| Deleted User | Definitely Muriel Gray. Get either "The Trickster" or "The Ancient" and scare yourself silly by Stephen Kings favourite horror author. Out of the two I'd go for The Trickster, as it's thoroughly terrifying yet warm - you know how King juxtaposes the supernatural with cosy atmos? She does the same, only the supernatural stuff is twice as freaky and based on real legends.
I'm just starting to read Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End Of The World by Haruki Murakami on my girlfriends reccomendation. She's a nut for oddball stories and this is her current favourite author... you can't really pin it down - kinda science fiction yet totally not. Very wierd and well-written.

Her books always connect the supernatural with horror in a believable way, always keeping the villain/monster in her novels human enough to make them recognisable and therefore scare the hell out of you. Brrr, only thinking about some of her novels make me shiver. If you haven't read anything by her, which I doubt, you should start with the first in The Vampire Chronicles series, Interview With The Vampire. One of her better stand-alone novels is Violin.
Another book I'd certainly recommend is Jane Jensen's Millenium Rising / Judgement Day. The apocalypse of the world like you've never seen it, scarily realistic, weaving realism with prophecies/legends, as has become Jensen's trademark. And I have yet to find a writer who can better her at that!
Slightly in a different genre, but still amazing (read: unmissable books) are Zelazny's novels. But that's fantasy I hear you say, well King has written that too! So, pick up the Amber anthology on your next visit to your bookstore and you'll be forever in my debt. Besides this guy has also written non-fantasy novels. His coolest is The Dream Master, an intelligent and sometimes horrifying look into the strength of the human mind, and I mean that 'look' literally.

H.P. Lovecraft. You might want to read his The Best Of H.P. Lovecraft to start if of any interest.

And while you're at it, add 'The Complete Short Stories & Poems of Edgar Allan Poe' to your shopping list.

Haven't read any King books for a long time so probably mentally decided it was PKD.
Think King went downhill a few years ago.

They were all good, but we enjoyed Angels & Demons and The Da Vince Code the best, probably because of the subject matter. A bit similar to Jonathan Rabb's "The Book of Q" in fact. Suppose it depends if you like that sort of thing, the closest to them that the others have mentioned here is Jane Jensen's Millenium Rising.

Funny that you mention Dan Brown, Narj, I just bought "The Da Vinci Code" this week. I've heard nothing but fantastic reviews.
