Whoah! Are you sure you know what you're asking? Have you read the Myst-thread in the Hot Topics-section? If you wait until you've heard everybody's opinions about Myst you may not make it to the shop in time...Good luck!

Lovely graphics (especially in Riven and Exile). Incredibly atmospheric. Challenging and well-designed puzzles. Hauntingly beautiful music.
Then again, there are lots of reasons why you might not like it. Although there is a plot running through the games, it's a bit unclear and is only revealed gradually through diaries, visual clues etc. Another thing seriously lacking is dialogue and character interaction; you'll only meet a few people during the games and you can't talk to them. If these things are important to you, it might be best to avoid the Myst games.
Finally, the puzzles are mechanical or logic-based rather than inventory-based. They require you to be reasonably good at maths and lateral thinking. They're also quite difficult, particularly in Riven - I challenge anyone to finish that game without a walkthrough!

What's concerning you're question Psybafire, I agree with Eva. I think it's best you see the thread in hot spot about Myst.

Resistance is not futile, we're gonna win this thing, humankind is too good, we're not a bunch of under-achievers! We're gonna stand up, and we're gonna be human beings. We're going to get fired up about the real things, the things that matter! Creativity, and the dynamic human spirit that refuses to submit.

I found Riven to be the most difficult game I ever played, far more so than Myst. That puzzle with the marbles... ugh *shudders at the memory*

I think you'd be seriously missing out if you're into that kind of adventure game and you haven't played them, personally. For that price you can hardly go wrong can you - even if you don't like them that much it's only a round in the pub. With all three you won't be going down the pub for about a month anyway . Myst was my first and remains in a prominent position.

Myst was the first PC graphical adventure I ever played, and the game that really got me into adventuring. I didn't know anything about adventuring at the time. I had no idea I was supposed to pine for character interaction or long for more of a plot. I was having fun just enjoying the fantastic graphics and puzzling over strange machines. Three games for roughly 20 dollars? For that price you can afford to buy it and hate it -- but I don't think you will.

Totally agree with what Andromus just said! Myst was my intro to adventure. It has a plot!  I thought we played as Catherine coming to rescue Altrus - it's been so long.....)
I still PREFER games without endless dialog (even though I am loving Discworld Noir at the moment).
Still adventuring after all these years!
Patiently awaiting The Last Crown: Haunting of Hallowed Isle, and Bracken Tor...
... and Asylum if it's not tooooo scary...

I'm not really much of a expert of Myst. I've been playing adventrues for a long time. I've watched a few playing playing bits of Myst. I always found it to be a pretty stunning world, great to see cd-rom technology being used. But for me it was so empty and quiet. The puzzles also seemed pretty complicated, lots of running around. But I'm sure if I ever picked up the game and gave it a chance I'd probably get into it, just would have to be in the frame of mind. Although is 3D and for me that's a whole other story. But it's a good deal, so probably worth having, you get a whole whack of games.

but that's me. I finished myst and I'm trying to play Riven, but the lack of story, characters, and something to keep my drive of solving really hard puzzles, is definetely not there.

Not for me. I always envision the character in first person games to be an 18 year old boy. Don't ask me why this happens. It's weird. Even in the Nancy Drew games I imagine the character to be a boy. Then Nancy opens his mouth and this woman's voice comes out. It's disturbing.

Exactly, and that's an aspect I really like in Myst. Some of the characters you're asked to play in 3rd person adventure are sometimes irritating and/or too cliché and it prevents you from being really immersed into the game. At least you don't have this problem with 1st person, and you don't have to hear 100 times "I can't do that" or 'it's silly" everytime you try something wrong. :
I really like 3rd person adventure though...
Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it.

| Deleted User | psybafire: The Myst Trilogy box is a bargain! I bought it a couple of months ago and it's definately worth the money!
I must honestly say that I don't like 1st person adventure games much. But I do love the Myst games. I Played Myst when it was pretty new and I'll never forget that experience. Riven I recently finished, and it was great as well, with really beautiful graphics. Myst 3 is still on my to-do list, together with 10 or so other adventure games that I should have played already.
Still, regardless of how you like the games, the Myst Trilogy is a very nice collection of the three games, so you shouldn't be disappointed.

Myst 3 is one big visual treat. If you're into puzzles, you'll solve it within a day or two but it looks spectacular and has a great dreamworld-mood.
But Riven, ahh... that one really jumps out. Not only out of the trilogy, out of game history. If you manage to get sucked in the game from the beginning (And quite some forummembers have) you'll realize within moments that you bought an ultimate months-lasting adventuregaming orgasm... It's an atmosphere you'll have to taste, and like. Of course, this is useless information since there are numerous I Love Riven posts, but I just feel like mentioning it again...
