A great 'underdog' movie is Dead Man by Jim Jarmusch, starring Johnny Depp. It's a kind of anti-western, about a man who travels from the world of the living to the world of the dead. Great film, and great music by Neil Young.

Dog Soldiers.
Granted it doesn't have the sophistication of the films you have mentioned so far but it does have several key elements that, in my mind, make a winning film.
1. Werewolves. 2. Foul mouthed British squaddies 3. A VERY tongue in cheek sense of humour. 4. It's set in the Highlands 5. Werewolves.
It's basically a (very) low budget British horror movie set in the Scottish Highlands in the style of Evil Dead 2(but with Werewolves). Very funny film (but you might need a British sense of humour for it).
Did I mention there were Werewolves in it?

I still prefer "Eldritch Horrors From Beyond the Stars" but, from a traditional point of view, Werewolves are "The Daddy".
None of that wussy prancing about in velvet cloaks and sipping blood from wine glasses for them. No siree!

Dark City Just brilliant. One of my all-time favorite movies. Great combination of a profound question (identity) and stylish sci-fi.

I thought "Amelie" was a really enjoyable movie. Kind of the opposite of "Grave of the Fireflies" in some ways.
"City of Lost Children" has some amazing visuals. And the scenes with six identical clones are pretty mind boggling
"Jin-Roh" is a great anime sci-fi (of sorts) about love between a terrorist girl and an elite anti-terrorist unit member (but much more complex than that). Also features a very bloody but authentic version of the Little Red Riding hood story.
The part I like best about Japanese movies is that they always keep me guessing till the end. Most American movies seem too predictable to me (sure, there are exceptions, but they're just that - exceptions).
Hmm... that's two French movies, two Japanese. Could it be that I'm not much of a Hollywood fan?
I forgot my sig.

Yes, "City of Lost Children" is very cool. Ron Perlman is rad. I forgot the name of the brothers who directed CoLC but they also did a noirish film called Delicatessen. Very similar strange setting deal. I liked the game too.
"Brazil": awesome. From Terry Gilliam, a dark comedy. Gotta see it.
Leon: the Professional: ohoh one of my favorite movies two of the coolest people: coolest actor Jean Reno and "if she were president of the United States she'd be called Baberham Lincoln" Natalie Portman. Hot damn.
The Jackal: more recent redo of the DAy of the Jackal. It's like good songs that escalate.

Yes, they also directed "elicatessen" but I haven't seen that. Jeunet also did "Amelie" and, of all things, "Alien: Resurrection".
Hmm, I'll have to check out this "Brazil" thing. Terry Gilliam is great. And so are all Monty Python movies

Time bandits is another one of his films well worth a look. Probably the darkest kids film you're ever likely to see  didn't I read the Hallmark channel were paying for two sequel tv-movies? Wonder whatever happened to that idea...)
Also, "28 days later" is looking pretty damned good. (Out the end of the month I think, in the UK at least). Another nice little low budget British post-apocalyptic horror movie).
