Topic: Buying -- Ebay

I'm not a collector, I play them. Sure, a box is nice, but I don't want to pay 50-100 bucks extra for the box.
Imo, in many cases just a handful of sellers and buyers are responsible for driving up the price of rare games.

Marilyn Monroe Files: a boxed copy did 40-50 euro on German ebay the other day. That's not all that much, is it? I got my own unboxed but mint copy for $8.99 (Buy It Now) in the category Software -> Education & Reference -> Other.  The seller had several copies at the time and although they sold like hot cakes, she later dropped the price to $4.95.

Jack the Ripper: I got it (no box) on ebay for 20-25, don't remember. Saw someone else buy it for 2.50.

Duckman: you can buy it new in a German box for $19.95. Why pay $365 for an English box? It's exactly the same game.

That also goes for UFOs. It's called Gnap in Germany,  English game in German box for 2-6 EUR. I wish I had known that before I bought UFOs for 45 EUR.

Celtica: I paid 5 EUR for the Dutch version. There's hardly any text in this lonely game (except for the diary) and anybody who just wants to *play* it can find it.  I'll never forget the guy that sold the English Celtica NIB someplace else for $7 and then discovered ebay....

You can get Night Trap for 30 bucks. I bought an unboxed Puppet Motel for 60 dollars (and to me Laurie is worth every cent). The price of Dinotopia NIB has gone down a lot since the hype. Etcetera etcetera...

That's nice, if you're not a collector indeed.

So what's your point exactly? I don't think many people will buy Duckman for 300 bucks if they don't want to have the English box. So those people at Ebay are clearly collectors.

I consider myself to be a collector, however what counts the most is that I get an original CD-rom, preferable full boxed first-print english version, but not necessarily. Furthermore, one version of a game is enough.
At least the game itself should be fully in english, no german or you-name-it.
It nice to know which english games were published as full english games in Germany, since those games are indeed easy to get at ebay.de

Deleted UserI never buy on Ebay. I'm glad I don't have to pay $200+ just for a cardboard box.

Like I said, I was just trying to be helpful. If it isn't helpful, too bad.

first and foremost, i am a player...

but i am also a collector... on a budget...

if i want to play a game badly enough, i will settle, for the time being, with just the cd-rom...

then when i can hunt down a pristine version, and can afford it, i strike!

still gaming...

Oops, I seemed to have missed the intent of your post, then.  :-[

I can't say I'd pay those high prices for a game, just on general principal. I do collect other things though, mostly toys and statues/mini-busts, and I've been known to blow a pretty penny on those.

In the last two days I bid on and won a new Alien mini-bust from Palisades, and one of the uber-pricy full-size Terminator Endoskulls. Check 'em out:

That's me too!  If I want to try something, it has to a least have the jewel case.  If I really like it I'll watch for a complete item I can afford.  On E-bay  I have done very well in that respect.  By the same token  others have done very well by me, I keep my games intact, like new, and that is how I sell them. Not to make a killing, but to free up some Pay-Pal cash for other things I never got to try.  Now I'm really having a good time bargain hunting on E-bay. I just set up mutiple operating systems on seperate computers.  No more campatability issues,  Best of both worlds!  I didn't miss the Blue Screen of Death, I have to admit!
