GAMING'S ORIGINAL LADIES' MAN AND LOVABLE LOSER GOES TO COLLEGE IN LEISURE SUIT LARRY: MAGNA CUM LAUDE

Classic Videogame Series Returns to the PC and Makes its 3D Debut on Next-Generation Consoles in 2004

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 28, 2003) - Vivendi Universal Games announced today that the next installment in the best-selling Leisure Suit Larry(tm) franchise, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude is scheduled for release on
next-generation consoles and the PC in late 2004.

The Leisure Suit Larry videogame franchise began in 1987 with The Land of the Lounge Lizards, the first of seven games in the series.  Since then, the Leisure Suit Larry games have sold millions of units worldwide and its games are considered collector items.

"For years, gamers worldwide have begged us to create another Leisure Suit Larry game, so it gives me great pleasure to finally reveal the new installment in the series," said Luc Vanhal, VU Games' North American
President & COO. "Thanks to the hard work of the game's designers at VU Games and High Voltage Software, Magna Cum Laude will build upon the
popularity of the PC franchise and extend the Leisure Suit Larry experience to console gamers."

"Inspired by films like American Pie and There's Something About Mary, the game is packed full of outrageous humor and raucous game-play," said Philip
O'Neil, SVP Sales & Marketing, Vivendi Universal  Games.  "We have captured the distinctive style and feel of the original series, while taking the humor and visuals to a level that hasn't been seen before. With all these ingredients combined we are sure it will please old and new fans alike."

Developed by High Voltage Software, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude is the coming of age story about Larry Lovage, nephew of Larry Laffer, the
series' original lovable loser. In Magna Cum Laude, Lovage starts as a pathetic loser enrolled at Community College who spends most of his time in his dorm room, or on campus striking out with women.  After hearing about a reality TV dating show visiting his college campus, he resolves to revitalize his life and win.  Over the course of the game, Larry sets out on an epic search for love (or its equivalent) and finds that things don't always go as planned.

"Our team has been having a lot of fun bringing Leisure Suit Larry back - meeting the high expectations associated with this license is an exciting challenge," said Josh VanVeld, Producer, High Voltage Software, Inc. "We're confident that Larry will make a huge splash when he comes to consoles and the PC next Fall."

LSL- The Next Generation

No Al Lowe now No Larry

Made by the same people that made Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance.

They also seem to have another adventure game based on Disney's The Haunted Mansion under development. They describe as a single player puzzle adventure but the trailer is very arcady.

Still holding faint hope that this will be OK. Will withhold my judgement until more details come out.

Deleted UserHey all, first time posting so just a quick "Hi" to all!

Anyway, it just wouldn't feel right having Larry Laffer with no Al Lowe so I guess this could be a good thing.

Hopefully they get this one right and don't screw up the LSL name.

Larry's NEPHEW? Sounds like an april's fool's joke to me, if only this weren't october...

But indeed, the fact that it will be set in College, with a young Nephew, and inspired by hit Teen comedies like American Pie, and it will be in 3D, all leads me to think  that easy to write, unfunny, gross-out sex humor is probably going to make most of this game, and this is the kind of humor I can rarely stand as it is disgusting, boring, predictable, and really not funny.

The fact that it's going to be set in college only makes this fact more obvious.

And not the real Larry, either. Why bother with this game at all then?

it's a shame really... those ppl have absolutely no right to bear the sierra name, or anything that has to do with the company's glorious past >
i really hope it sells less that 5 copies... >

Regardless of whether it will be a good game or not, what I don't understand is why they are even calling it LSL.  Sierra feels that the adventure game market is not big enough to warrent making new adventure games.  But the only ones that would be drawn to a new LSL game based on name alone would be people who played the previous games and enjoyed them.  Console and PC gamers who've never heard of Larry aren't going to care whether it's an LSL game or a completely new universe.  Just whether the game is good or not.  So this move makes no sense to me.

Holy jebus, they really want this game to be bad, don't they?  And I still had hope the game was going to be good, until now.

