I would have to say that my most unfair moment EVER occured in Drowned God (a beautiful, but VERY flawed adventure).  The game had a bug that allowed you to get to point from which you could not progress (path to next area permanently blocked).  When they finally posted a patch, you had to start over in order to recover.
ARGH....  this was the game that prompted me to join the online gaming community... just to warn other gamers of the impending trap within this title :-)

Perfectly understandable. To date I blame Gates for the hole in the Ozone Layer, my brother's car being stolen last year, The Lord of the Rings not receiving the Best Picture Oscar and the Titanic (real and film version).
Some people are like a slinky. They might not be good for anything, but its fun to watch them tumble down stairs. &&

It's a lot worse when you're in a pinch and hit save instead of reload!

I don't really know if it helps, but in that GK1 bug at the police station, where you have to enter Mosely's office, I used the menu to help me get there faster.

How? Well, IIRC, I clicked the cursor of "open" on the gate, then, as Gabe goes to open it, I move my mouse cursor to the up part of the screen, and by doing that, the menu appears and the game pauses. Then I have more time to move my mouse a little more close to the door. I don't know if it helps or not, but I kept doing that in order to try and make the game run a little slower.

In Escape from Monkey Island, I spent hours trying to figure out how to recover the Marley heirlooms from the underground cave. I eventually discovered that it can't be done unless you've entered the Bank for a second time.

That might've been ok, but the game never gives us a reason to re-enter the Bank. I figured that since I was already there once, there would be no reason to go back. And it's not as if you can simply walk back in through the front door.

Regarding EMI, I think the puzzle in order to get all the legs, skin, head, etc. is really unfair. You have to go through ALL the conversation branches in order the get the ONLY object worth finding.

You mean I don't even need all of that stuff? I wasted a lot of time trying to use it all. It's a good example of how red herrings can be unfair.

I saw that open bank window and noted that Guybrush said he might be able to get in that way, but with all of the other red herrings in the game, I figured this was probably another one. I wasn't about to waste time on it unless I actually had a reason to.

I quit playing EMI a few weeks ago, but started again because I wanted to complete the series. I'm really starting to rethink my "no hints or walkthroughs" policy.

Yeah, I don't like to resort to hints, but sometimes I just can't figure the puzzle without some extra help. Also, I just HAVE to finish the games I start, it is in my nature!

I like to read the credits as I finish a game, it gives me a sense of completion, and I can then move to another game.

There are only few games which I have not finished.

Well I think the Monkey Kobat in Escape from MI is the most unfair moment in any game I've played, just ruined the game IMO - eventually uninstalled the game and still haven't finished it (will one day when Ive more patience). [smiley=furious.gif]

Jo, I wasn't bothered by Monkey Kombat at all, in fact, I finished that part in no time, it was just a matter of noting down the monkey kombat combos. If you made a chart with pen and paper, it would be really easy to figure it out.

IIRC, everytime you learn 1 new combo, you could note it down as it appears, then you could also note down the commands of the SAME move in reverse and presto! You have 2 combos in just one play.

If you ever get to play MI4 again, just send your savegame to me and I will gladly pass through the Monkey Kombat part for you, if you wish. I am totally imune against monkeys!

Jo, I feel exactly the same about MI4. I also quit the game and uninstalled  it
due to Monkey Kombat. I was so mad to  have played  almost to the end of the game and then have the game ruined by such insanity. >

I don't know what I would consider the most unfair, but I recently played Dark Seed and I took the gun from the police station right at the beginning of the game. This, of course, means that you will eventually encounter an unsolvable dead end with no apparent explanation much later in the game. The funny thing was, I looked at a walkthrough when I got stuck, and it said the police station would be empty after I was released, and of course it wasn't. I didn't know if it was a bug or what. The only reason I was even able to figure it out was by reading almost the entire walkthrough and seeing what I did that they didn't. Silly me for picking up objects like a good kleptomaniac adventure game player should...

Any game that inexplicably makes you start over from the beginning is unfair IMO. It's not like there was any way of knowing that I could only pick up the gun at a certain time without breaking the game when I first started playing.

I had a similar experience in Sam & Max Hit the Road. I rewired the housecleaning robot so it would only clean the room that Lee-Harvey was in. Bad idea (He won't let you touch it again). I had to start over. Lucky for me, I had a fairly recent savegame.

Kings Quest 4- Waiting for the STUPID WHALE to randomly appear.  And because the game is timed, you only have so long to actually see the stupid thing, and it might NEVER SHOW UP AT ALL!!!! [smiley=furious.gif]

Oh, these are great.  I can relive almost every moment that you all bring up.
What a great topic, even if I AM reliving some of the nightmares you mention.  It's a wonder we ever play any more AGs.  But we love them anyway.

Can't remember which game it was but it had like 6 discs and the very last disc of the game was bad and I never got to finish it ...  I thought was going to have to kill someone right then and there!!!  Couldn't believe it!
Myst IV - Never finished it.  Got frustrated with it.&&Myst V - Did not finish it either.  Very disappointing.&&ATTWN - BORING!!! Never finished it.  Kept falling asleep.&&Paradise - So far .... not so good&&Voyage - Not on my favorite list

Go to Save after a hard puzzle and instead hit Load/Restore.  Done that once or twice.

Another moment I found unfair in my early days of adventure gaming was in KQ6.  Alexander comes upon the lovely Cassima and in a matter of time he's supposed to give her something she can use later on (you lose the game if you don't give this to her).  And while she kind of hints on it, I was too dense to pick up on it & instead they stared lovingly at each other for awhile.  Later on ... oops lost the game b/c she didn't have that item.  Oops I kept saving over my one saved game and had to restart from the beginning.

I think that was the turning point where I learned to keep multiple saved games after that.

I miss my Bubba: 1986 - 2006.

A dead-end in a LucasArts game? Seems rather unlikely. After Zak McKracken and Maniac Mansion 1, LA had abolished dead-ends for good. They even started to mention this change in the beggining of each game manual, I suppose it was a way to make the games look different than the ones from other companies.

It seems to me your Sam & Max problem could have 2 solutions:

****SPOILERS****

1) Exit the the mansion of Conroy Bumpus, go do something else and then return, the robot would probably be cleaning the other parts of the house by now.

2) Go to the room where the stage is and try to get past the laser alarm, the henchman would them get away from his position and you could go back to the room where the robot is.

****END OF SPOILERS*****

I had the same problem with the robot. It's too long ago to remember what I tried to solve the problem, so your solutions may be correct, but I know I ended up restoring like mad.

Deleted UserAVAKA: You may be referring to Black Dahlia.  As I recall, it came on seven discs, but one whole pressing of them was released with a faulty Disc 6 which was near-impossible to get through.  It gave you a black or psychedelic screen every few steps.

BacardiJim, I think you're right!  Then there were gridlines all over the place and the scene was spinning. Thanks.

So you weren't able to finish the game either?

I remember now, I even sent the damages disc back to the company and they said they would burn me another one and send it to me.  Well, they sent me another disc but I think they burned a new one from my old one because I got the same results.

It's a drag to play a long and difficult game like that
almost to the end and not know the outcome.  I don't think I would ever replay that game again.  It wasn't an easy game.
