I'm pretty sure the serum was used on Samuel. In that same passage you mentioned, he says that he can no longer do experiments on James and his fellow inmates because people will get suspicious. Then he makes the threat of knowing whose veins to inject it into.

That pretty much spells it out to me that he was going to use it on Samuel.

That's a very great observation, I must pay more attention to what i read (or get a better memory, not sure which).

So was it the serum that made Sam kill, and if so was he killing for Robert or did the serum make him "become" Mordred?  The plot thickens.

I think the serum was something like a truth serum, in that it makes the user more lethargic and open to suggestion. Not really mind control, but it made Samuel into a type of slave that Robert could use to perform his nefarious deeds.

I dont think Mordred was directly involved either. More like Robert knew about the curse and was using Samuel to do the dirty work and thusly bring Mordred back to life.

Still, like other have mentioned, it doesn't explain Samuel's grandfather's death, the burn marks involved, and what the cutscene moving up the tower indicated. I thought the story generally tied itself up well, but I have to admit that the developers left a couple of huge plot-holes in there.

Not available here in Australia yet so far as I can find out, however you mention the ending - I think the worst ending I've ever come across in a game was Black Dahlia!
My question is, is Black Mirror's ending as bad as that?

The topic says it all for me - I enjoyed it BUT.....Samuel's horrible voice acting, who the hell hired this guy??

The rest of the cast at least tried to sound convincing, but he just read lines...

hmm, the negative and positive answers were a waste of time, the results were the same no matter what...

btw, anyone notice Samuel looked like a cross between Udo Kier and Jeffrey Combs?...

Everyone has already remarked on the unexplained plotlines, to me, just plain plotholes, so I will cut straight to my biggest complaint - the climax was incredibly anticlimactic! I expected some kind of showdown with Mordred, some kind of huge splashy extravaganza to reward me for all my hard work!... oh, just how did Samuel get up to the top of the tower anyway??

Bottom line, it kept me involved, it looked good, it ran well ( and no bugs! ), it didn't let me progress without getting all the items I needed, and for the most part I only needed to reference a walkthrough only a couple of times when I really had no idea how to proceed. ( but that is the norm for adventure games, there seem to always be some scenes that are utterly incomprehensible..)
