Guess what, my feeling was right again: although I loved to have the Manhunter DVD I waited for a special edition I knew would come! Unfortunately I'll have to buy an import version as the distributor for the Benelux has never even heard of the word 'special edition. Problem is they have the rights to a lot of good films, amongst othters all of Miramax's films. So that means my region has vanilla disc releases (as in absolutely no extras, only trailers for their other releases) for The Others, Pulp Fiction, From Dusk Till Dawn, Jackie Brown and The Shipping News, just to name a few. > > > I try to keep a close eye on R1 and R2 differences and keep my ear to the ground about SE versions - most films get the treatment. Blade Runner 3 disc is imminent! Whoooo-hoooo! Another example - Shawshank - rubbish budget DVD currently out - bound to be a proper release eventually. I can wait, i have the video if i want to watch it before then. I only have two region two players (a regular one and a DVD-rom), so I have to limit my choices, but it's amazing how much the various releases in various parts of the same region differ! Did you know for example that Sleepy Hollow was released as a double disc release in Germany, including a DTS soundtrack (although only for German, i think) with a bunch of extra extras?! > But I must say that we sometimes get lucky too: We got a double disc release of Almost Famous (an unbelievably fantastic film!!! ) that featured both the Theatrical release and the director's cut (which was even better) and all the extra's (or most of them) of the two separate U.K. releases. Oh well, I guess this list of different releases could go on forever, so I'll just stop here. I currently own over 750 videos and about 70 DVDs - I'm gradually replacing as my favourite films get special digital treatment! I was lucky enough that when I began to get serious about collecting, dvd was just breaking through, so I never owned more than 50 vhs. I've got about 20 vhs left that are either not worth to be upgraded to dvd (read: a lousy transfer and/or no extras releases) or that are STILL not available on dvd (e.g.: Albino Alligator, or not yet available in the Benelux: True Romance). Wow, seems that I just kept rambling on again heh? : |

| Deleted User | I don't collect huge amounts of films, I just get the ones that are either important to me or I have an artists interest in... The only two DVD I regret buying is a HK hijack of LOTR, which was fine until it was released on the 4 disc special edition but I have no use for now. I've got videos, but not tons, and I mainly get older films like Ferris Bueller or Fistful of Dollars on VHS as I don't want to spend a fortune on them. Being a special features and (rapidly becoming) an '80's junkie my collection is a little skewed. Please forgive the list, just want to add to the conversation! Amelie LOTR 4 Disc American Beauty Tron La Gabianella E Il Gatto (beautiful kids film (Argentians should know the original book)) Ghostbusters Gladiator Final Fantasy Metropolis (osamu Tezuka) Crouching Tiger Star Wars; Phantom Menace (don't like the film, just the design) Monsters Inc Spirited Away Mothman Prophecies Open Your Eyes The Mummy (fun!) Akira Matrix Dark City Alien Aliens X-Men 1.5 Snow White Lilo and Stitch Princess Mononoke Blood The Last Vampire Jin Roh My Neighbour Totoro Amores Perros Porco Rosso Aida (terrible Italian cartoon I started my career with) Happy Tree Friends The Thing Nightmare Before Christmas My girlfriends has others including Ice Age and Bladerunner, plus she's an Audrey Hepburn completist. Short collection, eh? ANIMATRIX on Monday! YAY! Can you list your comp in one post? |

For my collection, just check my signature. DVD Profiler really is a handy program and it's absolutely free. And it saves the time to type all the titles of my dvds in this post. I know that I lack a lot of the releases of the last few months but that's because I can wait till their prices are reduced or until a special edition comes along. . My videos: Albino Alligator (awaiting dvd releases) The Basketball Diaries (no Benelux dvd release) Belle & Het Beest II: Een Ongelooflijk Kerstfeest (buying the dvd would be a waste of time, the video I got for free) Brotherhood of Justice (no dvd release) Chasing Amy (bad dvd release) City Of Industry (not a good enough movie to buy the dvd) Crash (no benelux dvd release) Daria 1: "Esteemsters", "The Invitation", "College Board"no dvd release) Great Expectations (no dvd release) Head Above Water (no dvd release) Ice (not good enough to buy dvd) Jackie Brown (saving to buy the import dvd version; lousy benelux dvd version) Killer (not good enough to buy dvd) Last Man Standing (not good enough to buy dvd) Léon (awaiting a special edition) Nell (awaiting dvd release) Payback (not worth to buy dvd) Primary Colors (was a gift, have still not seen it, so don't know whether I'll get the dvd) Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (no benelux dvd) Romeo Is Bleeding (boring film) S.F.W. (no dvd release) She's So Lovely (dumb film) Sneakers (didn't really like it) Star Trek : First Contact (awaiting special edition) Star Trek : Voyager 4.7 (Waiting for dvd) The Thing Called Love (bad film) To Die For (not the Nicole Kidman film) (no dvd) Too Young To Die? (no dvd) Totally F***cked Up (no dvd) True Romance (no dvd, but coming next month) The Truman Show (lousy dvd release) Turks Fruit (no dvd) Wild At Heart (lousy dvd release) And then I also have about 20 vhs that I'll try to sell when I go to a flee market next month because I already replaced with the dvd version or planning to do so with the money I make there. Edit: just rereading I noticed what a pile of crap is in my vhs collection. Boy, did I buy a bunch of crap or what? : |