Hot Spot: Here I come!

All right, let's break this baby down:

Classic Videogame Series Returns to the PC and Makes its 3D Debut on Next-Generation Consoles in 2004

Next Generation Consoles. There's those three words again. No PC release? Well, sorry then guys. You lost me already. Not that I dislike consoles. I'm just not interested in buying one at this time. Not a good start...

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 28, 2003) - Vivendi Universal Games announced today that the next installment in the best-selling Leisure Suit Larry(tm) franchise, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude is scheduled for release on next-generation consoles and the PC in late 2004.

First of all, I don't get the title. Sounds like a cheap porn movie. Kind of revolting actually. The Larry games aren't about scoring with women, as these people seem to think. They attracted people because of the sex, but it was first and foremost about humor and the joke was on Larry. Oh well, they really don't give away anything about the gameplay, so I guess I should wait with the comments on that.

The Leisure Suit Larry videogame franchise began in 1987 with The Land of the Lounge Lizards, the first of seven games in the series.  Since then, the Leisure Suit Larry games have sold millions of units worldwide and its games are considered collector items.

Seven games in the series? Do they count LSL's Casino as the seventh? Sorry if I'm sarcastic, but I bet the guy who wrote this doesn't even know there is no LSL4. :

And the fact that these games are considered collector items is mostly because Sierra/VU has blatantly ignored to make enough copies of the Ultimate Pleasure Pack despite the crazy prices on eBay.

"For years, gamers worldwide have begged us to create another Leisure Suit Larry game, so it gives me great pleasure to finally reveal the new installment in the series," said Luc Vanhal, VU Games' North American President & COO.

Let me suggest an alternate version of that quote:

"For years, adventure gamers worldwide have begged us to create another Leisure Suit Larry game, which we couldn't have cared less about since no one cares about those weird adventure gamers anymore, so it gives me great pleasure to finally reveal a new installment in the series that is exactly what they didn't want, said Sludge Vohaul, VU Games' North American President & Intergalactic arch-villain."

"Thanks to the hard work of the game's designers at VU Games and High Voltage Software, Magna Cum Laude will build upon the popularity of the PC franchise and extend the Leisure Suit Larry experience to console gamers."

Hmm... They said extend. So maybe that means a PC release after all...

So they are sure are they? Taking Al Lowe's humor and adding stuff "inspired by films like American Pie and There's Something about Mary" is a level that hasn't been seen before? Sorry, but judging from all other things reportedly inspired by those movies that I have seen, this new level of theirs surely must be far below what the series had in the past. :

Gaah! What are they thinking?!
Larry's nephew? I'm getting Mask of Eternity flashbacks already. Ok, I guess this is good in a way since it means they probably won't violate Al's original character. Also, while the original series was deliberately aimed at adults, this college theme clearly suggest that this is going to be a game for teens with teen humor. The dating TV show sounds like LSL2 reused, but it probably won't be. In fact, without more story and gameplay details revealed it's too early to say anything. Let's just say this: My expectations aren't exactly high...

Yeah, a huge splash down the drain if this is what it seems to be.
I could be proven wrong, but it seems they have done just about everything possible the wrong way. The only bright spot may be that they will re-release the old games as a marketing stunt for this one.

Oh, they finally said it was coming out on PC after all. So I am a potential buyer then. But if they want my money they are going to have a tough time convincing me in the months to come. This press release certainly didn't help... :'(

Anyway, there is a video too! I just checked it out. You should watch it as well, as it reveals parts of how the game looks and how it will play. Here it is:

http://www.sierra.com/file_list.do?gamePlatformId=607

To me it just looks like Zelda with sperms. Seems it's mainly about running around trying to score with dumb, booby women and drinking beer. The Larry series was never sexist, as the women always turned out to be smarter than Larry himself. But this game seems to be quite the opposite.

Sorry, I got to go somewhere and puke.

I'm currently looking at the movie. That new Larry really reminds me of Jimmy Neutron...

