Deleted UserHello!

I'm new around here, but I've been a player of interactive fiction on and off since, oh, about 1984.  I'm pleased to see that this site had added some coverage of IF games recently, although I am also somewhat disappointed that this forum seems to be moribund.

It seems to me from reading through some of the posts here that many people may not be aware of just how much truly professional quality, well-written and implemented, completely free IF is out there.  I thought I would mention a few of my favorites and provide some direct links to downloads, since I know that the IF archive can be a bit confusing for the uninitiated to navigate their way through.

You will need an interpreter to play these games.  Here's a link to Windows Frotz 2002, the current best of breed for Windows:
http://ifarchive.plover.net/if-archive/infocom/interpreters/frotz/WindowsFrotz2002.zip
Interpreters for many other platforms are available.  I'd be happy to make suggestions if you just tell me what you'd like to play on.

Here are a few of my favorite games, any of which I  consider every bit as good as the best of Infocom... but often much larger and more completely implemented.

Anchorhead by Michael Gentry:
Horror IF at its best.  This is a huge, atmospheric game that is very story-oriented and not too difficult.  Very unsettling, definitely an homage to Lovecraft but also able to stand on its own terms.
http://ifarchive.plover.net/if-archive/games/zcode/anchor.z8

Heroine's Mantle by Andy Phillips:
A superhero story full of over-the-top action and larger than life villians.  If you dug Freedom Force, I think you'll dig this.
http://ifarchive.plover.net/if-archive/games/zcode/Heroine.z8

Jigsaw by Graham Nelson:
A time travel epic by the master himself.  You must right the course of history, in the process visiting 15 or so of the most significant events of the 20th century, all presented with complete historical accuracy.  The depth of research that went into this one is staggering.
ifficult, but well worth the time.
http://ifarchive.plover.net/if-archive/games/zcode/Jigsaw.z8

Photopia by Adam Cadre:
The poster child for modern puzzleless IF.  A beautifully touching tale well told.  Playable in an hour or so, but it will leave a lasting impression.
http://ifarchive.plover.net/if-archive/games/zcode/photopia.z5

Mulldoon Legacy by Jon Ingold:
A sprawling puzzle fest with a little bit of everything, backed up by an interesting framing story involving Time and Magik.
http://ifarchive.plover.net/if-archive/games/zcode/Mulldoon.z8

Spider and Web by Andrew Plotkin:
A cold war spy drama with a twist.
http://ifarchive.plover.net/if-archive/games/zcode/Tangle.z5

If you enjoyed the old Infocom games or have any interest at all in IF, do yourself a favor and check out these games and others on the IF Archive.  I'd be happy to post more tips and recommendations, but as a newbie I don't want to overstay my welcome.

Take care,
Jimmy

Hi, Bigstar!! Nice post...
You are right, there are many excelent IF games out there. Of those you mentioned, Anchorhead and Phototopia are those I enjoyed most. Might I add a few more games to your list? Babel. Kaged as well as So far are excelent games too.

Well, I am now in the middle of a trip but I hope I will be able to post more in the IF forum!!

I'm currently playing Infocom's Spellbreaker. Another great game!
The only thing I don't like is that you have to learn each spell you want to cast again and again. It soon gets on your nerves after a while, believe me.

playing: Destination Treasure Island (done in two sittings, but it's nice), Syberia (ho-hum), Dracula: Last Sanctuary (on hold)&&reading: even more study papers&&listening to: this and that, plus Musicovery&&TV favorites: (currently) Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Journeyman (cancelled! grrr...), Heroes&&
all-time) 24, Stargate SG1, X-Files, Lost, House

Hi and welcome, Bigstar!  Thanks for the hints and tips.

I'm looking forward to playing an IF similar to Anchorhead (with horror, suspense, etc...)
Perhaps I should have started a new thread for this, but, what the heck :
Hope you'll be able to forgive me

Any suggestions?

Deleted UserHello again, and thank you for the friendly welcomes.

Rpautassi:
I enjoyed Babel and Kaged as well.  So Far was a bit too obscure and (okay, I'll say it) pretentious for my tastes though.  Funny that, as Spider and Web by the same author is one of my all-time favorites.

Elfstone:
Spellbreaker is one my favorites by Infocom.  I found it very difficult, but always fair.... with one glaring exception.
You'll know that puzzle when you get to it, believe me).  I love the ending to this one.

Once you've finished, you might check out The Meteor, the Stone and a Long Glass of Sherbet by Graham Nelson (if you haven't already).  It's a sort of homage to the Enchanter trilogy, with the same spellcasting system and so on.  Really very well done.  Here's the link:
ftp://www.plover.net/if-archive/games/competition96/sherbet/sherbet.z5

Carla:
A few suggestions for ya...

Theatre by Brendon Wyber:
You are an unfortunate real estate agent who finds himself trapped for the night in a haunted, you guessed it, theatre.  The setting is based on an actual building in Virginia (I believe) which is allegedly haunted.
ftp://www.plover.net/if-archive/games/zcode/theatre.z5

Horror of Rylvania by Adventions:
Gothic horror.  You are an American college student backpacking through Eastern Europe with your girlfriend.  You come upon a village with a bit of a vampire problem...
ftp://www.plover.net/if-archive/games/adventions/adventions.zip
(This .zip files contains several other games as well).

Lurking Horror by Infocom:
You may have already played this one, but if not it's worth your time.  More Lovecraft influenced horror set on a darkened college campus during a snow storm.  Make sure you get the sound effects working if you play this one.  Let me know if you need a hand doing so.

Over and out...
Jimmy

I loved The Lurking Horror.  Very Lovecraft

Thank, Bigstar, guess I'll try Horror of Rylvania first

And again, thanks for the excellent links!

I strongly suggest Greystone - it seems to be a perfect fit with what you're looking for.

Hi Howard, it's great you to see you again.
So has Greystone already been released?  Cool.  I hope it doesn't take too long to get to Argentina
The previews are awesome, as well as the plot.

Thanks!
Greystone is in Alpha test right now and enters Beta Test this weekend.

The demo will be available on Halloween to whet your appetite. <big grin>

The official release date is Black Friday!

I'm not sure how this fits in with "Some excellent free IF to check out".

Thanks for all the links everyone!  Between this topic and my IF for PDA's topic, I've got more IF now than I could possibly play in 5 years!!  It sure didn't take long to become hooked on IF!

But, I've got a question for you.  Are there any sites that break the games down into catagories?  I mean I like horror and suspense fiction, but I'm not big on the fantasy stuff?  I know some game download sites give brief descriptions  for some of the games, but not all of them.  Is there anywhere this type of info is available?

Thanks for your help.

This site sorts the games by all sorts of categories:  http://www.wurb.com/if/.

Another site I found categorizes games by player rating:  http://www.carouselchain.com/if.

The Demo is 'free', technically speaking.  :
