After 5 years and 3 moves, I just found my box of old Sierra adventure, including Freddie Pharkas.  I set on installing it right away (natch, from 5 1/4s no less
) and after 6 discs went in without incident, I learned that the 7th and final disc had corrupted  :'(.  That hurt.

Anyway, my question.  Were someone to share a copy of that 7th disc with me, would it be illegal?

The whole disc is only 1.44mg so it could be e-mailed in seconds, thus curing my heartache.

You mean you're not running the CD version :

The rights to Freddy Pharkas have apperently dropped back to Al.Lowe (as Sierra no longer marketed the game...) and by all accounts he's willing to let people download the game (in preference to the game not being played).

Check out http://www.freddypharkas.com/ where you'll find d/l links for the CD image. I got the game on a CD-R from Drew (the guy who runs the site) before I eventually got an original from eBay. They don't come up on eBay that often and consequently the price can go quite high.

I never even knew there WAS a cd-version.   :-[ :-[  That corrupted disc may be the best thing that could have happened.

No they haven't. While $ierra/Vivendi Universal may not be markting any adventure games anymore, they still have the rights. Rights don't belong to people, they belong to companies, and Al Lowe is not the name of a company, that was and still is, Sierra.
But, since it's not sold anymore, Al no longer gets any revenue (royalties and such, as its creator), so he doesn't care what happens. I don't think he has the game on his site though.
Me have completely legal CD-version (with royalties to Al
).

Copyrights belong to creators - usually publishers in case of games. In case of books, typically authors. Can be sold or transferred.

As for Freddy Pharkas - the game can be downloaded at freddypharkas.com, which allowe.com links to. Here's a quote from freddypharkas.com:

"That said, what I'm about to do here may not even be piracy. According to Al Lowe himself, the rights to the game reverted back to him after Sierra stopped selling it, which happened several years ago. And since he has stated that he'd rather people play the game than have it disappear, this is pretty much the only way to go."

Secondhand information, but still...
I forgot my sig.

Okay, I'll be getting firsthand information then, from Al himself....
However, since the rights of KQ have not reverted back to Roberta Williams, and the rights of LSL have not reverted back to Al, and the rights of SQ have not reverted back to its creators, why would the rights of Freddy Pharkas be transferred/reverted back to Al? That doesn't make any sense.

Why not? Maybe Al Lowe had a different agreement with Sierra? I don't see anything impossible about it. Unusual, maybe, but certainly possible.

Nothing is impossible, and never say never (again). However, I see no reason for Sierra and Al to make a seperate agreement just for Freddy Pharkas. Anyway, e-mail's on his way, and I've asked him to reply in this thread, so if he does as I've asked we should see his reply in the next 24 hours.

Some of my older contracts allowed the rights to revert back to me but the newer contracts didn't. (The comment about "rights only going to companies" is just plain wrong.)

Freddy is somewhere in the middle. I found my final contract with Sierra and I definitely get nothing back. But Freddy was written before that contract. Since I can't find the Freddy contract, I'll let Sierra's legal department decide. And since they obviously could not care less, I say, "Play the game and laugh all you can!"

Everyone becomes a lawyer in the space of a couple of hours...

Al has a donate button on his webby if you feel he lost out on royalties due to this (or any other download for that matter). It's a gray area and yes Sierra could ask Drew to stop hosting the game but as Al says, why not play it while you can 'cause it's a rare site on eBay I can tell ya!

Nice of Al to drop by

He certainly didn't lose out on royalities because of me, but, I won't stop anyone else from donating.

and
Al Lowe posted on my thread!

He only did so because I asked him to. Remember that, you two.

I just wanted to make sure they won't expect to see Al Lowe posting in any thread again soon, and he wouldn't have posted in this one either if I hadn't asked him.

One of the 'they' was me and I didn't expect Al to turn up or indeed expect further appearances. It's obvious that he keeps out of it (and always did I think!). Some people thrive on internet presence, whilst others do not - just look at some of board's users post counts