WimliGuild Master![]() ![]() Posts : 3259 Joined: 14 MAR 2003 Status : Offline | To get us back on topic (well more towards it again): I must say, Monkeybone, that your collection contains many must-haves! Amelie for one, that movie just seems to have changed the way I look at life. It's such a magical movie experience with an important message about life too! Wonderful film! And I also see Amores Perros there, and Abre Los Ojos (that's the Open Your Eyes that you mention right?) You should also check out Tesis, the debut film of the director of Abre Los Ojos, a film that is quiet spooky! Amores Perros is a stunner too! Especially the guy in the first part of the film who later also played in Y Tu Mama Tambien (another great film by the way!). LOTR 4 Disc is on your list too, as are Nightmare Before Christmas (I hope you got the special edition, it includes two of Burton's short films and they are just brilliant!), Monsters Inc., and some other great films. Oh, and if there's one Disney film you should still get, it's The Emperor's New Groove. That movie is just brilliant, hilarious, original and quite un-Disney like in style. And Godfather, I see you have Cube and L.A. Confidential in your collection! Great choices, especially Cube. That's probably the most claustrophobic film I've ever seen and it's really scary with an amazing ending! Edit: and why do I alsways notice typing errors AFTER I posted? : (hence the many edits in most of my posts) |

StammerGuild Master![]() ![]() Posts : 3894 Joined: 5 JAN 2003 Status : Online | Thanks Wimli. Actually my list is way too larger but i didn't want to bother you. To add some sequels to the topic. Bad Boys 2 is a movie that is going to be released around July. I can't say that i wait for it..i am not a fan of the first one. Another one is Spy kids 3 which comes around July too but i don't wait this one either. Anyone mentioned Tomb Raider2? I can't say that i wait for it. I didn't like the first one. I didn't like the hacker that Lara has in her house but the worst thing of all is the bloody butler! Why they got a young butler? This is just silly! In the story, of the game, the butler is old and a friend of Lara's father. This can't be real. Also the first one was too action (y) for me and i didn't like it. It didn't have the classic Tomb Raider atmosphere where you were lost and you solved riddles etcetera etcetera. Also there is Exorcist: The beginning. Finally i think we didn't mention Jurassic Park IV! I can't say that i am waiting for this one. The director is different and if i judge from the third movie this one is going to be really crappy. I don't say that i didn't like the first one and the second one, i may add but the third wasn't good. I don't know if they are going to keep the same cast but i hope so. That's about it! I don't think that there is anything else i forgot... Resistance is not futile, we're gonna win this thing, humankind is too good, we're not a bunch of under-achievers! WimliGuild Master![]() ![]() Posts : 3259 Joined: 14 MAR 2003 Status : Offline | Hey Godfather, I'm NEVER annoyed with movie lists , I love movie lists! But maybe it would bother some of the others here, so let's just try to stay a bit on topic here. I'm not really looking forward either to any of the movies you mentioned in your last post. The original Bad Boys was a nice film, one that you see once and entertains you, but not one that you'd watch again and again. So no, Bad Boys 2 is not exactly a hot prospect in my book. I've never seen the first two Spy Kids, and frankly I couldn't care about them or a third one, although they are directed by a very talented director, Robert Rodriguez. Man, From Dusk Till Dawn is just awesome!!! I mentioned Tomb Raider 2 in my very first post in this thread but apparently noone's interested in it (neither am I by the way). The first one wasn't bad, but not a movie to watch again, let alone make a sequel of. : Besides, the sequel will be directed by Jan De Bont who has failed to make a decent film after Speed. Not too promising! Oh, and don't get me started on the Jurassic Park films! I've seen the first one and I thought it was hilariously badly made. Fake special effects, aweful acting performances, no sense to build any tension, a non-existing script, .... This was the movie where Spielberg lost all credibility in my eyes. And he has yet to make a decent film since that fiasco. Have you already watched Monsters Inc.? You don't know what you're missing! And if you can, also check out the Mike's New Car short film. I nearly died of laughter when I saw that one! Oooh and For the Birds is another fantastic short film from the same makers. Funny as hell too! |

