Status : Online | Are you and your friends broadband users, and if so do any of you have a firewall (home gateway, router, or firewall software like ZoneAlarm)?
Also, if any of you are running Windows XP, you might have the built-in firewall enabled on your Internet connection, which would prevent most types of incoming traffic from getting in to your host PC (most likely to be a problem on the host).
There are also network address translation issues if anyone involved has a home gateway.
Is it possible the person whose game you could get on had a direct, unfiltered connection and you didn't when you were hosting?

Status : Online | Kill, I think you're close to the answer...
We have both broadband connection. As for the game we succeed to play in, I have no idea if it was an unfiltered connection since we pick it at random (we don't know the host).
I have a firewall (ZoneAlarm) and my friend has a router. Do we absolutely have to remove them to play ? I'd prefer not since I'm always under "attack" but if it's what it takes...
Thanks a lot for your help.

If you are patched up, Windows wise, you'll be relatively safe until your game's over. Also, it's more important to do this on the host side than on the other player's side (because of the incoming connections), so first try it with only you making changes.
Also, check in your Network Connections folder that your Internet connection is not "firewalled".
