Dungeon Siege had been on my shelf for a while as a backup game, in case I happened to run out of other things to play (I'd gotten it for only $10). I wasn't really looking forward to playing it, but the time did come that I had nothing else to play, so I gave it a shot. And I LOVED it!

The game Dungeon Siege gets compared to the most is Diablo- and while I understand the comparison, I tried Diablo II once about a year ago, and it did nothing for me. The 3D graphics in Dungeon Siege pretty much blow Diablo away, and I really prefer DS's combat method too.

I quickly became aware of an addictive cycle while playing the game. Stage one is killing all enemies in the current area. "I'll quit when the last giant spider in this temple is dead!" Stage two is equipping your party once everyone's inventory is full. "I'll quit once I upgrade everyone's weapons, armor, and spells and shed some of this extra luggage." Stage three is testing out your new equipment. "Gee I wonder what all this stuff does. I'd better go find some enemies to try it out." Repeat.

While the awesome scenery and Lord of the Rings-scale battles were really great, I've got to admit my favorite part of Dungeon Siege was my pack mule! Although his name in the game was Flare, I gave him the new name of Packers!

Packers generally tried to stay out of trouble, but sometimes baddies would creep up and start wailing on him. He'd just turn around and start kicking 'em with his hind legs. I saw him vanquish a foe or two, but I usually sent my party to help him whenever he was under attack.

I was very impressed by the game's polish- every interface element I could imagine was there. Tooltips appeared when you'd expect them with the information you'd want to see, plenty of super-handy keyboard shortcuts for inventory and party management. You could tell it was designed by people who actually played this kind of game and had enough time to do it right.

This is only the 3rd RPG I've played, after Anachronox and Arx Fatalis. If other RPGs like Planescape and Morrowind are as good as this I'm really gonna be sorry I didn't get into them sooner.

This is weird.  I am on my way to the ice caves in DS.

I bought it when it first came out and because I really didn't like Diablo (never finished) or Diablo II (never finished), I decided it would be a game to play when there was nothing else and shoved it in a drawer. Well the day came recently when I didn't have any game that was holding my attention so installed it.

Now,  I really hate overhead views and very tiny characters and that is one reason I never finished Icewind Dale or the Diablos, I got so bored, you don't feel like you are involved in the game.  But the characters are bigger in DS and having a good time. They are the same size as say Soul Bringer and I love that game.  Have five characters and the mule and they are all doing great so haven't added anymore to the party. Would like it if I could have the screen look upward a bit more so could see more of what is in front of me (I am a first person fan).

The game runs beautifully and the music is great, graphics are great.

My only complaint is the character icons down the left side of the screen.  I keep them with inventory close but it still blocks a chunk of the screen and that annoys me.  Read the manual and couldn't fine anything saying how to make them more narrow than what I have now.

Bloodmoon, the next addon to Morrowind is coming out soon and I am waiting impatiently for it.

That's exactly what I didn't like about Diablo. In DS you can just zoom in with the mousewheel to see the action up close.

I strongly recommend having a full party. There are 2 or 3 bosses in the game who'll be very tough to beat with only five warriors. Probably not impossible though. I ended up with 3 melee fighters, 2 archers, 1 combat mage and 1 nature mage. During really heavy battles I had the nature mage just sit back and heal people. He would heal the mule too, so that was nice.

The game runs beautifully and the music is great, graphics are great.

I agree. I have version 1.0 of the game installed, and I only learned there was a patch to it the day after I had completed the game. The only problem I noticed is apparently fixed by the patch- sometimes during battles the sound would cut out sporadically. (Sometimes music, sometimes battle sounds.)

The music was really good.

My only complaint is the character icons down the left side of the screen.

Yeah, the portraits did get in the way. I would like to have been able to hide or shrink them.

I'm actually going to try to get Morrowind and Tribunal tonight!

Ehh, I'm not a huge fan of games which pretty much depend on your ability to click fast, but Dungeon Siege does require more skills than Diablo 1 and 2.
ungeon Siege wasn't a bad game, it just seemed kind of bland to me.  Nothing really stood out, but I never really gave it a chance just like I never gave Arcanum a chance and I just tried that game again and found out that I like it a lot so maybe Dungeon Siege is a pretty good game.

I played lots and lots of Diablo and quite a bit D2, but I never got anything out of Dungeon Siege. From my point of view it's just a highly polished Diablo clone, nothing else. The controls are not the best, either. You lose the overview quite soon. Maybe I didn't try hard enough to give the game a chance. The demo was plain boring. The graphics are quite ok, but far from being great.

Actually, the D2 graphics can be even more aesthetic, but they are limited to the low resolution.
Perhaps patch 1.10 for Diablo 2 (kind of a free add-on judging the time it takes, hehe) will make some nice changes and I'll start once again.

I'm looking forward to the 1.10 patch too.
