Status : Offline | Scariest game for me would have been Shivers back when I first played it. With its Teen rating, it was the first "scary" game I ever played. The things that scared me about it (and what I love about it now) are the complete solitude in the museum, creepy music, and the occasional essence jumping out at you. I hated going through the execution room on my way to the puzzle room. Of course, it probably didn't help that I always played the game before going to bed!

Status : Online | Darkfall -- It had that creepy old haunted house feel about it and didn't spoil it by thoriwng buckets of blood and gore into the picture.
Anchorhead -- Fantastic IF. If you haven't played it you should download it immediately (it's freeware). It feels very much like one of Lovecraft's Mythos tales (especially Shadows of Innesmouth).
Realms of the Haunting -- More of an action adventure but VERY moody and creepy. I'd love to see this remade with a newer game engine. Excellent plot, good acting and some nice puzzles. Never did manage to finish it though, could always get to a certain chapter then kept running out of ammo!
Thief -- Not really an adventure game but you don't truly know fear until you play certain levels of this game with the lights out and the volume up.

Status : Online | Phantasmagoria. However, I played that when I was 11 years old, so that might've had some sort of effect. I played it with my 14yr old sister, and I remember how we both ran out of the room when you go downstairs and hear some sort of crying or something and you go into that side room and it's just a mouse. Scared the living daylights out of us.

I downloaded that Fiend game, and it looks quite interesting - unfortunately it's too dark on my monitor to see what the hecks going on, I'll probably need to fiddle with some settings.

Status : Online | Fiend is quite good. There are a few spelling mistakes (speling mystäckess) and sometimes the controls are a bit hard, but beyond that it's a lot of fun. It's like a Cthulu version of Resident Evil ... sort of. And hey, it's free!

Status : Online | Phantasmagoria 2. At least, the early parts. By the end it had gone way downhill. But around the middle part, it had that definite "It's just a game!" kind of thing going, which was just what I need.
And of course, Gabriel Knight series. The forest hunting scene in 2 was AMAZING.

No game has scared me all the way through before (not just relying on brief shocks occasionally - but a genuinely scary atmosphere).

| Deleted User | I found Amber, Journeys Beyond to be quite frightnening. I haven't even finished the game. I found the scariest part so far is when you play the video.
I also really liked Gabriel Knight 2, especially Grace's dreams.

even after completing it I really wondered what silent hill was all about(the town). I searched the net and found lots of info..read a lot about it..very interesting. I never played the first one so I don`t know what was explained there.
I wonder if I should play it again, since there are four other endings. but it`scary!

Status : Online | Scariest pure adventure is probably Dark Fall, although the single scariest moment was in Lighthouse when I opened a door and there was a huge monster on the other side. Startling in a game where I'd seen nothing moving at all before.
If we're going to include action/adventure games like Realms of the Haunting though, then I'll say Fatal Frame, followed by Silent Hill 2.