Ok...while the movie's loading...
The pictures seems to show a VERY simple interface for the game, but seems like there might be some fun puzzles in it, like making really good home made beer, like it seems from the picture.
Although...I may be wrong and the entire game is about minigames? All the sperm and beer icons are confusing.

Ick, seems like a teen movie turned into a game. And worse, looks like direct control and not point and click. Those icons are a bad sign I tell you. A game that needs icons for beer level and sperm level is not what I call a game that requires much thinking.

And that kid is badly animated.

The music was fun though...cute Larry remix.

I was really trying to be indifferent on the subject of a new Larry. Without Al is a real shame but they could have made something of it....

Well, just downloaded the 10MB teaser movie, just how good could it be? My mouth fell open when it looked a bit 'twee', then when it showed the little runt running SuperMario style on a school pathway, my heart sank
bad bad bad bad bad. I half expected to see a few powerups floating around ready for him to jump up and grab them..

Sierra did say that they were *not* going to make an adventure game, especially one that would fit in with the expectations of previous customers (not an exact quote) and I guess it looks like they were indeed spot on with that assesment!

On the information thus far released, it's a little early to say whether it'll be complete pants but the press release and teaser trailer don't exactly inspire confidence. Good luck Sierra - I think you may well need it!

If I had to guess, I would say this game will be reminiscent of Conker's Bad Fur Day, a cartoony adult platformer from the deaththrows of the Nintendo 64. I never played it personally, but from what I understand, there were some vaguely "adventure" elements, like an inventory, and the fact that Conker did many things automatically when correctly prompted. But it was still a platformer. A platformer whose highlight was apparent fighting a giant poop monster. (a la Dogma) If you find giant poop monsters hilarious, then CBFD is right up your alley. Unfortunatly, it appears that Sierra decided they had to get in on some of that moderately-successful-for-a-dying-system action. Notice also that it is classified as a "videogame series" not "adventure series". That bodes real well, since the average person probably thinks Mario, Pac-Man or something equivelant when they hear video game.
I've never been a big LSL fan, but I feel the pain of those who are. I watched SQ7 die a slow death from a multiplayer FPS component.  Now we should all pray for S&M2.

I just watched the clip. Isn't that the main dude from the 1982 movie Porky's?

I don't really see a problem with the game itself. It just doesn't look to be a game that has anything to do with past LSL adventures. I expected 3D graphics and direct control but not a mischievous college kid. No wonder why Al Lowe was never contacted.

Wow, you guys set a new record for being negative!

Even Full Throtlle 2 wasn't burned down this heavily, I think.

I guess we should stop comparing this game to the LSL series and start looking at it as a game on its own. Personally I expected worse. After seeing the trailer I even thought it wouldn't be that bad at all. The only thing that worries me is it's console-like gameplay.

What I wish is that Sierra should have done this too. Seems like this game came out of someone's idea for a brainless teen game, and then some guy recalled that there was a series of game called Leisure Suit Larry that also had sex in it. So they figured they'd use that licence to get some extra sales. I cannot stress enough how bad an idea this is. They should have let Larry rest in peace and made an original game instead. This is just like when Hollywood comes up with the bad idea to make movies like "Scary Movie" to make a parody on a parody. Or you can compare it to the recent Simpsons episodes, which mostly jokes about the format of the series itself instead of using the sharp satire of popular culture that made the series fun to watch in the first place. It's saddening when such good ideas are bastardized by people without the skill to come up with good new ones instead. With LucasArts at least there's still hope, but Sierra doesn't seem to be content by ignoring its adventure game legacy but also needs to insult the fans of it with this kind of crap.

Who's up for a major boycott/protest list?
This is a chance for us to speak up and tell people in the business that what they wrote about Larry fans in the press release is generally far from the truth.

And let's meet on the parking lot outside VU's headquarters tonight. Don't forget to bring your torches and pitchforks! Baseball bats will be handed out freely.

Sorry, but while Sierra's business history since 1997 just makes me sad, this press release actually makes me angry. >
