i.e. hobbies in general) from What do you play when you're not playing adventure games.  so, if we're talking about just games, when i'm not adventuring on my pc, i head over to one of my many consoles, where the likes of SSX Tricky and Crash Bandicoot (among others) keep me happy
if we're talking about hobbies in general, i love movies, music (listening and playing), reading, and wrasslin' with my dog (and long walks on the beach, candlelit din-- wait, this isn't a personal ad...)

Hi,

Well, Pandora's Box is a great puzzle game with great fairy tale stories.  I have it up on the desktop and it is great for a break.

I also play games like Undying, Alice, Deus Ex, Soulbringer, NOLF, Morrowind, M&M and the such.

I try (when two are released about the same time) to have one adventure game and one RPG/Action game up and that way for me, a little of each is a great way to go especially when in an adventure game and pulling my hair out because I can't see the forest for the trees.

Good topic!
I have Morrowind installed on my notebook computer, its runs too slowly on my desktop, I need a better video card.  I am playing it but very slowly!  I love how it looks, and the non-linear play, but for an adventure gamer it's rather daunting.

As for other games, I really like to play games on my Palm Pilot (m505 to be exact).  Zap2016, a little arcade shooter, is nice.  Bejeweled, a simple, very addictive puzzle/strategy game, is even better.  The folks at astraware ( http://www.astraware.com ), make the best Palm games!  I'm temped to get a Sony Clie PDA (also a Palm OS machine) because the screen is so good.

Deleted UserMorrowind is, indeed, fantastic.  If you like to be presented with a rich (linear) story you will want to go for a Interplay/Bioware story, but if you can make it on imagination alone you will love this title.

But you need a fast system to run it.  It runs slow on my 1ghz/GeForce 2 machine.

Either I settle down with a book, or I plug in a japanese RPG. They're always fun. Better storyline than most non-japanese RPGs too, especially when compared to Diablo. Or as I call it, the 'walk-walk-kill-walk-kill-kill-walk-yawn' game

I watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Actually I'm dipping my toe into RPG's.  I've had M&M IV loaded in like forever and every once in awhile I'll play a little more of  it - it actually is fun but geeez louise those manuals lol.  It also helps to have a son that knows RPGs inside and out so he helps me a bunch.

Adventure R&R?

Puzzles: Nahan is a favorite as are Smart Games I-III and Jewels of the Oracle I & II.

Driving Games: Rally Trophy, Rally Championship and Spirit of Speed 1937.

RPG/Driving: Mafia.  Sometimes driving a taxi around Lost Heaven is just the ticket at the end of a long day.

Thanks Clockwise for the tip on other games.  I do like non linear, it's just that an RPG can be a bit overwhelming, for me, a "walkthrough using" (I know, horrors!) puzzle impaired, adventure gamer.   Morrowind was the one RPG I wanted to play more than any of the others - it's the one that really appealed to me.   Game visuals are really, really important to me, and I love how Morrowind looks.  I also like it that you have many ways to be successful in the game.

I am getting a lot of ideas on what else to play, from this thread.

I play lots of other genres but some of my favorites which I have played to death over the years would have to be --

Morrowind

Superb game, nice and open ended with lots to do. The expansion for it should be out nexy month as well with "huge, epic sized dungeons" and two new cities. Spiffy.

Thief : The Dark Project / Gold

Everyone should own this game.
For those that don't know it's classified as a "First Person Sneaker" in which you play a thief caught up in an ancient war between nature and technology in a bizarre medieval/victorian style city, who spends most of his time *avoiding* a confrontation with the guards and creatures in the game. Very, very cool game (but scary as hell in certain levels). It's quite old now as well so most people shouldn't have too much trouble running it.

Planescape : Torment

Even if you don't normally like RPG's, the storyline in this one is enough to keep you playing. Best. RPG. Ever.

System Shock & Shock 2

Excellent (and very creepy) Sci-Fi horror action/RPG's. With Looking Glass Studios gone though it might be hard to find a copy.

Well, it doesn't happen very often, but whenever I need a break I usually play some type of puzzle game (Snood is pretty cool) or cut into my daughter's Playstation 2 time.  I also take the opportunity to do some computer maintenace without worrying I'm going to lose a saved game.
My name is Bethany and I'm the daughter of Gamergal/Michelle.

Just finished an "old", but unused copy American Mcgee's Alice that came bundled with a video card which I no longer use. It had very good gameplay, but I liked it even better for the incredible graphics---talk about getting full immersion....
Although not an interest at all at the time, on a fling I bought Medal of Honor-Allied Assault. Wow! For a die-hard Adventurer, I was embarrassed that I actually enjoyed that one tremendously....so much that I will be getting the sequel to that one.

I don't have many games on PC apart from adventures. I do tend to play simple webgames or RealArcade games. And I have allways been fan of the Links Golf games and turn based strategy games like Lasersquad and Spacecrusade.

I also have a bunch of consoles I like to play all kind of games on, but mostly racing games...still trying to beat Manx TT on my Sega Saturn!

What I play when not playing Adventure?
I have really enjoyed Anachronox (sci-fi RPG)  For an RPG it was not very complicated . . . but the characters are so much fun!  The cut 'movie' scenes where fantastic!  I mean for computer-generated characters, I was so impressed evertime I got to a pivotal point and got to see a little scene!  And the voices - I mean they are like real actors.  And of course, Sly Boots is a little like Tex Murphy, only in the future and computerized . . . need I say more.

Bad thing about Anachronox - my computer had a glitchy time playing it . . . . patch didn't help much.  And some of the hints didn't seem to fit 'my' game . . . sorry JA.  If you've never played an RPG, this may be it , especially if  you are tired of 'fantasy' stuff.

I also play IF games, text fiction games, especially the non-fantasy ones from good old Infocom.

Anachronox is great! one of the guys who programmed it is still making a new patch. he`s working somwhere else right now, but is making the patch when he has time (I`m beta testing it with a few other guys). still some bugs to kill, but the game never crashed or anything when I tested the newest beta the other day..

If you think there was to much running around in the beginning of the game he has implemented a taxi service
...pay a few bucks to move around faster

Good topic...

I play other sorts of games at the same time as adventure games - so I just shift over. They are usually very long in comparison so I have a running game of Outcast, NOLF or IJ going. NOLF2 is on my desk and will be my next ongoing adventurey FPS, stealth games.

I also have Hitman 2 - but will load it next.

But I am pretty high energy - so I am always doing a lot of things on any given day. I can't sleep until I have read for a while - so I have several books going, It's fall and getting time to start the garden redo for winter, another month or so and the bulbs go in. Plus I like to play catch football with my youngest and hike thorugh the forest next door - so always something
