All you hear before that happens is the little girl and Max's wife screaming before thery are shot to death. Too disturbing. Too violent.

The graphics are fantastic, but you're computer needs to be up to spec.. The music - I loved. The overall story and gameplay is excellent. You'll really get into this game. It is very short though, but can be replayed on more difficult modes and a special timed mode (not keen myself). All in all if you think it's your bag you'll be very, very pleased you bought it. Pity there seems to be a major hold-up with the sequel ! Enjoy !!

The way Max delivers his often cheesy dialogue in that flat monotone voice was just so right for the game. And don't get me started on just how cool Bullet time was. I'll probably go see the movie, if it ever comes out, and I'll certainly buy any sequels.
Some people are like a slinky. They might not be good for anything, but its fun to watch them tumble down stairs. &&

People at work thought I was an oddball to play action games just for the graphics and scenery after disabling the fighting with cheats or other method.
So in Max Payne demo yeah I had to fight since I couldn't find cheats at the time. But I put up with the shooting once per level to get rid of the baddies. And fortunately all their bodies disappeared so I could roam around in exploration mode with no more fighting in a savegame.
So I'll get an action game to explore around, once the shooting is eliminated, and if the graphics are great and maybe to enjoy some storyline. I don't want to be influenced by the violence, but also because the shooting is just so dang annoying when you're trying to wander around checking out the buildings and countryside. So the shooting is a hindrance to having fun in a game, besides being disturbing.
I admit there is fighting (stabbing and crossbow violence) in Atlantis The Lost Tales and in some other real adventure games. But I can simply enter the part of those levels where there are no fighting cutscenes, like I do in action games.
Anyway on to Max Payne graphics, there are some darn nice looking objects such as the tvs and chairs and other things in the rooms, and the ceramic tiles and such. But they are repeated way too much in levels in the demo. It needs some more variety in types of chairs and things. Those are great looking shiny leather cushions on the chairs, you can't beat that for realism. But come on, seeing the same chairs and others 100 times in the demo is boring. So I didn't get the full game. If someone tells me there is much more variety in the detail and objects in the full version them I'll go out and pick it up.

Anyway, the whole game brings you LOTS of great and diverse environments. The final showdown in a huge business scyscraper 'a la Matrix stands out on itself. I also fondly remember a big mansion in the middle of the game. And the bizarre nightmare sequences cannot be described, they have to be played!
This game is a great example of rich storylines entering other genres than adventure games. I've never cared for mindless action shooters like Quake, (although I admire the technology behind it) but even the FPS genre, that's often pointed out as the "adversary" of adventure games, requires storylines these days. I find games like No One Lives Forever and Max Payne to be highly enjoyable. The action can be fun too, but I usually turn it down to the easiest setting to avoid getting stuck. I'm in it more for the environments and the storyline.
I agree that Max Payne was too short though. I had expected more and was a little disappointed in the end. I also think the level design was a bit too linear. There was almost never multiple "paths" through a level, and it just reduced the sense of realism that the graphics did such a great job at creating that you always found only one door to be unlocked, only one stairway available and things like that. This is a great problem with 3D levels that I've seen few successful approaches to. I wish more 3D shooters were designed like Half-Life, with the entire game being designed like one big level.
The game manual mentions a movie being based on this game, but nothing shows up on IMDB which makes me wonder. I wouldn't be surprised if they were a little too enthusiastic when writing that. Hollywood is keen on finding new stories, but when it comes down to bringing out the money and start production, only a few scripts get through.

Yes, the game could have been longer but the action, the pacing, the incredible atmosphere and gritty story are well worth the price of admission. Too truly appreciate the work that went into this title, try to finish it first, then find the "unlimited bulletime" cheat available everywhere on the web and put it to use in the game.

In this mode you have one minute to finish each level - but you'll get extra time (I forget how much) for each baddie you kill. It sounds impossible but isn't (been there, done that), there are just one or two critical moments.
The "Bullet Time" feature is very much reminiscent of the movie Matrix which obviously inspired the Max Payne creators.
Also if you've seen 3D Mark 2001, you've seen Max Payne - several 3DMark tests are based on Max Payne (same people developed both).
I forgot my sig.
