Today I went to 3 games shops looking for Rhem, 2 EB Games, and Babbages/Gamespot.  I live in Sarasota, FL, and let me tell you, finding games that aren't all hack and slash is nearly impossible around here.  I come from the Boston area, originally, and never had a problem finding what I wanted there, it is a very techy area, and you can find virtually any game made.  The final result was, as I was leaving the 2nd EB Games, a guy came in from another area, and called up the store in St. Petersburg, and they're going to send it to the Sarasota store for me tomorrow.  Of course, the guy from the Sarasota store didn't offer to check that out for me, nope, it took the guy from St. Pete to overhear me asking.
I often order games online, but when it is a new game, that extra $6 for S&H makes it kinda expensive, and you gotta wait a week to get it.  Harrumph!
Anyone else have this kind of experience?

Most definitely!  I don't even bother looking for games in the stores anymore.  It's all online buying.
amazon often has free shipping)

You're lucky you had someone helpful at EB.  I have been told at my store (40 minutes away) that they don't special order and if they have sold out of the few odd copies of the few odd adventure games that they carry - TOO BAD!

Because I live out in the country, even if I do have to pay for shipping, it's much cheaper than paying for gas and the wear and tear on my car to drive 60 or 90 miles round trip to get to the closest stores that carry games!

Still adventuring after all these years!

it's online all the way, baby !

little dawg and i are in a similiar situation with our rural roots...

but, i rarely buy brand new games at full price... hey !
there's lots of games to be had without paying an arm and a leg...

although... indie games are where i'll sink the bigger bucks because it's highly unlikely for those prices to come down...

still gaming...

I live in Brazil and it is really difficult to get adventure games around here. They do show up in stores every now and then, but is somewhat rare.

That is why whenever I see an adventure game, I just HAVE to buy it! It is like I have BAAGS or something.

But today I am happy. I managed to buy, second hand, the following games: The Longest Journey, Syberia, Kings Quest 6 and Monkey Island Madness collection. It is the first time I play them (except Monkey Island).

Finding good adventure games does NOT happen every often around here. Unfortunately.... :-/

What is it with these people?  They make a product and then don't distribute it properly.  No wonder AG isn't bringing in the big bucks.  They need the casual buyer not just the avid, hunt it down at all costs gamer.....

And while we're at it, let's tell them about the Great Southern Land.  Seems we're not even on the map for some people.....   >

Er. that's a yes.  I do have that problem.

Deleted UserI consider myself lucky because I buy my games from a lady that loves adventure games and that we also have the same taste. But yes, the second option is buying through the net.

I have been trading on Game Trading  Zone for over a year now and have been able to get a lot of games that I can't find at the stores.   The only time I can find a game at a store without having to drive far and wide (and I live right near Dallas) is when the game has received a lot of hoopla before it was released.  And then few remain on the shelf for more than a couple of months.  Anything older than that, I rely on GTZ.

Maybe AG distributors could come up with a trade in program?
Wouldn't that be a logistical mess!)

You lucky bastards.

You have all the possibilities:
  • The Majority of EB users are americans who don't ship outside U.S. (It's better at GameTZ though)
  • The postage for games with boxes at big american sites (most of them are) outside US is about 20-30$ (+ an additional fee for every game). You can get them with boxes for 6$
  • You don't have to worry about badly dubbed versions. We usually don't have a choice.
If you wanna find a game here in Sweden (and most countries outside U.S.) you better accept cheap ugly re-releses. Ordering online is usually the only way.

You lucky lucky bastards.

Deleted UserSorry, Friday, that is really awful for you, but as you can tell, even in the US things aren't always what you could ask for.  The US is overrun with chain stores, all like they were cut from the same cookie cutter.  Whether it's fast food, groceries, books, hardware, or electronics and games, you get only what the chains offer, or you're out of luck.  Such is the way of big business in the US.  Small businesses can't compete, and often don't survive in the market.  Chain stores can buy in bulk, so their costs are less, but doing so narrows the selection offered - only best sellers will be available.  Small businesses will make it only if they can find a niche market for their products.  And adventure games are not seen to be best sellers, so they are hard to find.

Hi Fairygodmother,
PLaying Games Interactive is totally devoted to Adv. Games, and they are located in Largo, Fl.  Is that far from you?
They have a great OnLine store as well, at (what else?)
playinggamesinteractive.com.
There are only TWO kinds of food - CHOCOLATE and NON-Chocolate

I usually go to a place calles "MovieMan's" to get my adventure games.  They buy and sell movies and games and most of the games that end up there are adventures.  Even better, they've stopped buying and selling computer games, so they had a liquidation sale: All games $5 or $10 for 3.  I basically bought everything on the racks
.
What is matter? What is mind? No matter. Never mind.

@Fairygodmother: I know it's more common with big chain stores in U.S. and it must be irritating not being able to find a good old shop with a variated selection. When it comes to many things Europe has benefits towards America.
I can understand that you like the feeling of buying a game in a shop, I prefer it too, especially since I hate re-releses and DVD cases etc. But if you can find it factory sealed on amazon.com for 24.99 with free shipping (if you invest another cent) there isn't such a big problem is it?

Hi all,

On the first page of gameboomers -
http://www.gameboomers.com ,
click on BAAGer's Delight, top of the page, right.  You will get a list of sources for games.  Be sure to look at all the sources, not just the area of the world you are in, particularly if you want a game so much that you are willing to pay the shipping charges.   As an example, cdaccess, a site listed in the US, ships internationally.

Hope this helps.

Regards, mszv

Well according to my Florida map, it's 51 miles, and just north of St Pete.  I certainly think it's worthwhile to look them up, though I couldn't go very often.  Thanks for the info.

Did something change on Amazon?  I've always had to pay shipping from them.  Maybe I didn't meet the minimum purchase dollar amount.

If you order for 25$ or more from U.S. you get free shipping. Don't know for how long they've had this offer.

For at least 3 or 4 months I think.  It even works if you pre-order items that are each less than $25 but the total order is over.  You just have to look on the page where you select the item that it is included in the free shipping offer.  Then at the checkout make sure that you have selected the free shipping option.

No need, I linked to it (blue text = link).

Deleted UserI have a great deal of trouble finding adventure games in Canada. We have big-box stores which generally have a small selection- but there are even fewer of them than in the US- it's Business Depot or Radio Shack, both of which have very few computer games, let alone adventures.
I've got some adventures at used game places but I am running out of stores and having little success. After I finish The Watchmaker I'll be out of games and little chances of getting more.
