Harriet, action/adventure just may not be for you. BUT if you are willing to give them a try, may I recommend Deus Ex and No One Lives Forever (1 and 2)?

These games reward stealth, which requires the same skills as shooting, really: a quick eye and fast fingers. Oh, and an ear wide open doesn't hurt either.

If you are patient, though, I think the story lines, graphics, and music in these games will enthrall you.

Deus Ex, as mentioned in an earlier posting by someone also recommending it, has an extremely deep, intricate, and somewhat dark story line (and 4 possible endings, for heaven's sakes!). It is set in the near future and has some science fiction themes, but there is tons of interaction with everyday people and also tons to figure out plotwise. I was immersed in it for months (only get to play on weekends, don't you know?)....

NOLF 1 and 2 will leave you breathless and laughing your head off. Some of the funniest stuff I have seen in a game can be found here. The music is stylish and appropriate to the overall 1960's spy theme and the graphics (particularly in 2) are wonderful. The spirit of these games is light, with the occasional tense mission thrown in just to keep some spy credibility, I imagine! There is plenty of action, but if you ask me, I can (dare I say it?) tell you how to cheat a bit to make it easier....not every player is a dead-eye draw, after all.

Anyway, you might test your action appetite with these tasty treats. Do let us know which of the many menu items offered in this thread you decide to sample, ok?

Deleted UserI never have trouble making decisions but selecting an action adventure game that I want to play is a painful exception.  Each time that I think I have decided I read a little more and change my mind.  Talk about conflict. :-/

I am leaning toward either Thief 1 or No One Lives Forever 1.  Since they are inexpensivge now (relatively) I may order both of them.

Speak now if you think these are a huge mistake.  Otherwise, I will have a date with Amazon.com tomorrow.

Having not played No One Lives Forever (yet) I can't comment on it, but from all I've heard I would like to try it myself.  But regarding Thief, if you're wondering about getting 1 or 2, there are some differences you might want to know about.

Thief 1 has lots of zombies, undead, weird creatures in much (but not all) of it.  Thief 2 doesn't, it's more down to earth in that sense and is actually more like what I originally expected Thief 1 to be like.  Thief 2 is much better graphics-wise since it came out later.  Gameplay, though, is remarkably similar between the two.  They got it right the first time and didn't mess with it with the second one.  I'm generally not a fan of the undead and creepy games, but after playing Thief 1, I actually missed them in 2.  The levels on Thief 2 are much longer so it takes more time, but both of them have lots of replay value - so much in fact that because of this thread I started playing Thief 1 again this weekend and dreamt I was sneaking through Cragscleft prison last night.  I'm not sure if I could choose between the two, they're both very good but feel different overall.
Or go fishing. - MI2 &&Okay.   - Me

NOLF 1 has one very hard part involving a laser-mined tunnel. You have to jump a lot. Otherwise, if you want a taste of action/adventure, this just might be the right mix for you. Since it is inexpensive, perhaps if you do not really like it you won't feel TOO bad. I think it is worth a shot. Just don't remember I recommended it if you really hate it, ok!?

Yeah, there are a few annoying spots here and there in NOLF 1, but they end pretty quickly.  Plus you need to play the 1st game to enjoy the 2nd game to it's fullest.
NO SOUP FOR YOU!
