Status : Offline | I would have to agree with original post, the AG I play now are tired, or at least I am tired of them. I still enjoy them, but it’s not like the first time I played MYST or Riven. It is still the thin plot, with 3D or real actors, and puzzles, just like the first MYST game. AG games need to evolve to the next stage of development of real time rendering and AI. The final goal of AG is a movie that the player can participate in. That will be a few years down the road, but I can visualize it. A game where the 3D characters look real, and respond to your actions, questions, answers. A game with many endings and no real win/lose ending. You either like the way it ends or you play the game again and try to make the movie end differently.

I supose games like The Sims show hope, in that each character in the sims has a range of personality traits, likes/dislikes etc. Imagine.. a neighbourhood of 20-30 people, each randomly created at game start with their personalities, matched up so some become partners, each with a career, and ambisions. The game then works out someone likly to kill someone else.. sets it up. And you start the game, murder having been done, having to work out who did it, by asking questions etc. Each character having different levels of honesty etc. Plus whilst you're not talking to them, they go about their daily business.. going to work, eating, cleaning, socialising.. using the bath room... could be interesting.. and whould mean something good has come out on The Sims franchise!

Status : Offline | The game does not have to be real life, in fact I prefer my games to be off world background settings.
Future AG could be real time rendering with AI, an interactive movie. The game could start on a planet like Riven, where you have the choice of helping one side or the other to win the struggle and escape the planet before it is destroyed.
In fact I would prefer it to be anything but earth life. Off world characters with strange customs, and off world scenery would be my choice. And, it does not have to be a shooter. It could be hidden passages and hidden doors. Hidden plots and plans within plans.

All you need next is a team of ace AI programers to make the characters happen. This type of game would not have levels, and the first ones would be small games. The real work is building characters with AI, who can respond emotionally and take a course of action. This would not be an easy game make, but once you had the character program, you could use it again and again in modified form to make other characters. Some game company is going to have to gamble with five to ten million to make the first one. I see this type of AG being the logical outcome of todays AG. Just in the same way movies have reached a standard form, AG needs to develop into an interactive movie where the player can take a part in the story. I am not saying it would be easy to make the first one. I am saying that the present AGs are getting to be old hat and that it's time for the next step in AG development. The next time you play one of the present AG games (even a good one) you will get that feeling of 'sameness', and you will know what I mean.
