Yes. Yes and no. Price varied.

Some games fetch very high prices on ebay. Treasure Hunter recently went for $300. I think that's a record. Obviously I'm not going to pay that much.

Here's the link
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1395558122

But it's a great source for older, not very well known DOS games and those can sometimes be very inexpensive (less than $5).

GameTZ is another good source for older games and out of print games.

Yep I just started shopping on eBay. I recently acquired The Black Dahlia for a pretty good price considering most new adventure games in Australia cost around $90. I am quite happy using eBay now

It really depends. If you're lucky and the title you're after isn't too well-known, you'll get your game for a very low price.

But if you're going after one of those Sierra classics collections, be prepared to pay outragous amounts of money for it.

I've won awesome deals on eBay before.  Practically every single auction (about 33 in all) were great.  Only had two poor experiences.  One time I got half of my products I paid for and the other time they said the game included the box but it didn't (but I didnt paymuch for it anyway).  Last night I won Brazil on DVD for 11 bucks...

Yes, I have bidded on games at ebay, won a few of them, but I won't pay a high price for them. The ones I get from ebay, are the ones that I can't find in stores or Amazon, or the games website anymore. Couple weeks ago on ebay, I purchased Broken Sword-The Smoking Mirror for only 6.74, in box, never opened. I had accumulated so many computer games over the years, then I started to sell them on ebay with much success.

I've used ebay a few times.  Never had a problem.  Picked up a few bargains as well.  I mainly use it for buying computer games and dvd's.

As for price.  Its supply and demand.  Say your after a certain game,  you do a search and find that there is only one copy on offer.  The game is quite hard to get hold of,  there is a bidding war and the game finally sells at $50.  You might find that the very next week you search for the game again and you find that there are 3 copies available.  These 3 copies probably sell for $25-30 each.  Normally the more there is of a certain item available on ebay at anyone time the cheaper it will go for.

My advice for ebay:
on't get into a bidding war.  Set a price your willing to go to and stick to it.  Only bid (if possible) within the last few minutes.  Why bother bidding with 3 days to ago?  You are just inflating the price.  If your unsure about anything  concerning the auction ask the seller a question.  Lastly check peoples feedback.  If they have too many negatives - stay clear.

LOL!!  Just trying to help out my fellow forum members.

Of course people still need to work out which piece of the advice is the "secret weapon of ebay."

"secret weapon of ebay",  sounds like some gigantic deathray you need to destroy in a fantasy rpg.

Other than gametz, ebay is really the only consistent source to acquire the older, out of print games. Most of my older games come from ebay since I wasn't a fan when they were originally produced. Prices tend to run in cycles. Sometimes I've seen a game (like Obsidian, for exp) draw a price of $66, other times you can get it for $20. I've learned a few things. Be patient. If a game you want drew a very high price you can bet there will be several listings coming up. Wait for them. Bid only once and VERY late. Definitely check the sellers feedback. None of this applies, however, to the exceptionally rare games like Treasure Hunter, Celtica, etc. They always go high as do the Sierra collections because of popular demand. Almost never a bargin here.
But ebay works and you can get great deals.

I started shopping on ebay in '99, and have, since then, bought several items and spent a lot of money.  Fortunately, not once have I had problems with a transaction that the seller hasn't been willing to rectify.

Prices... yep, I've always gotten a good deal.  If it's not a good deal, I don't bother buying it from an auction site.  Also.. I'm pretty anal about my shopping; I don't automatically assume that just because an item is being auctioned, it must be a bargain.  This is especially true since I've seen brand new items (I'm not talking rare, vintage, or other collectible-types) go for more than their retail value.   This is because, as paulie warned, people get into bidding wars, and all that matters is winning the auction.  I go and look up the retail price for something and only bid on it if it's an irresistable deal.

Yeah, I did, and it sucked.  I orderd The Beast Within from a guy, and he sent me the game...No box, no manuals...and it was in French!  I got the French Version of the Beast Within for $15.  Yep...great.  Crappy.  Hey, Maybe I'll post it in the selling section...

Believe it or not this is absolutely true.  The amount of times i have seen brand new pc and console games sell for more than retail (on Ebay) is unbelievable.

Hello everyone.
I use Ebay regularly.
On Ebay I find it best to check all the english language sites. ie USA, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, at the same time for rare games.

The Ebayers I dislike the most are the ones who will only ship to USA or Canada, if your selling what difference does it make, buyers pay postage. Having said that I recently got one seller to post to me in the UK with free postage. (It's almost Christmas).

Before you buy on Ebay, make sure the game(s) is not available on any of the websites that carry older games (most of us know who they are). This is especially true because first, some games that are declared RARE on Ebay are not so rare. For instance, Broken Sword 1 is selling on one website for $9.95. Second, if you buy more than one game on a website, the shipping costs are not that great. On Ebay, some sellers try to make extra bucks on the shipping. You may think you've gotten a great deal, but by the time you figure in the shipping, it's not so great!

The future ain't what it used to be!

Generally i find most sellers are quite flexible.  I have asked 3 people who listed their auction with the shipping only to USA/Canada option whether they would ship to the UK and all 3 said yes.

I've bought a couple things on ebay. Mostly old Lone Wolf books that I couldn't find anywhere else. Mostly I just browse around it to see what's new.

Hi all,
I like ebay.  I've gotten some nice deals, and I've been outbid a few times.  I just don't like bidding very much.  I actually prefer the non-bid part of ebay  - half.com.  I got Morpheus at half.com (good price) and some out of print CDs (new too).
Regards, mszv

I love Ebay and buy often there. Even being from another country I had no problems with shipping (well, maybe except the prices
).

Sorry, I had one problem! >

There was this rare record (Hex from Bark Psychosis for the curious) that I was wanting to get a hold of for quite a while ago. I saw it, I bidded, I won, I paid. It costed me almost U$S 100. The cd never came... I told the guy, he told me that no prob, that he was going to ship me another one. That one didn't came either... Then I thought "hmmm, a guy named 'Dax Riner' is quite suspicious...". I concluded that he framed me.
Then (oh, lucky me!), I saw another copy selling at Ebay. I bidded, I won, I paid. This one costed me about U$S 60. The cd never came... I checked the guy's name: 'Vinolad Ur... (sounded indian)' I concluded I was a jerk.
Then... Amazon re-stocked it after years of waiting! WOW! Lucky me! I finally bought it for U$S 15... :'(

Therefore you spent $175 just for one CD.  That's a great deal!
See I am very precautious about what you just described.  That is why I limit my bids to under 50 buckaroones.  I figure that if I get a dead beat jack ass crispy cut fried chicken punk, $50 is not a ton of money...

Yeah. I had to learn that too. In the beginning, I was looking for Pandora Directive, a game I really, really wanted. This guy selling had a feedback of about 50 with 5 negs. But the price was right. Well..I figured there was a 9 out of 10 chance I won't be ripped. I hit the 1 out of 10. Check the feedback!
