If action-adventures count then
Alone in the Dark 1 Resident Evil 2 Realms of the Haunting
would all be contenders

I highly recommend Sanitarium. It's not an extremely difficult game, but the creepy graphics design and surreal story kept me playing (even with a recurrent, annoying lockup bug) so I could figure out what in the world was going on!

1. Parasite Eve series 2. Silent Hill series 3. Resident Evil series 4. Alice (more of an action game though) 5. Koudelka (hated the battle system but loved the game)
When it comes to advs it's impossible for me to answer!!! i've been working on such a list for ages but there are so many excellent advs i played, i cannot create a top list no matter what
You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

I was terrified of the puzzles before I started playing, but then I just got sucked in and didn't mind the difficulty at all. They didn't even seem like puzzles. 2. The Longest Journey The Balance. It's all about the Balance. 3. Grim Fandango I just finished it. Excellent and unforgettable. Play it again Glottis. 4. ............ 5. ............
I hope to be getting a slew of games for Christmas or shortly after (Dark Fall, Post Mortem, Gabriel Knight series). Somehow, I feel one or more of those will fill up the remaining slots. Haven't played enough of the classics though. realMYST is up there, but it didn't quite grab me the way Riven did. Kept me up until early in the morning though.
For action I would have to say the best I've played so far is No One Lives Forever . Great fun. I just started playing Thief. All I can say is wow.
Cheers, Omnia

I'm in the middle of Riven now (for the first time). For some reason I just hadn't gotten to it until now. What a wonderful game; I'm actually sorry that it will have to come to an end at some point!

Status : Online | SirDave, Yup, it's truly a remarkable game. I couldn't help myself and plowed through it in a feverish 8 or 9 days [I lost serious amounts of sleep, but that's just my gaming style. Not the healthiest though when a game like Riven comes along.]
Anyway, I even joined a Myst series forum and posted my progress. Ahh, the memories. Such fun. Savor every moment. I must say if it wasn't for one hint someone on the forum gave me, without me even asking (though I was grateful) I never would have finished the game. It was the One Hint to Rule Them All and also one that made me look at things an entirely different way. I'll leave it to your imagination as to what that hint could already be. As you're already half way through, you probably already got past the part to which this hint applies. Enjoy!
Cheers, Omnia Also, there's a way to install the whole 5-disk package of goodness to your hard-drive and play without swapping. Helps gameplay a lot. [Read: aids reckless island hopping. ]

I got it as a gift, I hadn't heard about it or read any reviews before playing. I thought it was a masterpiece. Claustrophobic, with an original engine, good acting, mean puzzles and a bizarre story that kept surprising me. I don't understand why so many people hate it.

Status : Online | My TOP 10 (yeah, yeah, I know it was about TOP 5 actually, but like I care) "funny" adventure games (based on the jokes, funny dialogues, stupid puzzles etc.):
1. Day Of The Tentacle 2. Sam & Max Hit The Road 3. Simon The Sorcerer 4. Gobliins 2 5. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge 6. Discworld 2 7. Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis 8. Leisure Suit Larry 7: Love For Sail 9. Grim Fandango 10. King's Quest VI: Heir Today Gone Tomorrow
From the series (like Monkey Island, Larry, Simon) I only chose the part I like the most, although other parts of the same game are not worse from all those games in my list, but I just wanted to prevent one serie filling half of my TOP 10 list
My TOP 10 "serious" adventure games (based on the story, thrill, mystery, "feeling" etc.) in no particular order:
1. Broken Sword: The Shadow Of The Templars 2. Prisoner Of Ice 3. Shannara 4. Tex Murphy: The Pandora Directive 5. Harvester 6. Sherlock Holmes: The Case Of The Rose Tattoo 7. Phantasmagoria 8. Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within 9. The Dig 10. Quest For Glory I: So You Want To Be A Hero (VGA)

Status : Online | I have played Toonstruck actually, but it was about 6 years ago, so I can't really remember its "fun factor" that well... Anyway, I wanted to replay it a year ago, but couldn't make it run on my new computer I had back then (some impossible conflicts with the video card). Anyway, I guess I should try it again now with my current computer, I just haven't gotten a hold of it lately. From what I can remember - the game was funny, beautiful, had some cool puzzles but was sadly extremely underrated (the company didn't make any profits IIRC). The only thing that used to bore me a bit were those loooong almost neverending dialogues.
PS, I haven't played The Longest Journey nor Sanitarium, both which might be in my "serious" adventure games TOP 10 easily, at least from what I've heard about them.
