Deleted UserNote to Admins: Could you move this to an IF forum? Thanks

I have recently been playing a really really old (but entertaining), and extremely rare and hard to find, text adventure game with some minimal graphics made for Atari 8-bit computers. It is called "Cloak of Death" (the game seems to be centered around an Exorcist theme). I had a big nostalgia, since it was one of the first games I've played back in the days. I still have it on an old casette tape but I don't have my Atari computer anymore :'(. However, I was glad to find an image of it that runs on the Atari emulators for PC. So, I decided to play it again because I never played it much back then, due to having to move to a new place and leaving my Atari behind :-/

Anyway, the problem is that I'm now stuck in it and there are no walkthroughs for it whatsoever. So, I'm calling on all of you that are willing to give an old and somewhat obscure text adventure game a shot, and see if we can solve it together. I will give you the necessary links and a partial walkthough that I wrote for it so far. Oh, and as far as I know it is ok, since the emulator and ROMs (that were posted with permission of Atari itself) are all legal. However, if the moderators here feel that this isn't allowed then my apologies and by all means remove this post. But otherwise...

Go to this page:

http://www.atari8bit-software.de/index_e.htm

From the pulldown menu choose "Emulators/Tools". Download "Atari800Win Plus V3.x" and extract it to "Atari800Win" folder on your drive. Then download "ATARI ROMs" file and extract it to "ROMS" subfolder in your "Atari800Win" folder. Then from the same pulldown menu choose "Games (sorted)" and find "Cloak of Death". Download and extract it wherever you like ("Games" subfolder in "Atari800Win" folder, for example).

The next step is to run the emulator itself and choose "File>Attach Disk>
rive 1" and browse to the extracted .atr image. Then hit SHIFT+F5 to reboot. After the screen shows up with the menu, choose "B" for "Cloak of Death". Then some cheesy music will play, so quickly hit any key you like to get the game started.

Once the game has started choose "N" not to load a save game, since it doesn't work properly within a game. In order to properly save games use ALT-Z to save and ALT-L to load. (ALT-ENTER for fullscreen and back, if you like).

NOTE: Certain rooms within the game will have text and background as the same color (possibly emulator not displaying it correctly). However, a work-around is to hit "ENTER" without giving any commands after "What shall I do?" and the graphics screen will disappear, leaving text-only. Hitting "ENTER" again will bring the graphics screen back (when you feel you're in a room where text is now readable).

Here's a link to more notes/suggestions and a partial walkthrough that I wrote so far:
http://kav.htmlplanet.com/ (save it to hard drive just in case the site goes down)

So, if you could give it a shot and see if you can figure out what to do after I got stuck, I would appreciate it very much. Oh, and excuse any spelling/grammar mistakes I might've made in this post or the notes/walkthrough, since I wrote it in a rush. Thanks! :-)

PS I wasn't sure whether to post it here or in Hints/Walkthoughs section, so if moderators feel like it needs to be moved then by all means.

Deleted UserWhat, no one's willing to give it a try? Awww, I'm disappointed. I thought this board was full of true adventurers
(I think after this msg I'll get a response, even if not a nice one, lol OR I won't get any just because I said I will, lol). Oh, I'm joking

Hey, I think I'll give it a try. You might want to try posting this on the interactive fiction board; it might get more attention there

Deleted UserHey, szcax, thanks!
All right, I'll wait a bit more to see if there are any replies here and then consider posting it on IF board as you suggested.

Actually, if any moderators are reading this, could you please move it to IF forum? I understand that you may not have the time to check every post here, so you may never see this but if you do then I'd appreciate it

Otherwise, I'll just try posting it as a new msg there myself soon

Deleted UserJust a minor update (just in case) -- I figured out what the letter is for now but before I can use it, there's something else that needs solving.

Hi there.  I played this game years ago and started to replay it about 2 weeks ago.  I never finished it back then...and I am stuck in the same place now!!!  I read your wakthrough and I seem to be in the same place, trying to exorcise the cloak!  I will let you know if I get any further.

P.S. I also think that the water is important somehow (I'm thinking Holy Water)

P.P.S. The book that you push in the Library to find the secret passageway is the Exorcist...which you can take!  Can't figure out how to use it though.....

Deleted UserHi, ringbearer!

Nice to hear from you. I know that the book is "The Exorcist", that's why one of the commands in the walkthrough is "read book", hehe.
I know it can be taken but I'm not sure if it has any more uses rather than just being pushed to open a secret passageway.

Although seaching "google" for Exorcism info provides different materials, the most basic ritual consists of first ringing a bell, then closing a book (often bible), and extinguishing a candle as a final step. However, one can't seem to be able to close neither book nor bible in this game, so perhaps it uses a different approach. Some other sites mentioned the need for a whine (to trap the spirit), while there are also obvious things like crucifix (which we have by now), and, as you remember from the movie "Exorcist", holy water.

But then there's a question... Do we do each step seperately, or do we simply need the necessary items, and then type "exorcise cloak"? "Exorcise cloak" resuls in "you can't do that just yet", so it's most likely needed later, whether after taking individual steps or having necessary items.

I've put the game aside for now until I get any new ideas on how to exorcise the cloak...

Also, the water does seem to be needed. But why won't the game allow us to use the whine bottle for it? Maybe whine is needed elsewhere, so it considers it as an irreplaceable item...

GOOD NEWS!!!

I managed to complete the game!!!  The trick we've been missing was in the silk cord.  I guessed that when you leave the room it probably resets - I was right.  You have to make it stay 'pulled'.  You do this by pulling the cord, then dropping the lump of iron.  This makes a secret annex open elsewhere....

The rest of the game is pretty easy so I won't bore you with the details.  Let me know how you do.

Deleted UserHey, Anthony.

I was emailing back and forth with someone about this game, and we too agreed that the cord resets itself each time you leave the room and needs to be secured somehow. I suspected that it had to be secured by dropping something like with the cellar door but alas, I didn't know what to drop, and was too tired to try to drop every little thing, hehe.

I would've preferred that you gave me a hint before a solution, ie "the trick is in a cord, you have to make it stay pulled..." as I like to come up with solutions on my own, but it's too late for that since I've already read your post, hehe. No big deal though, good work. :-)
