I loved the base10/base8/base16 puzzles in Rama, my friend thought they were too hard, the numbers got too big at the end, and they should've given you more time to solve them. I was disappointed they left out multiplication and division!

If you wanna penalize people for doing so with a point deduction, that's fine, but I don't think there's anything as negative as Fickfack says about giving the user the option.
Pandora Directive probably had the best in-game hint system I've seen. Phantasmagoria had one too, but it a way easier game overall so it wasn't as necessary.

That would be true if puzzle difficulty was absolute. Except it's not! Games which some people consider easy can be judged as difficult by others. Maybe you're one of the geniuses who never need hints. I'm not. Even if I was, I wouldn't try to impose my standards on others, it won't work anyway I'm certainly not one of the geniuses that never need hints. My point was that a good puzzle shouldn't require you to use a walkthrough at all. The tendency is that if you have access to in-game hints you get lazy. I've found that having access to them somewhat spoiled Byzantine for me because any time I couldn't figure out what was going on, I immediately went to the hint system. If you don't even need to quit the game to get an automatic hint, it just encourages you not to bother.

Sir Dave, absolutely wonderful post, was very happy to read it, this is exactly how I feel. I get completely lost in the worlds of Myst, and am in reality a very easily bored or distracted person. Need to feel stimulated, even though it's in a laid back environment. Having to talk to people in games usually grows a bit tiresome to me, since I can't become introvert then, I have to be extrovert which is less relaxing to me in the long run.
Thanks, it has been a great read!

On that topic, I don't much care for Myst. But that's because it just flat-out wasn't my kind of game. It played more like a large playground full of puzzles, to me at least. Because of that, I've not played Riven or Exile.

Hmmm. I feel better already! However, on another subject: You've got to wonder about those Sirrus & Achenar guys- torture chambers, self-esteem issues &/or delusions of grandeur, problems with Daddy- all sorts of Freudian possibilities there!

It runs in the dysfunctional family, doesn't it. Daddy had quite a few problems of his own with Granddaddy.

You're right, Grand-Dad was a piece of work- looks like his psychosis jumped a generation. Maybe there's a warning there: beware of creating life by writing in books; you may start thinking you're some sort of God or something.....

Yes, there was definitely something very weird going on with those two.

I totally agree with that one.
I have played Myst and must say that I didn't like the way the story was told, though I did like the puzzles and immersion into the gaming world. I just felt too detached from the plot. I haven't played Riven yet and only a part of Exile, so I don't know whether I would like them better. there are a bunch of Myst-like (just to avoid the word clone ) games that I like more than Myst itself, like Rama and Lighthouse. The difference is immediately clear: those games featured stories where you, the player, were part of the story all the time, it wasn't something that had already happened. Just my two cents.

masturbatory? Sounds more like a noun than an adjective. Like you do labwork in a laboratory and then..whatever..in a masturbatory. :

mszv- I just assumed that a bright guy like you would immediately appreciate the connection between Myst, Riven, & Clone plots and the need to impregnate Jersey heffers! :
