Status : Offline | I'd like to make all game developers play Obsidian. It was a sublime game. It always crashed on my old pc when I changed discs until eventually it just wouldn't play. :'( I had to upgrade my pc for Exile anyway. Imagine my sheer delight when I loaded Obsidian and discovered that not only did it not crash, but that it ran better and looked better. When Daryl played it I loaded a save game and went back to the Spider. I just loved it when it moves and scoops you up into its mouth. Brilliant use of perspective. I got such a thrill out of the inventiveness and creativitiy of that whole joke. It took me a year to complete. I filled pages trying to crack the chemistry puzzle. The end game had me goggle eyed but I got there in the end. I loved every minute of it. Right up there with Riven and Timelapse in my mind. And to think I got it on a bargain table and only bought it because I had no game to play. HA! I spend ages looking for another such 'bargain'.

We adventure gamers are the biggest bunch of hair-triggered, provincial, neophobic, judgmental whiny babies since that huge group of southern American women who, sixty-five years ago, threatened to boycott the film of “Gone With the Wind” because David O. Selznick hired a Brit to play Scarlet O’Hara. |
LOL

The problem was that if he would have kept some of the swaring out of it people might have payed more atention to the point he was trying to make. I am not agaist changes but a lot of these new games are changed so radicaly that they are no longer Adventure games or Action games either. I am afraid we are loosing some of the good things that belong in an adventure game in the process. It is now becomming a real job just to get through some on them and it's suposed to be fun and relaxing.

Steve, You are missing one point. There are other things action game engines do besides shoot things that are not good for adventure games. I won't mention them as I am sure you know what they are.

If jalex missed it the first time, it's new for him, and it's not his fault we're sick and tired of the thread.

I really wish people would stop with the 3D engine=action crap. BS3 is pure adventure that happens to use a different interface. Whether you like the interface or not is your own personal preferences, but don't dismiss it as an action game just because you can't move the character around. Pandora Directive one of my favourite games was direct control and it's held up as one of the best adventures created. Grim Fandango uses an identical control system and it is superb.
It's just a different way of presenting adventures.
Rays article was spot on and makes for fantastic reading.

I haven't, so I'm not going to make blanket statements about it. My only point is that you shouldn't prejudge it based on the interface. Also, my name is not Flickflack.

Remember that there was a time when computers didnt have a mouse at all!
Some examples of direct control adventures: Kings Quest 1-4, Space Quest 1-3, Quest for Glory 1-2, Leisure Suit Larry 1-3. And we cant forget more recent games like Grim Fandango and Monkey Island 4.
Some adventures that combine direct control with mouse control: GK3, Amazon: Guardians of Eden, Tex Murphy series.