Also, the threat of the aliens is much more intimidating when the humans have no weapons to fight against them with. Even though it might not have been too good, I think Alien 3 was a refreshing movie in that it didn't turn into the action/sfx direction set out by Aliens. I want to watch an Alien movie to get genuinely scared, not just to be impressed by cool effects. I thought Four was totally pointless and played like a shoddy comic book it was so lamely plotted and scripted. It has been said many times that Europeans generally like Alien: Resurrection more than Americans. In your specific case this doesn't apply, but maybe there's some truth in this anyway... |

StammerGuild Master![]() ![]() Posts : 3894 Joined: 5 JAN 2003 Status : Online | Tomb Raider is a very good game but the movie sucked! I don't think that it was just not good. They completely destroyed my hopes to enjoy one of my favorite games in the big screen. As much as i hope for a decent sequel i don't think that it is going to happen. Jurassic Park 1 wasn't bad at all! I really enjoyed it and it had a really good soundtrack. You have to admit that it was quite original as an idea. I can't say that the acting is the most powerful aspect of the movie but it wasn't THAT bad. And, i don't think that the movie was made for a thriller! It was just an action movie with quite a good plot. I hope that the sequel will be good but i am SURE that it is going to be a heavy action movie with mutant dinosaurs... I haven't seen Monsters Inc, yet. However, i saw yesterday Total Recall for a second time and The Game, which is awesome for a third time... Petter, i agree with you. I don't like, that much, pointless shooting like Alien 2. I am not saying that it isn't good i am just saying that i prefer weak opponents against the Aliens. Thank you for your remark Wimli. I have MANY movies and i don't know where to put them. I have two walls of my room FULL of CDs...the other two have posters of Matrix and Lord of the Rings... I read Total Film every month and they have a list of the twenty most succesful films in the U.S. and the U.K. and the differences are sometimes really interesting. A good example are the movies of the Coen brothers: they mostly are modest successes in the U.S. but are big hits in the U.K. (and the rest of Europe). It is also strange to note that in Flanders (the Dutch speaking part of Belgium) the European film Amelie was more succesful than most of the Big Hollywood blockbusters. In fact, Amelie stayed in theatres for over a year! Sleepy Hollow is another example: it brought in more money in European countries than in America, something rare for American blockbusters. And certainly strange for this one as it is based on an American short story that is virtually unknown in Europe but, from what I've heard, still very popular in the U.S.. A final example: Moulin Rouge. The movie only managed to gather 58 million dollars at the American box office (shame on you America! ) while it ended up in the top five of highest grossing films of 2001 here in Belgium. |

Anyway, I think the intention of the makers really was to scare you in some of the scenes, but it just didn't work for me. And once the illusion of the film is gone, you begin to notice all the little problems the film has. Total Recall was a very good film, I really should watch it again sometime. Rumor has it that there's a Special Edition dvd coming out for it! So let's keep our fingers crossed it will deliver with a lot of extras! And The Game, that really was a perfect nail-biting thriller. I loved the paranoia that got bigger and bigger as the movie progressed: is it a game, is it real? Absolutely fantastic! But what else could you expect from the maestro himself? Mr. Fincher, we love you!!! |

I and the lovestory in Ep. II but who cares, the saga continues... (and for the record, I love R2D2!!). Now JP I, II and III are great. Like you said, GF, supersoundtrack (I got the one with the logo all over the CD, great stuff). Super visual effects. Especially the last one (hooray for the birds and the spinosaurus!. Bring on JP IV! Alien Resurrection, even for me, was a little bit too much. Don't need anything more where that came from. But I loved Burton's Planet of the Apes. Now where is that sequel? |

| Deleted User | Ressurection was strangely on telly last night - to be honest, it wasn't as bad as I remember and raised one or two smiles. The design of the Aliens (as Giger rightly said, they looks like sh*t) is terrible and the CG is bad but it's got more imagination than a lot of recent movies, plus dazzling Jeunet camerawork. Wimli - will check out Tesis if I can find it. Still need to see Y Tu Mama Tambien... The Emperor's New Groove Have it - rather, my girlfriend does, and we love it. Disney's most recent classics are The Lion King (DVD out soon), the above and Lilo and Stitch. I don't count Pixar as Disney... The only JP for me was the first. The other two don't add up and are just more of the same... the third has it's moments, in particular in the aviary and has one of the most godawful abrupt endings ever. One last thing - The Game was fantastic. Panic Room was... well, bland... Finchers next? I can't remember! Remind me... |

