I recently found out that my favorite computer store now has several classic Lucas Arts games for sale. However, the price for them is rather high and I don't want to buy a game I will regret buying.

"The dig" was the one game that I might like to buy even though it's a little pricey (about 25$), and wanted to know if I'll like it. I usually like third person games (I think this game is, right?) with inventory based puzzles, good writing and character interaction. I don't like facing dead ends or having my character killed every five minutes, but since this is Lucas Arts, I don't think I'll have that problem.
So, should I get this game?

(I'm not going to trust their on-line store and order it from there, the price for Discworld Noir actually went UP since the last time I was there, I'll check with the actual store to make sure though).

In a few words...yes, that's definitely a game for you. You can also read a review-tribute of the game and an interview with the artist designer behind it, Bill Tiller, in The Inventory 4.

I really like The Dig. It`s 3rd person and you can`t die.

the story is good and the voice acting is great.
The puzzles are not that hard though. The game is pretty short.
I would buy it

Thanks for the advice, I'll go buy it (I hope they'll still have some copies left...).

I'll update with my opinion on the game then, and tell you if I like it.

A really good adventure from what I remembered of it! 25$ sounds like a rip off tho... have you searched around the web (eBay and the like)?

Wasn't even Steven Spielberg somehow involved, as a producer or supervising ... guy (whatever that's called) or something...
The game is really great, just like an interactive movie!!!

I've had problems getting the sound to work on mine but I was told you can get a lil program to run it off. It's a cool game though and I've been playing it without any sound it's that good.

Spielberg originally wrote The Dig as a feature film. After that fell through, years later he turned it over to Lucas because he expressed interest in making a game out of it.

The funny thing is, years after that, the story did make it to the big screen in a roundabout way. The movie "
eep Impact" is Spielberg's second draft of the story that used to be The Dig. He took out all the alien stuff and just kept the asteroid stuff, mostly for budget reasons.

$25 seems a little expensive for just "The Dig". If you can still find it, look for Lucasarts Archive Vol. III. It has the Dig, Dark Forces, Full Throttle, Monkey Island 1 and 2, and Afterlife. I bought mine a few years ago for around $15.

Deleted Usertry e-bay. 25 bucks definitively is too much for such an old game.

Ebay is great, but not is you live in say, the Netherlands. $15 is how much shipping alone would cost me, if I want it boxed and from the US. Fact is that most games are being sold from the US and UK. The Dutch Ebay has a VERY small amount of games for sale.

I'm glad this game came up as it's reminded me that it is as yet unplayed although I bought it 2 yrs ago off ebay. I also had a problem with the sound i.e. none at all.  Where can i find this little program to help?

Actually The Dig is from 1996... so 7 years old, not that old.

Dude why don't you buy the Entertainment Pack that LucasArts released a time ago?

It features Full Throttle - Sam 'n Max - The Dig and Grim Fandango all in revised versions to work on XP.

btw the price tag for this pack is 50€.

I always thought that "The Dig" was one of the more underrated games that Lucas Arts ever created.

It never quite reached the heights of Sam and Max or Grim Fandango.

Probably because it was a serious story and not a comedy like the rest.

Personally I loved it

Well the store DOES have the lucas arts entertainment pack... for about 70$ . But I own Grim Fandango, played Sam and Max and didn't like it and don't really want to pay so much for Full Throttle. Basically 'The Dig' was the only one there that seemed worth buying.
The accurate price in dollars is 22.5$ as I am not paying in dollars. So indeed if I wanted it from ebay I'll have to pay for shipping which will make it more expensive.
I'll think about it, I always buy things without looking at the price a secod time.

I'll have to go to the store and check the prices...they might be a little different (or I might be saved all the trouble if they're out of copies
)
