After I watched Ripley's game, I watched Animatrix tonight for the second time (it was a relax/take it easy day for me). When you do watch Animatrix, you cannot but wonder how was Matrix 2 bad. The storyline of (especially the first) episodes of Animatrix is amazing.

I loved both parts of 'Second Reinnaisance' (I'll never learn how to spell that word). And the graphics are great as well. Anybody else watched it? Opinions?

Do you people know of anything else similar to Animatrix? Something in Anime or Manga? But not like Spirited away. I didn't like that one. The graphics were too weird. I think I didn't like the balloon-faces of people. Face design is something that's really important to me (maybe that's why I didn't enjoy Grim Fandango either). So any suggestions?

Download the Pearl Jam video "
o the Evolution."  It has some weird similarities, and may be the same artist(s) at work.

Try "Ghost in the Shell" as the matrix is more or less a rip-off /inspired by :-/ this anime.

Hey I saw some pictures on the net of that 'Ghost in the shell' and it looked nice. I'll give it a go. Any other examples? It doesn't have to be anymatrix-like in story, but in graphics.

Deleted UserGhost In The Shell is great, Metropolis is good (although it's based on Osamu Tezukas old manga and looks decidedly retro), Akira (of course), Blood The Last Vampire (although that's a bit abrupt at the end), Vampire Hunter D; Bloodlust (very baroque), the upcoming Appleseed movie, and of course all the inspirations behind the Animatrix itself (they're on the DVD)... there's literally tons of stuff to get into.

I'd recommend more by the director of Spirited Away... but you don't like his style. Still, it may be worth checking out Princess Mononoke. It's not the same as Animatrix, but it has a vast storyline, some violence, a good love story and some amazing sights to see. The intro alone is worth the rental.

Deleted UserI will second that suggestion by MonkeyDude (the guy who made me a Studio Ghibli junkie, curse him)!
I watched Princess Mononoke just a few days ago and it was really cool. More Conan the Barbarian than Matrix, but I know that's fine with you anyway.

If you want to check out more beautiful anime, although not necessarily with gritty futuristic stories or fantasy, you MUST watch Porco Rosso and Kiki's Delivery Service as well! Next to Princess Mononoke, these were my absolute favorites in the Ghibli catalogue. Also watch Grave of the Fireflies if you want a really, really sad WW2 movie with gorgeous artwork.

Yesterday I borrowed two animated japanese TV series from a friend: Cowboy Bebop and Hellsing, which I heard are great. I'll let you know of my thoughts once I've watched some of it. Yesterday I was also shown the horror of all horrors, in a comical way: The pilot episode of the new, live-action version of Sailor Moon! Yes, that's right, they're doing it with real actors! And let me tell you... The bar for taste in Japanese popular culture just got lowered another notch.

MonkeyPerson knows what he's talking about

I really loved another two not so well known Miyazaki movies, Castle in the Sky and Castle of Cagliostro (two castles, I never noticed before!). Both are a mix of action/comedy/romance in typical Asian style. The former also has very beautiful music.

Deleted UserThanks peeps!

I forgot to mention - if you want really deep, meaningful sci-fi animé with a really grim ending, then Jin-Roh the Wolf Brigade by the same guys as Ghost In The Shell is also worth hunting down. No CG, all hand-drawn. Go seek!

Deleted UserAh, I watched Laputa: Castle in the Sky very recently too! I liked it, but it didn't do the same for me as some of the others. I have to look up the other. Besides, there is another Miyazaki movie about a castle currently scheduled for release in 2004: Howl's Moving Castle.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347149/

He really must love castles.
Actually, if there are two returning themes in his movies, it's castles and flying. Most (all?) of his movies have these elements in it, and depicts them with great affection.

And yesterday I watched the first episode of Hellsing. A fiendishly cool and stylish vampire series with amazing art and music. Something you would dream to have transferred into a live action version.

Interesting in "serious" anime?

Then You HAVE to see the named "best anime" ever

"Neon Genesis Evangelion"

It's a 27 episode series...and 1 movie that re-sais in a far better way the last 2 episodes(better see both to get the true meaning).

Truly a masterpiece

Warning : Most of the viewers had serious headaches after seeing this anime...(complex
)

I loved that gory version of Little Red Riding Hood!
BTW Jin-Roh is the only anime movie I've seen where Japanese people actually look like Japanese
