Status : Offline | Eva said finally got around to finishing Post Mortem. It was an okay game but I feel the rather interesting story could have been explored much more - I've quite enjoyed it so far, but as I think someone here said, it sort of goes off in a tangent giving you clues to something you haven't got to as yet. I find that pretty annoying - and the other thing, is it my imagination or is there a "dreaded Maze"? Or somehing similar to one anyway? If you've played it you'll know where I mean (don't want to give it away to anyone who hasn't played it yet)
God I really hate mazes, they always seem so pointless. I could be wrong of course as I finished at that point yesterday.

Btw, a couple of times I had to use hints in this game because the screen was so dark!

I read somewhere that they would need something like 12 (or maybe more) cd's to equal what's on the DVD, and it's just not reasonable. Also, if more developers starting including extras on DVD versions, or just started making the games for DVD period, it might finally launch the DVD format into the mainstream where it needs to be. All the console systems have wisened up and are using (or will be using) a variant of DVD technology as media for their current or next-gen systems. DVD players are priced low enough now to where everyone could actually afford one. We just need the software developers to give us a reason to *need* one.
I partly agree with you. They should have made it clearer from the start that the dvd version had more scenes than the cd version, not something you'd notice afterwards. Secondly, I still think it is unfair that the dvd game is longer than the cd version, even if it would mean the game would have consisted of 12 cds, and again, certainly when they did not make it clear on the packaging of the two versions of the game. The same goes for movies on video and dvd. Yes the dvd contains extras (well, mostly at least), but the film should be the same. I would understand that the dvd-rom version of a game would look better and sound clearer. But to make the dvd-rom version of a game longer than the cd version still sounds like deceit to me.
Apart from that, I agree with you that dvd-rom should be better promoted for games. I don't understand why most developers have left dvd-rom out of consideration for their games. So yes, it would be nice if they gave the dvd-rom version of their game something extra (better graphics, and other extras) as long as the game itself remains the same. Oh well, they'll follow the example of the consoles eventually. :

I understand that mapping has already been done and is available but I'll start by trying to make my own.

I think you are right - the non-linearity required some sacrifice of complexity. It was difficult enough with the branching dialog system to keep from leaking too much info before it had been encountered in the gameplay. I think the developers were on to a good idea. With the next game of this type it will be more sophisticated.

SPOILER | | | | |
I don't think so - the only times I noticed a difference was with the ending conversation, you could get some slightly different cutscenes - the final one was the same though - where did it branch off?

I think the Dreamcatcher website has a note about the extra scenes in the dvd version of Schizm, but I'm not sure of that. I remember a thread on one forum that listed every DVD adventure game available, and what differed between that version and the cd version.

It discusses which DVD games are superior to the cd-rom version.
Here is a thread listing a bunch of DVD games: http://www.gameboomers.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=009726

Seems like most dvd games are Cryo games. :-/ (not really my cup of tea) Oh well, let's hope that the future will bring better things. Btw: just unbelievable what happened with that Faust dvd version! Wrong sound files played during the ending. Wow, big screw-up of Cryo!

Status : Online | Finished TLJ two days ago. Yes, it's one of the best adventures I played in a while. But not among the top ranks ever. There is too much talking at times. Sure, there's lots of story, but some conversations are very tiring. The story telling part was worst. Especially the old Alatien... : Puzzles are nice. I admit I looked up some hints once, but the rest was easy enough to figure out on your own.
Currently I'm playing Full Throttle. For the first time, too. Interesting, so far.

I wouldn't bet on it... then again, if the competition is Runaway, anything's possible The Czech version of Black Mirror was seriously delayed too. I think it was originally supposed to come out before Christmas 2001 or something.

I just bought The Longest Journey, Syberia AND Kings Quest 6!!! The best thing is that, since I bought them second hand, they were REALLY cheap! (I even got the Monkey Island Madness collection with it)
I am so happy! I never played any of these games (except Monkey Island). I was so excited that it was difficult to choose just one game to start playing. I finally made up my mind and begun The Longest Journey. I am loving it!!

Oh and finished Blade Runner last week but I was a bit disappointed with it. Under the bed and on the conveyor belt are Nightlong, BS1, Pilgrim, The Dig if I can ever get the sound to work, BS1 and Outcast. I was pleased to see some positive comments on Discworld Noir - I thought that had an excellent, extremely funny script and was an exciting, interesting adventure apart from some tedium in trying to talk to that sculptor bloke.
