It depends on the game. If I'm not enjoying a game, I like to finish it up as quickly as possible.

You might put a basic hints section separate from the full walkthrough part. The full walkthrough might include doing things that aren't essential to finish the game, but which add to the story or are just interesting parts of the gameworld to visit.

If the game has Easter Eggs, an Easter Eggs section would be nice - so we know what to look out for before we start.

I prefer a classic walkthrough that lists the required actions in order. When I decide I'm stuck, I'll start reading the WT, making sure that I've done everything. When I find the first thing I missed, I stop reading.

I prefer a detailed WT to a brief one.
I forgot my sig.

I prefer UHS or any strict hints, never giving too much away, just a little for me to figure it out on my own. A walkthrough will be my next solution if I am really stuck and wish either finish the game or get the puzzle over with. The walkthrough has to describe and develop the story as I read.

I prefer a series of hints, going gradually from being very vague to the outright solution. I know this is a LOT of work for the writer of those hints but you asked what we preferred, so there you go.

I agree with Wimli (of the cute Hobbes face!).  I absolutely loved the hint system in Phantasmagoria.  You could click on the hint button once for a general hint, once more for more specifics, and finally a third for the detailed solution.  I wouldn't expect every game to have a hint button installed right into the game (although it is a cool option to have), but if it would be really nice to be able to download hints in this manner.  Perhaps a text file (or download, if there are non-text puzzles) that gives you 3 or 4 hints per puzzle, ranging from vague to the specified solution.

But dont' disregard the complete walkthroughs.  They're good for when you're not really into the game and you don't like it enough to put much brain power into finishing it on your own gumption.

I prefer something like UHS usually, however there have been times when even using that doesn't seem enough, for example if I've missed something early on and been able to keep going UHS doesn't necessarily solve the problem and then I need the walkthrough (and usually a previous saved game as well) to go back and fix what I missed.

I couldn't have said it better

I prefer a straight out walkthrough telling me what I need to do to advance, no beating around the bush.  I also prefer a bulleted format rather than a paragraph format.

It depends - if the game has multiple paths I usually prefer hints but in a regular linear game I like to have a detailed walkthrough that tells me exactly what I need to do next if I'm stuck - I only read what is necessary to continue and I never print it out.

I use wt's as a very last resort, but when I do, I prefer a detailed, bulleted format. If I'm stuck on one particular point, it's nice to be able to scan down--not have to read a paragraph on blow-by-blow actions. I also appreciate humor, but not every sentence as I've seen in some wt's. Too many people try to be "cute" in an attempt to keep it from being too dry, but end up just sounding silly. I also appreciate detailed drawings/screenshots of particularly tough puzzles. But if the photo is fuzzy or too small, it doesn't help. Provide a detailed solution instead.

Hi,
I like a walkthrough that gives me the "answer", so a straight, clear description works for me, with screenshots if it's necessary.  By the time I need to use a walkthrough, I really need to use it!

I also like it when the walkthrough tells me something else about the game, depending on the situation, mood, ambience, that sort of thing.  That's a bonus.   A sparse "this is what you do" style also works for me.

If I want a hint, I like to go to a forum where you can get hints.  When I pick up a walkthrough, I'm beyond the hint stage.

Thanks for asking us for input.
Regards, mszv

I like walkthroughs that offer both hints and a full walkthrough at the same time, if I had to choose one type of walkthough, I'd say the hint-based one.

I also like extras like plot analysis, easter eggs etc...

However, if there is one thing I hate seeing in walkthroughs, is when the writer describes the cut-scenes! I mean, why?! I really can't imagine the reason for doing such a thing, but I've seen it too many times.

I prefer hints.  I first look for UHS hints because I prefer my hints in layers from vague to more specific.

For a walkthrough, I prefer Crash's Q and A style.  My next preference is a full-blown walkthrough - but with this style it is hard to just find that little part that was missed without seeing spoilers.  I think full walkthroughs are easiest to make for strictly linear games.

Still adventuring after all these years!

Patiently awaiting The Last Crown: Haunting of Hallowed Isle, and Bracken Tor...

... and Asylum if it's not tooooo scary...

I like the 'Not Available' ones. Just like the old days, when walkthroughs were rare and people actually solved the games themselves.  :'( I've been playing some freeware Amiga adventures lately and I loved the old feeling; no walkthrough available so the game was either going to be finished by me.. or it was going to remain unfinished.
