Deleted User...when?

Looking at the future commercial lineup and the considerable amount of classy, playable independent games that has come out recently (GO ROGER CHARLIE!)... A year like this is a damn good time for AGer's.

I remember back at Christmas - damn, things looked pretty bleak! The main discussion was the death of adventure gaming, now it possibly looks like we may be talking about the dearth of adventure gaming...

Any thoughts?

I never really bought into that "Adventures games are dead" bit, although I was pretty concerned about the state of adventure gaming over the last few years. As you say, however, this year looks great for adventures. I'd say the genre has been making something of a comeback over the last year or two, and I look forward to what this year will bring:

Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon (Hearing about this has convinced me to pick up the first two games, good advertising!)

Dark Fall (Adventure Company release) and Dark Fall 2

Rhem (Got Game Entertainment release)

I know both Dark Fall and Rhem have already been released by their authors, but this means a couple of well regarded games are getting wider distribution!

Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (This game could revolutionize adventuring with online play. It's an original idea for an adventure and I am very interested to see what the final product is like.)

And some other popular games are getting sequels this year: Full Throttle 2, Schizm 2, and The Crystal Key 2 are all scheduled to be released this year.

And there's probably a bunch of stuff I've missed, but from what I've listed it's plain to see we have a lot of potentially great games to look forward to this year.

Oh yeah, and the English release of Runaway....maybe.

It's tough to say what was the last great year for adventure games.  It definetly wasn't 2001 or 2002.  I guess we could consider 2000 because of TLJ and MI4, but it's still not the strongest lineup.  1999 wasn't a very good year either.  I guess it's either 1997 or 1998.  1998 had Grim Fandango and Sanitarium, as well as a few other solid titles, whereas 1997 was the last year adventures were in full swing and there was a large quantity of good games, like BS2, Zork, MI3, Blade Runner, Riven, etc.

Deleted UserOh yes! A great year for adventures, no doubt about it. How many new game releases have we seen in the past six months?  Lots... of course there were lots, I just can't seem to remember them... ah yes, the Omega Stone... and... ah yes, A Quiet Weekend in Capri.  And Salammbo. And CSI... WOW! That's 4 games in 6 months, plus a couple of amateur games by dedicated fans. What a great year this is!

Comeback...!?! More like a steady decline, if you ask me.

Please tell me, what year was the all-time low, what year did we hit rock bottom?

It's the best year for adventure games concerning news.  I mean, adventure gamers can now actually discuss what they think of games coming out in the future.  Last year, all we knew was that Sam and Max 2 and Full Throttle 2 were being made and that was it.

Bob and Javabean are correct.  Let's not count our chickens before they hatch.  There haven't been any great offerings so far this year.  Hopefully that'll change soon.

Deleted UserThing is, Juji, if you were here before Christmas there was absolutely NOTHING to look forward to whatsoever... there's more in development for release at the last quarter in terms of AG's than I've seen for a long time.

True, so far no actual games have been released and we don't really know their state (well, some of us do) but there's stuff on the way! And the care and attention that the developers are paying to our views is more than can be said than any other genre...

Yes, the last couple of years have been very depressing - remember Randy's E3 2002 article? But now things are definitely looking up.

You're very depressing. I was excited about new adventure games but now you have made me see that they're all awful.

How do you know they're not good if you haven't played them? ESP?

I for one can't wait for some of the games that are on the horizon.  The only problem is that I have to, well, wait for them.

Plus most of the games you mentioned in the other years were dreamcatcher games that sucked.  There's still another half year for more adventure games to come out and that's when they're all supposed to come out, just wait.

My personal preferences (and yours) are not really the point.  Lots of people were looking forward to the Omega Stone and do enjoy it. You may think that's not a good game (I couldn't get into it, played it only for a couple of hours) but does that give anyone the right to discount it as an AG? Many people like nancy drew games. I don't, but that's no reason to pretend they're not adventures. I loved Dark Fall and I'll buy the sequel the moment it's released. But people who don't like first-person games with lots to read, few interactions etcetera, will probably start threads moaning that there's nothing to look forward to.

My post was about the *quantity*, not the quality. It's a fact that the years 2001 and 2002 were not good years. The year 2003 will not be a good year. Three bad years in a row. No all-time low, no "picking up". Maybe next year... who knows.

What I was trying to point out was that this is a big year for Grade A (hopefully) adventure games (all of the ones coming out during fall and winter) and the news about the jane jensen game.

You're right, Last Express is one of my faves as well.  I was gonna mention LBA2, but I figured that'd open the action/adventure door and I'd have to start mentioning stuff like Redguard and Outcast and people would start getting pissy about it.
