Well, here I am. In Japan, writing this little tale of luck while I download the demo of Post-Mortem, which only takes about 40 minutes (even on ADSL), oh well.

Some might remember my tragic impulsive decision to buy Druuna (a game that is well, how to put it, dreadfully bad). Well, to ease the pain, and despite having some unplayed games (just not in the mood for the mindbenders of Obsidian and Schizm that are wating for me at the moment), I could think of nothing else but to buy more games.

I just happened to wander into my local PC game store with its healthy if all-too-shoother-centric selection of games (and since I'm in Japan more RPGs than you can wave a wand at), and what should I happen to find but a copy of none other than Grim Fandango. I'd never played it before. But well, it dripped of atmosphere and of course mine it had to be. I think it was glowing and as I touched the box I thought I could hear a folding scythe opening up somewhere....

Wow. I'm about half way through now. What a gem. I can't believe I missed out on this gaming perfection for so long. Truly wonderful. I'm savoring every moment like a fine wine. This is why I love adventure games.

And being in a spending mood after payday I decided to see what other yummies I could chance upon. Well, I found a used copy of Atlantis II along with a shiny, hot off the presses copy of The Cameron Files: Pharaoh's Curse. I also had to pick up Loch Ness and Nocturne. Ahh, I'm set.

For now anyway. It seems like there will always be more goodness out there to behold. On my wish list are Dark Fall and of course Post-Mortem.

Alright, since this is getting out of hand, I really do have question for everyone. I'm wondering about the Gabriel Knight series. I have a new computer with Windows XP and I wonder if it's even worth trying to run the first one on it. It came out in 1993 right? Will it even work? Reading all about the GK series has me positively drooling. The search is on--well, after I play a few of my new games.
From reviews it seems like #2 is the best one, but they all seem ultra top-notch and ever so desirable.

Any comments on running the series on new machines?

Well, download's almost done. Happy adventuring all.

Cheers, Omnia
[edit] Seems I found the answer in another thread. Target Media Distribution - http://www.target.zenwebhosting.com/acatalog/index.html .  Most excellent. I wonder how long they'll have copies. Ahh, more shopping. Wheee. Ciao.

Hei Omnia,

I'm not sure about GK1, but GK2 which is the best of the series as you thought, runs perfectly on windows 2000. All you have to do is set your screen resolution to 640x480 and 256 colours and then it runs perfectly. I guess it should run flawlessly in Windows XP also.

You should definitely not miss the second, we're talking about story of grandiose porportions here. I haven't seen such a story not even in books or movies. Actually sometimes I wish I have never played it so that I could re-live the experience of playing it for the first time. Re-playing it for the fourth time is also cool, but it is nothing like the first time.

I prefer GK1 to GK2, but it definately could have problems on your system. One of my computers has XP on it so if you'd like I can try it for you..

Hey,

Was Grim in the box?  If true, that's great.  If not, that's geat, too.

This is my luck with GK series.  I got GK2 to run in XP very well.  I can't get GK1 or GK3 to run it though.  I can't even install GK3 and GK1 has a sound related error that VDMSound doesn't fix...

My solution was to install into 98SE (I dualboot) and GK1 works well and I haven't retried GK3.

I downloaded and successfully played GKIII DEMO on my windows XP new computer with no problems.  I'd even buy the game if I could find it.  The character animations are very well done, especially for 1999.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Looks like the hunt for all three is quite worth it. I've been thinking about doing the dual boot thing. I have plenty of space for that sort of thing and could make things go much smoother.

Laura, if you could give it a try on your XP machine that would be great, but it looks like there are other work-arounds too.

BTW, I just finished Grim Fandango. Ahh, what a sublime gaming experience. Had some tough moments puzzlewize though, but they were fair. I'm so weak when it comes to games and the ever-present UHS. Sometimes I feel like gnawing on the puzzle, but when the story is begging to advance, I just can't help myself. Anyway, definitely a winner for me. Though I can see that not everyone would fall in love with the game.

Well, the hunt is on! In the meantime, let's see, finish The Watchmaker or move on to Loch Ness or Pharaoh's Curse. Ahh, decisions, decisions.

BTW2, that Post-Mortem demo was nice and creepy. Can't wait for that one.

Do whatever you can to try to play GK1, I think its by far the absoloute best of the series.

Deleted UserJust a little tip if you're going to play GK: Use a slowdown program, such as Turbo, together with it. Many Sierra games from this era suffers from speed-related problems. GK1 isn't by far the worst, but in order to reduce the risks of game crashes and lockups you should try to slow down your computer as much as possible. Actually, slow it down as much as possible without getting a crippled gameplay.
