Ok, I found it interesting that all of a sudden, there were Atari games around again. So I figured somebody had bought the label.

Last week, I found out who did. There once was a old (+-20 years in the business) and fairly respected publisher in France named Infogrames...

...and they are the morons who bought the label and dropped their own. Is there anyone else out there that thinks this is stupid? Why drop a perfectly good label like Infogrames, and take on the Atari label, known primarily for two things: a computer which never made it and cheap arcade games?

I don't totally understand it myself.  Infogrames was/is a very well respected publisher.  They produced the Independence War series, Civ 3, and Outcast if I'm not mistaken.  Not sure why they'd want to use the Atari moniker, considering everything Atari has done over the last 20 years has failed miserably.

Deleted UserI used to have an Atari computer- it wasn't bad. I played Magnetic Scrolls games on it.

I'll take your word for it that the Amiga was better.

The Amiga (500 model was it's competition) was not better. The Atari had better a/v, but was just lacking support on the software end of things, not unlike the PC vs MAC race that happened a few years after that.

Deleted UserI used to have an Atari too and I also played all the Magnetic Scrolls on it. Plus most Infocom text adventures. Plus some of Sierra's King's Quest, Police Quest, Space Quest series.  Wonderful computer, silent (no fan) except for the whizzing external disk drive, best black-and-white monitor ever. It's the only computer that I regretted selling.

Silly thing to do... (Unless they had a good reason....).

The Atari has brought the world crap like "Custer's Revenge", one of the reasons Amiga was better.

Atari is a very well known name, that's why.  A lot of people don't remember them for causing the great video game crash of 1984 or the Jaguar, but they do remember things like the Atari 2600.

Custer's Revenge wasn't made by Atari

The Atari 2600 was an OK system, but the games were often suspect (ET, anyone).  Nintendo blew them out of the water because they had actual software quality control, not because the hardware was better.

Hard to compare the old Atari ST and the Amiga. The Amiga was very much games and graphics orientated, and could throw the old bitmaps around faster.. where as the ST was a more rounded general computer, a kind of PC before PCs! (IBM Compat I mean, obviously they where ALL Personal Computers!) Plus the ST literally rocked and was used widley in the music industry for years after the home user abandoned both the ST and Amiga.. both of them where taken over in the home by consoles.. the Super Nintendeo mainly taking the credit.. this was all before Sony arrived on the scene of course.. when a PlayStation was one of those activity centres you bought for your baby!

Well I said that the Atari had better A and V, I was wrong there of course, it just had the better audio. Amiga had better video (where talking about the A500 period of time). But let's move on, it's not what this thread is about...

Yep, it was an exceptionally dumb move.  I just can just imagine them rereleasing all of their old games with a new label: Alone In The Dark by Atari.  it seems like a joke.

Deleted UserI think I can answer the question in just one word:  Survivor.

Not only was the game so heavily glitched as to be unplayable, even if it could be played it was so horrid as to make Timeline look like Timelapse by comparison.

And there was the Infogrames name plastered in giant print all over the box.  Such an ignoble end for a once-great name...