The Benelux version of Tesis (http://www.dvdsales.be/index.php3?partner=74is a lot cheaper, but misses a few extras that the U.K. dvd has. And Y Tu Mama Tambien is a strange film experience, but certainly worth checking out. I don't consider Pixar Disney either. Rumor even has it that Pixar is thinking about terminating the cooperation with Disney after there contract is finished (They are still legally obliged to make two movies for Disney). Seems they are tired of Disney's whining to make more (and also cheaper) sequels to Pixar's movies. Disney already made an abyssmal Buzz Lightyear cartoon series which did not fare well with Pixar. Pixar wants to continue bringing high quality and original movies. Judging by Finding Nemo's trailers they've succeeded again! Inie: Especially because we would really, really like it ! And if two ppl isn't enough, I'm sure my boyfriend and my brother would watch it too!! Four people! That's it, I'm starting a petition! Planet of the Apes 2 will happen, thanks to us. |

JonasKyratzesSorcerer Apprentice![]() ![]() Posts : 280 Joined: 10 OCT 2002 Status : Online | Jeunet is overrated. If you want a really scary movie, watch The Mothman Prophecies. Saw it when it first came out, scared the living crap out of me. Another great movie that I really have to mention is Dark City. Just... wow. Incredibly intelligent and deep movie, great atmosphere, fantastic acting by Keifer Sutherland... Oh, and Vanilla Sky. I know everybody hated it, but I thought it was one of the deepest, most interesting, and most touching films ever made. And a pleasure to watch, and hear. Cameron Crowe is a genius, and his films are all very deeply human, they somehow say something about the human condition in a way that few other films can. And the Vanilla Sky DVD is one of my favorites. The commentary is a lot of fun and very interesting, and the other extras are also fantastic, especially the one about the press tour, it was almost a little movie of its own. Just watch the movie without any expectations at all, let it entrance you, let it show what it wants to show you, and then buy the DVD. [i] |

His best movies IMHO are 'Vanilla Sky', 'Almost Famous' and 'Say Anything'. If you haven't seen them, do so now! Another favorite is 'Grosse Pointe Blank', a movie starring John Cusack as a hitman going to his highschool reunion. Extremely funny, clever, and rewatchable. And while we're talking about hitmen, there's a brilliant, and strange, movie called Panic, starring William Macy. It's not funny at all, but it's beautiful. And Donnie Darko. Don't forget Donnie Darko. [i] |

The Game is most certainly really good thriller and the magic thing is that you are confused but everything are being cleared in the ending. Inie, i have the soundtrack too but i don't have that CD. You should know that i collect soundtracks too. Panic Room is Fincher's. He did a great work but the plot was just weak and the acting didn't touch me at all. Also it had this disgusting cliche which means that one of the criminals always has to be the good guy who is being used by the other one. I am going to sound stupid, but i don't care anymore. What is Pixar? Don't shoot, maybe i know it but i don't know the Greek title! Do you have any information that can help my memory? Jonas, i saw The Mothman Prophecies in a summer theatre and i liked it. I believe that the movie had that cool atmosphere because it was all about real stories and because the sound effects were just GREAT! Ok, i didn't like Vanilla Sky and i think that Cruise isn't good at it! The only moment i liked it was in the scene with the tech support! Great moment! Other than that, it was just a little confusing movie but it can't be compared with the absolutely great Game. Now that we are talking about Hitmen, i must mention that the movie Hitman is under 'construction'. I mean the Codename 47! I just love this game, both of them, and they are most certainly in my top 10 of all-time and all-genre games. The atmosphere, the music, the different ways to assassin! Everything is just grea... Donie Darko is a very good movie. Resistance is not futile, we're gonna win this thing, humankind is too good, we're not a bunch of under-achievers! We're gonna stand up, and we're gonna be human beings. We're going to get fired up about the real things, the things that matter! Creativity, and the dynamic human spirit that refuses to submit. |
