Status : Offline | Since most of the issues I readed in this forum are about making old games run under newer systems, here are a couple of tricks to do:
If you want to run an older Windows game under XP, the first thing to try is to enable the Windows 95/98 compatibility. This is done by right clicking the file name, selecting Properties and then the Compatibility tag. Also, note the lower resolutions and 256 color options. This is great for Win 3.1 games. If first doesn't works, before trying the second option, you could search for a patch.
The second option is to try Virtual PC application by Connectix (www.connectix.com). This works just as if you had a second PC running in your desktop. On a technical note, it emulates a S3 Trio 64 graphic card and a Sound Blaster 16. Its shipped with a PC DOS version so you can start to use it right out of the box. After you "turn on" your new PC, you can do a Win 95 install by capturing your cd drive. This procedure is wonderfuly descripted in the manual. This works a 99% with old Windows games. I know you're asking yourself "and what about the speed?" but I assure you'll be surprised on how well it manages it.
Now if you're urging for a DOS game, then the things get tricky. The first one to try is excellent application VDMSound (ntvdm.cjb.net). This emulates an SB PRO under NT/2K/XP and works quite well in most of the cases. In the site theres also a nice front-end to run it easily. Be warned that the VESA compatibility is not that good and its very slow. The second option is the same: go for Virtual PC. You should know how to set up a CONFIG.SYS and an AUTOEXEC.BAT files, how to disable EMS memory for some games, etc. I'll post here the configuration I use that worked with most games. Another option would be DOSBox (dosbox.cjb.net) but, as its in early stages, I would not advice to use it yet. Hope that was useful!

I tried your XP tip last night on a new game I am reviewing. The game was running fine until I got to one location, then it would go into slo-mo. I did as you suggested by right-clicking and resetting the properties and voila! the problem was solved. Thanks!

Stooge, the only problem I found with VMWare is that its very slow for running games but its far a more professional tool than VPC.

Status : Online | Yea, I noticed that. When I first got Feeble Files, I wasn't dual booting such that I tried VMware. In the VM, the sound would not be synched and it sucked. Then I dualbooted. But Connectix is good for games? I saw it a while ago but never tried it...

It would be helpful if a thread like this could be sticked permanently as to appear on the top everytime, because most issues are related to the topics discussed in here.
Ah sorry, it doesn't work because you forgot the www.
