| Deleted User | There IS a patch for the game, but it doesn't help out in the matter of the defective Disc 6. The disc itself is defective in some physical or coding manner which cannot be repaired or patched. And I WAS able to get through the game, but only by saving my game every few steps so that whenever the wackiness started, I could restore and try to bull my way through it. It also required occasionally clicking on objects that I couldn't really see. The walkthroughs were invaluable during this near-impossible stretch.

Status : Online | Do you still have this saves, by any chance? Maybe you could upload them at the Mystery Manor? Just a suggestion, since this Black Dahlia bug seems like a recurring problem among adventure players. I even might get to play Black Dahlia someday, and who knows? I might get the bad version of CD #6.
And to think that I almost bought this game the first time it was released here, a long time ago...

| Deleted User | Oh no. :-[ It's been years since I played it. I don't have the saves anymore. And don't let AVAKA and I dissuade you from buying the game. The problem is only with one batch of the games. Most play just fine. But be aware when you buy one that you are taking a chance. Just like when you buy a copy of Dark Side of the Moon there is a good chance that the fonts won't install correctly on your computer and it will be unplayable.
Lay yer money down and spin the wheel...

I mean, those number machines nearly had me sobbing over my keyboard...sure, a base-8 numeric system where the figures are decpited as colors sounds nice, but when you try to solve even BASIC arithmatic problems using it...oh, the pain....
Not to mention that accursed timed sequence near the end of the game...I couldn't play Rama again for weeks.
Other than that, it was a nice little game. Really, JA gave it a D, the same grade that they gave one of my other favorite games. Whoopee.

| Deleted User | I absolutely loved Rama myself. The three (and there are only three) places where you must do basic math problems in alternative base numbering systems all provide a pictoral representation of what system is being used and even a calculator that lets you experiment with that numbering system before you go across the hall and take the associated "tests" in that numbering system.
I suspect that Ray hated the game so much because he made the same mistake that a lot of critics did. They all tried using math to solve the various door lock puzzles. One CAN solve the puzzles this way, turning the various patterns into numbers, deducing that is the base number being used on each one, deciphering all the possible "key tiles" in one's inventory and then filling in the missing slots.
SPOILER..... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
However.... it is a snap to solve all of these door puzzles if you look at the tiles and simply use visual pattern recognition to figure out what tile goes in each empty slot. "Hrmmm... in this sequence, the dot moves one segment clockwise in the inner sector, there are no dots in the middle sector, and the dot moves two segments clockwise in the outer sector. Therefore, the missing tile must look like... THIS!"
Using this approach takes all the necessity of working in Base5, Base3 or any other alternative numbering systems out of the game. Except for the three "tests" already mentioned. This makes for a much more pleasurable game.
[EDIT: Plus, it appears from his review that Ray never figured out how one gets rid of obsolete inventory items, which can detract from the game too.]

| Deleted User | SPOILER . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . There is a storage box in the room that exits to the Central Plains. Remember it? You find some of the tiles there after they get picked up by other astronauts or the trashbots. You can unload extraneous inventory items into it.

That is only true for XP. No problems in older Win-versions. Same goes for Temujin (by the same company), but fortunately there are no dialogue trees and subtitles in Temujin, which leaves the minor annoyance of not seeing any letters appear when you're typing the name of a saved game.

| Deleted User | You are 100% incorrect about the font problem with DSotM being related to WinXP. I personally have owned two different copies of the game (one DVD and one CD) and tried them both on a total of 4 different computers, three with Win98 and one with WinXP. I could get the CD version to run on ONE of the three Win98 computers. This led me to do a lot of research on the problem and discuss it with many tech gurus. The problem is completely inconsistent. A CD or DVD that fails to install the font properly on one computer may work just fine on another one, regardless of the OS being used.
Inferno originally reported this as a WinXP related problem on her website. She now knows that the problem is unrelated to the OS, but hasn't changed her site to reflect this.
"Good boy." : Spare me.

Just a theory. Woof! Woof! Pant. Pant. Actually BJ, I'm used to being patted on the head, given a doggie biscuit, and being told "good girl".

Do you need a new collar, a-d? Thank goodness, that's one type we don't have in the NE. I've heard Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is no fun!
Do you think my collar is looking a little shabby?

I have too. That is to say, I still own the DVD and sold the 6 CDs some time ago. I have 3 computers -- young with XP, middleaged with Win98 and the oldest one with Win95. The oldest one does not have a DVD drive. As you can see, I wasn't going by Inferno's info alone, I've known all along that what she said about the DVD version not having the font problem is incorrect.
Both Temujin (no DVD version as far as I know) and DSotM have the font problem only on my XP machine.
