Looks like no ones given "
" as an answer yet - It was kind of a spooky little game.

What?

Shivers or Amber get my vote - although I recommend picking up The Blackstone Chronicles or Morpheus for a good scare.

To me, the scariest game was Silent Hill 1. I also had some trouble sleeping after Resident Evil 2 and Alone in the Dark 1.

I played Phantasmagoria 1, but I never felt really scared. I was only somewhat annoyed by the gorier scenes, but not because they were scary. Not at all. They were just YUCKY!

I can't say any game was actually scary to me, but I have to agree that SH2 and RotH were good games on the action-adventure front.

Phantasmagoria 1 and 2
Dark Fall
Alone in the DARK (the first one) the sound of the doors was really screepy, and the overall atmosphere.

then there aren't many real terrorific adventures

Hound of Shadow!! Although this game is easily 10-15 years old and a text adventure, it's still the game that scared me the most. You instantly get caught in the suspense of the really good story. It also is very easy to identify with the main character and since he's seriously being haunted, you can imagine how you feel playing the game... It's a super game!!

I can still remember playing it at night and getting so caught up in the story that the only way out of it all seemed to be finishing the game. (Un)fortunately it's quite a difficult one. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep back then

Blackstone Chronicles - exellent gamne with great atmosphere;
Shadow of the Comet - great adventure based on Lovecrafts works;
Waxworks - made by Horrosoft. What's more?
Sanitarium - very good horror game, but sometimes it looks somewhat...childich?

Hmm... don't know about the scariest, but quite a few games have freaked me out over the years...

Blackstone Chronicles had its moments.

The scenes with the deformed kids in Sanitarium were pretty unsettling, but all in all it was too cool to be really frightening.

Realms of the Haunting was pretty creepy, but I didn't finish it either, which was annoying.

Like DJ - I didn't find Phantasmagoria frightening at all (apart from the frightening acting going on). The end was just nausea inducing, not particularly chilling.

Have to agree with Cerberus - the Thief games have chapters that are terrifying... I can hear the hiss of electric lamps, the thump of distant pistons and the screams and scuttles of giant spiders even now... brrrr!

I think my ultimate would be GK2 - I find werewolves pretty unsettling anyway, so poking about in caves in the woods didn't do much for my nerves.

can't wait to see that!

i can't really say there's a scary adventure that i have played, although there are some that are unsettling (eg blackstone chronicles)... the only game (action adventure) that i've played and could consider scary is silent hill 3, followed by sh1... sh2 didn't quite make it in the scary department for me, but its atmosphere was great nevertheless

i haven't played the scary txt advs yet (lurking horror, hound of shadow), but i don't think they can do what sh3's visuals did!

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

And while the game itself wasn't as good overall, I found the atmosphere, tension and general "scare" factor to be MUCH better in Shivers 2 than in the original.

I guess some people found silly-looking imps jumping out at them despite the obvious warning sounds to be "scary."

It's just a shame that so much of the actual gameplay of  Shivers 2 fell apart into doing the same thing over and over and over and over...

Deleted UserAmerzone was so scary. I was awake for years after that, wondering when that soldier would wake up and come chasing after me.

Are you talking about Elvira II? If so I would say that a good choice and probably mine too.

I've just finished Black Mirror (believe it or not, it has taken this long for it to be released in Denmark, actually its a review copy I'm playing) and didn't find it scary at all. But that *may* have something to do with the voice acting
Or just the cliché locations and plot - I actually found myself laughing at the design of the final room in the game. Oh yeah, and did anyone notice that the flashback scene, where you realize who the murderer is, was just like the one in GK2 - including the color of the hairs?

As for the scariest games ever, let's see:

Harvester
Dreamweb
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream

Darkseed and Shadow of the Comet were pretty good too, but just a bit too predictable to be really disturbing.

For me, that wasn't the case at all.  It was those instances where I would enter a location or turn around just in time to see a shadow disappear.  I thought I was alone in that museum (with the exception of the Ixupi), so what was out there?

Other games have had similar elements, yes, including Shivers 2.  But that game was my first experience with anything like that, so that's why it's the scariest for me.

Everyone else who found it scary is on their own.

I also vote for Darkfall.  And Amber was also pretty scary.  Some other games have made me jump, but haven't scared me consistenly throughout the game like Darkfall did.
