I do have the game on my shelf, but there are also lots of others. However I bought it because it looks as if it would be a good (not great) game to play. Maybe its also because the game have a sort of connection (a bit) to one of my ADV heroes TEX.

*whispers* It's a fun game. A little rough around the edges and not all fancied up. But I thought the storyline was a strong point and liked Nick Delios - the main character. Hope we see him again.

Status : Online | Because, IMO, this game is one of the biggest gaming disappointments of the past year.
The game looked particularly bland, with badly integrated characters and the video quality is just short of terrible. I can cope with the dated look and feel though.
But not only are some of the puzzles very obscure, the game is also not very strong on feedback. Need to put back together scraps of papers? You have to stumble on them by chance to even guess there might be such a puzzle to solve (they are hidden in obscure places), You have to deal with a terrible UI where you have to align them in 3D _and_ the game doesn't give any sign when you finally get them right (which is not particularly clear).
There were many other cases where I just didn't get what was expected of me (and the game gave no clue).
I don't expect to be spoonfed puzzles and their solutions but a gentle nudge once in a while would be nice. Conspiracies seems to have been designed only to get you stuck and stuck again and stuck again...
If that's your kind of game, give it a try. Personally, I got annoyed, shelved it and am keen to forget about it.

Anybody read the letter the makers of Conspiracies wrote to PC Gamer after they reviewed the game and gave it a really low score?

If anyone's interested in playing though, I'm trading/selling it over in the Swap forum.

It's obviously a good thing that we all have different tastes. This would be a dull place otherwise.
I just couldn't take anymore of that game though.
I hadn't heard about the letter to the mag. Does anyone care to summarise what it says?

The developers criticized PCG for not supporting indie developers, and seemed to suggest among other things, that they should've been given some special consideration for spending five years of their own time and money on the game.
Here's a couple of choice quotes from PGC's response:
"I'm not sure which is more surprising: That indie developers should get brownie points, or that Conspiracies took five years to make".
"Yes, we enthusiastically support small developers - we just don't support bad games".

My feelings exactly. I have no problems supporting games made by smaller developers, but if the game isn't fun and I see another game for the same price by another, bigger developer that looks like it's more fun, I know which way my money's going to go. That's why I wouldn't want magazines like PCG to start sugar-coating their reviews of Indie games. Just give me an honest review and let me sort it out for myself.

As for the game itself, I found much to like about it. Did it have a garage quality about it - at times. So did the early Tex games and I still find them great to play.
I ended up with the view that Conspiracies was worth what I paid, had a fun story, interesting characters and while not an "A" game, it was still pretty good.
As for whether indies should be held to the same standards. In some areas yes - in others no. If I pay top dollar for a game from a well financed company - I should have a right to expect higher end graphics and such. I would not apply the same expectations to a lower budget project. I would expect creativity in the story and areas that are not as limited by finances.
To expect a game produced on a budget of 100,000 or even less to match up to a game where 1 million was spent with a whole crew of professionals working on it - is unrealistic and unfair.
