| Deleted User | I would say just the opposite! Replaying the other Myst games first will only emphasize the differences between them and URU. So long as you remember who Atrus and Catherine are, that's pretty much all you need to know. (URU features their daughter.) The gameplay in URU is radically different from the other three games, and what story you need to know is pretty well self-contained.
On the other hand, any excuse to play Myst, Riven and Exile is a good excuse.

There really was no need to even pretend to link Uru to Myst. It is an entirely different game with very different controls. For a start you have a body that needs to jump and leap and push stuff around. The D'ni numbering system, the linking books and various related architectural details aside, the linking of these two games is rather deceitful. Uru is definitely NOT Myst 4.
It's a good looking game though, and certainly enjoyable, but very distinctly different. So by all means reply the other games for enjoyment, but they won't help you with this one.

In fact, there isn't much of a story at all, and what little there is doesn't make much sense. Of course, neither do the worlds, puzzles or control scheme. My best advice about Uru would be to return it if you haven't opened it. Wait until the price drops and/or Uru Live is actually open, then MAYBE you'll have something.

One main reason to start with Myst, Riven & Myst: Exile before URU is so you don't get turned off the main Myst series by playing URU. Only by playing the great original games will you truly be able to reasonably assess (ie. get a perspective for) URU which apparently (since I haven't anywhere near completed it yet) is nowhere near being a Myst #4. That doesn't mean I'm trashing URU because I like a lot of what I've seen of it so far, but I agree so far with those who are more familiar with it that it just doesn't have that 'Myst' feeling and probably should have not been connected with Myst to start with!

The future ain't what it used to be!

Status : Online | Hi, Uru is designed so you don't have to know the stories of the other Myst series games to enjoy it. Of course, if you always wanted to play the other games, it doesn't hurt to know the stories in the other games. It's the same world of D'ni, though not, as was remarked, a sequel. From what I've read, Myst IV, an actual sequel, is in still in development by Ubisoft (though I read that a long time ago, I don't know for sure). Uru is not a sequel. So, I'd do whatever you want to do, since both ways make sense. The game tells you everything you need to know with regards to the story. I do think the story could have been done more clearly, but gameplay does reveal it, along with all the assorted stuff you get to read in the game.
Oh - one word of warning - I like the other games, but I especially love Myst. I love how Myst looks, but it's an older game, and it doesn't play full screen. It's static imagery, point and click, and the graphics, though lovely, are not the graphics of today's games. RealMyst, the 3D version of Myst (same game, same gameplay, but a gorgeous 3D engine, and some of the ages have weather!) might be more appealing to you. The sequence of the games is Myst (or realMyst, either one), Riven and Exile.
Hope this helps.
Regards, mszv

I played Uru next. Now, I'm playing Riven...and there is NO comparison. I mean NO. Graphics, puzzles, POV.
I won't tell you why, or whether this is good or bad, but go ahead with Uru if you want. There is no "series" as far as I'm concerned.
If you need D'ni references...numerals, etc...they are easy to find elsewhere (and I don't consider looking elsewhere for that a cheat where Uru is concerned).
Good luck.

I am glad you said that as I was kinda thinking about getting it but I did have doughts about it. Riven was the only one of the myst games that I liked and I knew Uru was not like that one at all.

Status : Online | For the sake of clarification, I have played them all before and I have enjoyed them all. I've been cautiously reading what I can about the game here on the boards and I am prepared for the interface jolt.
I guess what I'm trying to get at is - is there enough stuff here for a longtime fan of the game that I'd get more out of URU by revisting my roots in Myst/Riven/Exile or does it not really matter? I'm getting the impression it does not, which is fine, I'm just wondering how best to plan out my gaming come the granddaddy of gaming days, December 26. Oh yeah.
Also - Random aside. Gogamer.com has Uru for $29.90 U.S. right now. I'll put up a post in adventure deals as well. Will Christmas never come!!!!

Uru is nice. And no you won't get more out of it if you play the others first. Truly.
