After a thread on upcoming films and movie soundtracks, I thought this one might be a good idea: what's the best dvd in your collection? And then not alone the movie of course, but also the transfer, audio track AND ESPECIALLY: the one dvd with the best dvd extras. Might also be interesting to see what extras dvds from different regions got.

My favourite?

Fight Club! (region 2, Benelux)

For starters, this is one of the most intelligent films ever made, beautifully shot, with topnotch acting and a amazing plot!

It also had a beautiful widescreen transfer and a bang on DD 5.1. English and French soundtracks.

The movie is also packed in a beautiful cardboard box and the sleeve design is simple, yet effective. The art used inside the box is also great, seemingly an advertisment (with a great line: Tyler Durden says: Use soap) and other great lines!

But of course the real beauty of this 2 disc package lies in the extras: videoclip, behind the scenes material, special effects analyses, hilarious cinema advertisements (remember the one with Brad Pitt? 'Please switch off your mobile phones so that everyone can enjoy the following film. Thank you. Did you know you can drink urine? It's sterile!'), and a bunch of other stuff

the best?:

a fantastic audio commentary:
e.g. (scene where Brad Pitt throws Edward Norton from the stairs near the end of the film):
Norton: Wow, that stuntman really took that fall seriously! He must've been really hurt.
Brad: yeah, and you know the best bit? David, how many takes did you do with this stuntman on the fall-from-the-stair-scene?
David: 19.
Brad: And which take did you use in the final film?
David: the second.

So what's your favourite dvd/dvd extra?

Just to let you know Fight Club was my first DVD....

My favorite would have to be......i don't know, let me think....
~rbeeler SVT  &&Name's STooGE$$$$ Valpurgius TNT; it's not PLURAL&&&&151.Generally speaking Sludge Doomsters are Angry, Gothic doomsters are sad, funeral doomsters are barely breathing, death doomsters are dirty, drunk and dribbling, Stoner Doomsters don't care, drone doomsters are out of it and traditional Doomsters are permanently pissed off, mainly with other doomsters

Great thread! The only problem is that i have soooo many favorite dvds...

ok i think that Road to Perdition is quite good. Fighe Club is equally good. Beautiful Mind is also good.

About the xtras you mention i think that Hollow man is really good. As a movie it isn't that good but the extras are just awesome...
Resistance is not futile, we're gonna win this thing, humankind is too good, we're not a bunch of under-achievers! We're gonna stand up, and we're gonna be human beings. We're going to get fired up about the real things, the things that matter! Creativity, and the dynamic human spirit that refuses to submit.

The best non-movie DVD
I own are the two existing Red Dwarf DVD:s, which are also packed full of extra material, including cast commentary of all episodes, which is very good for a TV series. The third season will be out this November...

Of course the 4 disc LOTR dvd version! How could I forget? :
Well, Fight Club still comes in second, closely followed by one of my other favourites: the dvd of Moulin Rouge: great making of, 'Red Curtain' feature (taking you out of the movie to show how certain scenes were filmed), the multiple angle dance sequences, commentary, music videos, a stunning DTS soundtrack, ... Oh, and a top film at that one too!

As for Red Dwarf: that's yet another tv show I want to add to my collection. Still saving up (or at least planning to) to buy the Buffy seasons on dvd (so far I only have the first season
)

Godfather, I saw Hollow Man on dvd (my brother is into that kind of films  :
) and while the film is rather crappy, the extras sure were a plenty! Was fascinating to see all those special effects (who were admittedly spectacular, but were also the only thing the film had going for it) analysed and explained!

Yep, the movie was crap and the ending rather bad. I would like to watch the guy 'win' at last
. The extras are AWESOME...

How can you restrain yourself!? Well, I guess there's always DivX's, but in my video shelf in a couple of years you'll see all three movies in original editions, special editions, and super duper box with all three movies... In the end I'll probably have financed half of the Helm's Deep scenes for them... :

Yeah, DivX is always a solution and that's what i pick, for now. I don't think that it is a good investement to buy all the extra editions of Lord of the Rings along with the mega-box.

Vanilla Sky. One of the best commentaries ever (if not THE best), beautiful menus with beautiful music by Nancy Wilson, and a couple of really good featurettes. The one about the press tour around the world was almost like a little movie in itself.

Hollow Man was indeed an interesting DVD, and the movie wasn't that bad, except for the ending, which went in the wrong direction.

Totally with you there! I told myself not to buy the extended edition, just the original, but when it came out last November it had risen to my most wanted dvd of the moment.
I'm sure the same will happen with parts two and three.  :
And yes, probably also with the extra extra edition containing all films.

And I think it's high time I replace my VHS version of The Usual Suspects with that special edition dvd!

I love this movie, even though I dont' have it on DVD (I even went so far as to consider the name "Fenster" for my new cat, but he's now officially named "Bubble Man" since no one gave me any other good options).

I'd have to say LOTR: Fellowship, special edition is the best in my collection.  I also favour Bram Stoker's Dracula and The 13th Warrior, but they were both released pre-DVD days, so there are no extras or cool additions.  I dont' have a big DVD collection...only about 20 or so, and only about 60 or so vhs movies.  Many of them are awful though because a friend, who's sister is a buyer for Blockbuster, sends me packages of movies as they become available.  I have such embarassing titles as "Sasquatch", "Mighty Peking Man", "Bongwater", "Spy Kids", "The Complete Monterrey Pop Music Festival", as well as several in the "Wishmaster" series.

Ahem, euhm, great 'collection of vhs you got there Z-Girl. :-/ Thank God he doesn't sent you those on dvd. Would be an insult to the medium!

Anyway, let's all list our second favourite dvd since I think we have established by now that the extended edition of LOTR is without an equal.

Another one of my favourites is the Nightmare Before Christmas Special Edition. This one also has great sound and visuals and fantastic extras: commentary, making of, storyboard comparisons, deleted scenes, posters, trailers. But the best extra is without doubt Burton's short films which I had never seen before. Yep, he obviously was one talented guy right from the start!

Deleted UserI have too many faves, it's too hard a question!
My TOP 3 -

1) Spirited Away (reg. 2 Japanese)-

Complete storyboard comparasion to the film. Doesn't sound like much, but Miyazaki is a total genius and the film was worth it anyhow. May buy the reg.1 which has an English track and more extras... beautiful soundtrack too...

2) LOTR 4-disc

For obvious reasons.

3) Snow White

Came with a great artbook and hundreds of extras, with all sorts of inspirational art to wonder at. Magical.

Other than that the runners up are X-Men 1.5, Ghostbusters, The Mummy and Monsters Inc.

Oh, and Happy Tree Friends.

It might still be released in theathres there, Godfather. Spirited Away is only in its second week (or something like that) on theatrical release here in Belgium too.
Haven't seen in yet, don't know if I will, cause I'll certainly buy the dvd release when it eventually comes out in Benelux region.

Sure, great idea!
I think I can dig up some truely horribly bad films too, you know, the ones that are soooo bad, they become hilarious!
